Get something that will be stable at high speeds.

Should we start a different thread to gather interest?

I know a few guys on t00ners have converted their AWD to FWD for drag purposes. Seems like all the fast 14b cars are FWD just because they are so much lighter. Not sure what all goes into doing the swap, but I bet you could find a 1.8 rear subframe for dirt cheap if thats the route you wanted to go.

Paul, how much lighter are Scummits and Colts than 1g's?

Stock the lightest one (CSM) I've owned was a 4-speed cable clutch which was around 2150, give or take. The lightest 1g I've had was a 1991 Laser RS which came in at around 2570 (junk yard scale, so how knows how accurate)

So call it, stock to stock, 420-ish lbs.

When we had the silly notion of building a Colt for Spec E36 racing --er I mean Chump-- we had a 3rd gen hatch down to 1784, fully drivable.

We had not even begun to cut excess sheet metal out, or get creative with alternate materials... I've never properly gutted a 1g before, so not sure where that would end up. I suspect gutted vs gutted there would be less difference between the two, especially when you consider the engine and gearbox swap.

Seems like quite a few of the 1g fwd guys that are tin canning their cars are getting them down to the 2,000-2,100 lb mark without too much of a problem or cutting sheet metal out.

I think Joe Bucci's Project GoodWill weighs ~ 2,000 and he ran 140mph on a 16g. :D
