I was just using M1 5w-30 (stock stuff)...hopefully that wasn't the cause of the motor failure :(

I will switch to whatever shane recommends...looks like the Amsoil 10w40 after motor break in.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

You can get Mobil 1 5W-40 or 10W-40 at Walmart for half the price of Amsoil.

IMO, Amsoil is nothing but over-hyped propoganda since it's marketed with a pyramid scheme. It's a good oil, but not THAT good. Great marketing decision on their part though.

If Shane says it works as good I will by all means do it...I am not putting my brand new motor at risk though, lol. I have seen comparisons of M1 vs Amsoil and usually Amsoil is way ahead but I am no oil expert.

Look at who pays for those "independent" lab tests though.

Like I said...I shall do whatever Shane/Danny tell me to do...if they say just use synthetic and this weight...then i will probably just stick with M1...however I forgot to say, I chose not to support Walmart whenever possible, i hate that corporation...

LOL so does Scheides. I personally love it. It saves me a ton of money and they've done what most other American companies can only dream of. Plus they bring jobs to depressed areas and employ the otherwise unemployable.

I don't hate the store or the employees or the atmosphere...i just hate how they do business...shitting on everyone they can basically to make a small profit.

I don't disagree they run a tight ship, but I go to target whenever possible for that kind of store.

I only go to Walmart typically when I am lazy and one is close or at 3am or something when its all that's open.

Sooooo, hate to bring up a tender subject, but that rod that snapped, the end of it was still attached to the crank....did you or DB ever pull it off the crank and see if the bearing was spun at all? Furthermore, pulling the rest of that block apart to try and diagnose what exactly happened?

Nope, I have thought about it a lot though...i know way back when you had always said to check that and I have thought about asking them. I bug them a lot though and I am personally not sure how long it takes to check that. I was thinking I would play with the block myself when I got it back.

Is it hard to do? Maybe I can talk Kracka ;) or someone in to helping me if it's easy next Friday, the block is sitting at DB still.

I just know I bug danny and shane way too much already.

But yes, the rod is still connected to the crank, well half the rod.

Shane only said that because I'd already brought up Amsoil. I'm sure that M1 would be fine. It's not all that much more expensive, though...depends on where you get your M1. The M1 'oil change' jug (4.5 qts?) was like $33 last I checked. Amsoil is about $10 more.

I need to find a better hook-up for the Amsoil is all...buying from their online store is no bargain.

Honestly it would be cool to pull it apart yourself, I'd even love to help, but IMHO an experienced engine builder would be who you want to do it. They might notice something some of us novices might not :D

I'll be at DB next friday too, maybe we wrangle danny and talk him into helping us take a peak. ;)

Well I could probably take off of work a few hours early next friday, get there around 230 or 3 to take a look. My new motor should be progressing by then hopefully as well.

I'll toss Danny an email about it here later.

M1 10w-40 is $21.00 @ walmart for a 5 quart jug !

I really don't care that much about oil brand. I don't like M1 though. It's overhyped more than Amsoil. Do I ever see problems with Amsoil? No. Do I ever see problems with M1? Yes all the time. Do I see much problems with any brand besides M1? Not really. I usually run Castrol, Napa or Rotella.

Ok, I'll be there around 2 with hughes for his tune. Anna will be along shortly with the pups to scoop me up and we're headed up north for the weekend, so who knows how long I'll stick around for.

FWIW I've run M1 10w30 in all of my DSMs and Evos, no issues yet. Of course, I've never made more than around 400whp, so I assume the 'big power' cars shane is talking about are 500+. I like this oil discussion, maybe we should start a thread about it :D

That's the place to get it, then.

Since I already had a $130 case of Amsoil 0w30, I think I'll just mix it 50/50 with 20w50 until it is used up. It averages out to 10w40, right? Somehow I doubt the math is that simple but I guess that's better than using 30.

AMS Spec JE pistons will be at DB tomorrow, just got word from AMS :)

More money for them over the Manley's but able to handle more power and I don't have to wait for the rest of the summer for them.

Kracka 07-15-2010 01:26 PM

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

What's different about "AMS spec" compared to off the shelf JE's?
