I did a few 2nd gear pulls that felt great. I think the car could be dancing on some different load cells perhaps, tough to know. It's really cold out too which seems to do weird things on my car...like one pull will be awesome then it will seem to fall on its face. This wasn't the best example as I started a bit high for rpms and also stopped short with some knock counts popping up. I think it will feel awesome once the tune is adjusted for the manifold, then a way better comparison will be had. This was my dd tune on the graph...I think it was spiking cause of the cold. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
So this morning everything was going great. Got up early for cars and coffee meet...was way hung over but had a good time last night... (I was trying to make a silly face...but I think I was pretty drunk too )
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/IMG_1522.jpg Then got in the car to go to the meet and some guy was driving like a tool so this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yl82F815Wl0&hd=1 Then went to the meet, all was going well, car was running super strong as you can see...then I downshifted into 3rd to race this lexus that wouldn't stop honking at me and right when I engaged third a very very very bad noise happened. So I put it back into 5th and it seemed fine no noise. Then cruised a bit further and the noise came back very faintly and started getting a bit worse but nothing like 3rd gear was so I thought maybe the tranny crapped out...was bound to happen. So pulled over and then this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LkY-SrVTvY&hd=1 Got the car home and my mechanic buddy listened as I turned the car on and the noise was back very audible and he said shut it off. He said sounds like rod knock from cylinder 2 or 3... Seriously, WTF! I don't even know what to do now. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Ouch, horrible news. You now how the saying goes, you gotta pay to play. Sounds like you're learning the hard way, and really quickly.
Good luck, and us Blainian's like to stick together, so let us know if you need a hand with anything. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Ouch :(
What are the specs of this engine? Wasn't it just built a few thousand miles ago? |

Who wants to have a motor pull session? Beer and pizza is about all I can offer. I guess it could come to that, but I need to know the shortblock can be salvaged and thats if DB doesn't do anything for me, I have no idea what they are going to say. Who knows, this seriously blows. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Twas not a good day for evos. Hope you can get it back on the road and don't give up.

This always sucks, no fun blowing shit up with that low of mileage. I'm pretty close by and could give a hand if needed.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Yup, I can help pull it as well as long as I'm available. My schedule is usually pretty screwy however. And I've never worked on an X...
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Like I said the only way I would even bother pulling it unless I am pretty damn sure it is possible to salvage the block. If anything is wrong in the lower end, which sounds like its the case, I am hoping a resleeve with new pistons/rods will do the trick. It's still basically a full rebuild but if we want to make a mitsustyle meet out of everyone playing with my car I am fine with that, lol. I don't expect this to be resolved anytime soon...it'll be a while before anything happens I am sure.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Goddamn....What a way to start the season, huh? Sorry to hear about your misfortunes. If I have the day off and you're wrenching maybe I'll have to make the long haul up and lend a hand. Did you at least have AAA for a free tow?

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
That really sucks dude :( Hopefully it's not too bad...

Call me ill come help!
Quick question? And this is just a question! Did map touch your tune? |

Did you retune for the new manifold at all or no?

I don't think it was the tune, I was logging the car pretty consistently and it looked fine. But you never know. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Terrible day...
I'm starting to think that I am very bad luck considering I watched your first engine blowout from 50 yards back, and now this... hope DB helps you out. http://i.imgur.com/piPubh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/rsp7Xh.jpg |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I say let DB look it over before you touch anything, or even post it on the internet....oh too late hehe. Well SGH still has my engine hoist and he's not too far from you.
Simplest thing to do imho is to jack the car up, pull the oil pan (drain it first obviously) and see if you can wiggle any of the rods....there is a video somewhere that I took of Jim shaking his fast back and forth and you can obviously hear a problem. zoinks! found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTEFv2wfx2w&hd=1 Again, sorry dude :( |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I am not trying to say anything bad about anyone. I am simply conveying the situation as of now.
My plan for this week is to talk to DB tomorrow and hopefully get the car towed to them early in the week. Then I'd like to be there for them to pull the oil pan and more importantly check the flywheel/clutch out. My ONLY glimmer of hope is that flywheel bolts backed out. I am revving to 9k so I guess its possible. I have had a bunch of people on the national forums suggest this and even 2 or 3 that said they had this happen on their Evo X. And they said they didn't know it was the flywheel bolts until the dropped the tranny. One guy even said without a stethoscope he thought it was rod knock in the center of the motor as well, just like mine sounds. So basically I am praying to god that is it. Even swifty messaged me saying the same thing, so apparently that is a common thing, which gives me the slightest bit of hope, but with my luck I am not holding my breath. I'll call DB in the morning and report back after they look at it. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I was on a S2k cruise once and it sounded like a guy destroyed his engine after a mis-shift; it was the flywheel bolts and the engine was fine.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Kind of a dammed if you do dammed if you don't troubleshooting method but rod knock will go away if you pull the injector plug for the cylinder with a spun bearing. Basically start the car, pull the coil or injector plug for each cylinder.
Also rod knock is most pronounced when you let off of 2000-3000 revs, unless the bearing is absolute toast and knocks all the time. It will be sound very rythmik. Flywheel bolts are a possibility. Had it happen to me on my 2.4 builds and if you would have heard CornFed 2.4's talon (my old talon) this past summer when a flywheel bolt came loose, you would have swore it was motor. It was awful, ask Aaron. If I can help. let me know. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Thanks Jim.
Hopefully in a week or so we will figure out what happened and we will go from there. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Hrm.....flywheel bolts....interesting theory but could certainly be a possibility!
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Jim hit it on the head. I couldn't take listening to it and had him turn the car off right away.
Weekends/friday nights are good for me, just let me know. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Hopefully it's the flywheel bolts, that would be sweet. Also, it's easy to tell if you've got rod knock, the rod will pivot front to back on the crank journal, even though it looks perfect from underneath. I had that on my 2.4 block I'm building.
