Re: Project Winter Beater
Got the trans in, but eventually figured out when I couldn't get the slave on that I have the fwd motor mount bolted to the block. No wonder it was so damn hard to get the trans mount on....
Anyways, I snapped a couple pics: http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/SDC11315.JPG http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/SDC11314.JPG |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Started taking the wire wheel to my passenger side rocker and it's not looking good:
http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11342.JPG To be honest, all the metal along the rocker is weak and needs to be replaced in my opinion. I have not tried the driver's side with the wire wheel yet, but on the passenger's side I could cut right through the metal with the wire wheel end on a drill. Not a happy person but what are ya going to do? |
Re: Project Winter Beater
That really sucks. One of the main reasons I've stuck with FWD for so long. My shell is mint.

I'm saddened by it, but whatever. I'll still patch it, even if it doesn't look 100%. If it seals and it's strong, that's all I care about because I'm going with a 94 side and rear end conversion so those side skirts will cover the whole lower side. Not to mention I get a better looking ass....:D |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Drove the car back to my apartment! Feels really good to drive it again. Need to bleed the brakes some more, but for the most part it was really solid. Fired up first try.
Twack took a video or 2 I think when he followed me home. Open downpipe ftw! |

Re: Project Winter Beater
Took it into school today to swap in the 4 bolt rear.
http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11345.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11346.JPG Need to replace the heater hoses as they piss coolant pretty good when it heats up. Need to set base ignition timing as well, route a vacuum line for the wastegate, blah blah. It's all mostly little things. |

The good thing is they both run... :drive1:
I cleaned out my garage for the first time since tearing into the Laser. Snapped a pic of the Talon from off my deck: http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11347.JPG |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Drove it to school today to fab up the rear section of my exhaust. Just need to get a muffler for it and some hangers welded on. Also put it up on a lift and started replacing the inner tie-rods because the stock ones have the jam nuts seized. Also found a driver's side axle with good threads so I can put a nut on it. (thanks Zach)
Felt boost with it for the first time today after getting the CAS adjusted. I need to finish the exhaust though because the knock sensor is picking up the exhaust from the open downpipe....hahahaha |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Cars looking good!
You sure about the knock from just the open down pipe? I've ran open down pipe on my car since I've got it running and it doesn't knock. Maybe yours hits the oil pan or something or it really is knocking? |
Re: Project Winter Beater

It might be really getting knock, I'll have to check it out when I get my logger back from Zach. I feel it was phantom knock because it cleared up quick and pulled good in 1st. It's nothing that worries me at the moment until I actually hook the logger up. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Did the first prototype of my exhaust today and it fits, but needs some tweaks. Never mind the shitty welds too, I had large gaps to fill and it was my first time welding in over 4 years...so go ahead and laugh it up.
http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11352.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11353.JPG I was also able to install my inner tie rods, but I need to align it next week because I didn't have enough time at school today. I do have a current interior pic, however: http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11354.JPG |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Snapped a few more pics today:
http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11387.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11386.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11385.JPG I wanted to get it on the alignment rack at school but some kid was lost and had his Buick on all day. So instead I went about setting idle and boosting around at wastegate for a little bit. I need to revisit my ignition timing as it hesitates durring spool but opens up when it hits. I think it might be a little bit too far advanced. I also need to do a boost leak test on it. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
My friend brought down the 94 rear bumper and tail lights today. So tonight after work I put them on. I'm hoping with a good wash and then a buffing and wax my car will match the bumper better.
http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11392.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11391.JPG No TSi here... |
Re: Project Winter Beater
I still need to get the rear tail light harness from my friend so I can have working tail lights and what not but I'm happy with it:
http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11439.JPG One from the front for shits: http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11440.JPG Still have to fix the exhaust but I'm kind of holding off on that for a little bit. Might have a name brand exhaust lined up... |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Got a flat on the left rear tire so I swapped my stock Stratus wheels over. I actually am liking these a lot better than the 2g swirls:
http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/627/SDC11443.JPG Funds have been lacking so there haven't been a lot of updates at all. Now that school is out for the summer I'll be working full time so hopefully once I get caught up with bills there will be more progress. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Time for a weekly pic update...
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/SDC11538.JPG http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/SDC11539.JPG Took it bombing around on some of the gravel roads here. I've learned that I have a lot to learn about how to control an AWD car on gravel. It sure is a ton of fun though... |

Re: Project Winter Beater
The car has developed what feels like fuel cut at about 4k. Drives around perfect until I start going more than 50% throttle and the boost goes above 12 psi.
I've checked: -Plugs -Mafs -fuel system for leaks -Boost leaks (none) On my datalogger the only thing that looks fishy to me is the injector duty cycles go from 20-30% all the way to 80 something percent right before it cuts out. As of right now, I want to say the pump might be taking a crap? It's an evo 9 unit that I replaced in the winter time a couple weeks before swapping motors. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
So I think I've found the problem. I took the cop setup off a few days back to inspect things and ever since it's been on like 3 cylinders. Well I took the cop back off today to check the plugs, put it back on and it ran fine till i touched the gas again. Then it was missing. I took the cop off and sure enough, one of the wires were pulled out of the stock plug on the cop side of things.
I crimped it so it's hardwired for now to get me to work. When I get to work, I'll solder it up until I find a stock plug again. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Well it drove fine on the way to work but still cut out under load. Pulled it inside the shop right away and soldered the 3 wires up. Pulled it out of the garage and it was back to missing again. On my lunch break I took it home and would only run right if it was between 2500 and 4k. Anywhere else in the rpm range and it would be on 3 cylinders.
I know for sure the number one cylinder isn't firing for whatever reason because I can cut the number one injector on my datalogger and it doesn't change the 3 cylinder running. I'm waiting for some motivation to hit me today and get my ass outside to mess with it some more. I have a stock coil pack and wires I picked up from Twack, just waiting for said motivation... |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Yeah I didn't like my COP when I had it on my car. It looks sexy, but performs poorly. I'm sure the stock ignition setup will fix all your issues.

