Who knows, maybe they'll give you a break on price or something if you do it all in one shot.

Re: High Knock in my Talon

Well, figured I'd revive this thread yet again. Just got the new head on. I have the revised lifters in there. Still getting my phantom knock. Again it's only when I'm below like 3500 RPM. I am set at like 16-17psi because I can't get it any lower. I have a half & half mix of 91 & 110 or whatever it is that they sell at the Mobile1 station. I have new lifters, tried the MCCC cleaner, replaced the knock sensor, base timing is set to 5, brand new head from FFWD, fixed about 95% of my exhaust leaks, I've tried richening it up with my SAFC, Rotella-T oil in it, nothing seems to be working. I can still here a little ticking when the engine is idling. I have no idea what it is, but I can hear it slightly. I am going to try retorquing the Knock Sensor again. What size socket does that take? And I think someone in here said it should be torqued to like 6? Is that right? Do I need to use teflon or anything on the threads?

Re: High Knock in my Talon

Well to answer my own question, the knock sensor is a 24mm for anyone else who cares. I don't have a spare socket to cut a slot in for the wire, so I just played with tightening and loosening it with a normal wrench, and also put a washer on it as I heard other people had luck with that. Now it's a little better, but it's still there none the less. I found I have a pretty good exhaust leak at the o2/downpipe flange that I thought I fixed months ago, but I guess not. I'm going to fix that, hopefully that will quiet things down a little. I doubt that will fix it, but I feel it's worth a shot, plus it'll quiet the car down a little which is always nice!

Are you positive that your timing is all aligned correctly? I had knock at times when my timing was off a tooth.

I dont know, if the head is brand new and it still knocks maybe your ecu isnt reading it correctly or some other electrical gremlin is causing it to read knock? Try swapping ECUs if if comes down to it.

Re: High Knock in my Talon

Thanks Peter. Yes I'm sure the timing is all lined up correctly. The ECU has also been refreshed a few months ago by steve on DSMTuners. Also I just put in a brand new O2 sensor as well. I really am confused on this one now.

Figure it out?

No. I'll be putting in a new motor this winter, so hopefully that will cure it. I've tried everything else. I am completely stumped.

Re: High Knock in my Talon

gehy, question: was it hard to do the lifters? and advice? i have to do this too because i'm getting real bad knock, and i am getting it sometimes not under load or boost around 3k.

On a side note, does your car have high miles and stock pistons (no rebuilds)? i have heard of piston slap which can apparently set off your knock sensor, but it rare'ish

My car has about 110 on it, stock block. Lifters are fairly simple, just make sure you compress them before you put them in.

Well after going crazy over this ever since the first day I bought me car, my knock issues now seem to be gone. After switching to E85, and using an intake that places the filter by the stock SMIC location, I have not been seeing tons of knock anymore. Yaay!!

My car has always been noisy too, hopefully E85 will cure mine too! Did you get her tuned in some more? How much boost are you up to?

Re: High Knock in my Talon

Maybe you have too much clearance in balance shaft or oil pump shaft bearings. or broken piston skirts.

kiichi.

Re: High Knock in my Talon

Jet - I'm still running 20psi. I have played with it a little bit, but hasn't been tuned at all yet. Waiting until I get an intake fabed up before I throw it on the dyno. But it's still fairly untuned.

Dragon - This happened in my old motor, and in my new motor with 1700 miles on it. That leads me to believe it has nothing to do with the motor.

I doubt the intake had much to do with it. E85 solved all my knock problems as well. (this is starting to sounds like an infomercial). ;)

Hmm sounds like octane limitations that E-85 is fixing...

It could be hot spots that the cooler running E-85 is curing too.

I bring up the intake because there was a thread on the link forums about placing the filter in the smic location. They were receiving significantly less
knock after moving the filter there. I did it at the same time as I switched to e85, so I can't say 100% or not if it helped. But those 2 things are what I did and I ripped her around the neighborhood a good bit and didn't have any knock.

If it was hot spots, wouldn't the new head and new block have fixed that?

Nice dude! Just whatever you do, do NOT turn up the boost anymore or you will leave me in your rear-view mirror!!! :D