Re: Project Winter Beater
Having the stock coil pack and good wires on it (Thanks Twack) got it back to driving status but not full on boosting yet. Still fuel cuts after I changed out the sock on the pump with a brand new one in hopes I don't have to change the pump. Also checked the mafs and it seems to be in good working order. I read with those if you tap them with a screw driver at idle they shouldn't change readings at all, but a bad one will. Having the screen off the 3 in. gm maf wouldn't be causing this, right?
It's acting like it's running out of fuel before the injectors though. IDC's shoot way up from 65% way up to 115% on one of my pulls right before fuel cut. That's how my Laser acted before I put the evo9 pump in. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
So I've now replaced all 4 injector plugs with newer ones off a 420a and still no difference. What I don't understand is I'm getting 11.7 v on both wires that go to the injectors. Shouldn't I get 12 + on one wire and the other is a ground that the ecu operates?
I'm going to swap my evo 9 pump back in and also re-wire it and see if that helps. I'm seriously out of ideas. I really want to run it this weekend at the autocross. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
So after another week of thinking and tinkering on it... I think I've fixed it. It still leans out up top but that's because I have the stock pump in there still. But it pulls like it should for 12 psi. What fixed it was a new fuel filter and putting some injector cleaner in with about 3/8 tank. When I took the filter off straight dirt was coming out. Pretty nasty actually. I should've paid more attention when twack said the tank is pretty dirty...
Before, I'd have to set the translator box to around 480's to even drive the car anywhere. After driving it around with the cleaner in the tank, I started noticing it running smoother. So I messed with the base adjustment knob on the maf-t and it's been running fine set to 560's again. I went on a 20 min cruise last night on some dirt back roads and can say it seems to be back up to where it should be. I could tell the difference through the day. I tried doing some 2nd gear donuts in a parking lot and it just bogged, no power. I tried it later in the day and it was not a problem, just ripped the lot up in 2nd. hahaha I plan to swap the evo9 pump back in this week and then I should be good to go with a fresh tank of 93 octane. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Thanks to Ryan (MustGoFaster) I'm now rolling on 245 series sticky's:
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/SDC12049.JPG http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/SDC12048.JPG http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/SDC12051.JPG So if anyone is looking for some really wide wheels on the cheap, go get some 3/s wheels and be prepared to grind. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Finally had my transfer case leak fixed today. Had the local chrysler dealership run my VIN through and turns out my 91 Talon has never had the recall done. So they put an order in for the only t-case seal in MN and it arrived today. An hour later and I had a leak free t-case. Felt so happy. No hassle at all, I was very happy.
Just received my 3 quarts from Jack's transmission dot com also today and have to say, this is the best fluid I have ever used in my transmission. Use to stick with Penzoil Synchromesh and recently had some cheap stuff from work which was the worst ever... Put this fluid in and what a difference it made. Transmission makes way less noise then before, shifts a whole lot smoother. It really is a treat. The car is just about ready for the cookout. Need to swap the Evo9 pump in and still have to have my wideband o2 bung welded in the exhaust. Still too many things this car could use but I'm really happy with it at the moment. |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Still daily driving the talon. I had to drive my Stratus this weekend to the Dell's with my woman's family. It was so frustrating driving a slow car, I was not happy at all. The more I drive the DSM daily the more I want to sell the Stratus...
Car seems to still be running good. I keep having a problem of sucking water through my intake pipe. I need to make a box around the filter to water-proof it. The main area I think it's coming in is where the stock sidemount use to be, that hole is still wide open. Once it sucks water in my i/c pipes get water in them and my MAFs gets water on it. Won't let me rev above 4k when this happens. I will say though the last few times this happened I was blasting up a dirt road when it was down pouring pretty good. If I drive around normally or on the highway and avoid standing puddles, I'll be okay. |

Re: Project Winter Beater
Received my poly sway bar bushings for the front today in the mail. Also ordered front control arm bushings and torque solutions drive shaft bushings.
I now almost have my complete suspension bushing kit. I have: -Front subframe -Front and rear sway bar bushings & endlinks -Rear upper control arm bushing -Front control arm bushing I plan to get the rear subframe and mustache brace bushings from Tuner Nation and the solid toe links off jaysracing.com. I also scored some used front Gab HD rally shocks and some springs: http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...00822-1700.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...00822-1700.jpg Anyone know anything about them? |
Re: Project Winter Beater
Well GAB's are pretty much manufactured by KYB. KYB just revalves them per GAB's specs. Most reviews say that they are pretty stiff as well.

Re: Project Winter Beater
i have no clue on the springs, unless they were bought as complete assemblys new and were taken apart for some reason. the taller springs would make things pretty firm i would think.
|
Re: Project Winter Beater
I asked the guy I'm buying them from if he knows anything and he said he doesn't. He said he parted out a GVR4 and these were with it. We'll see when they get here.
On another note, I was also able to locate some Noltec rear mustache and rear subframe bushings along with a set of Ingall's rear adjustable control arms. This completes my bushing collection and I just need to either get the Jays Racing toe eliminator links or weld the stock ones solid. Anyone have experience with either? |
