http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...o_41.sized.jpg

I don't think its really any taller, the head almost seems thinner but with no lifters or rockers I imagine it is at least slightly smaller. The longblock probably looks taller for two reasons...first because of the oil pump; it bolts to the bottom of the shortblock and into the oil pan, you can see it in this pic (the lower chain). Secondly there is a whole cover that wraps around the bottom covering the crank caps, crank and rods as they spin down, almost helping prevent windage from the oil in the pan...I don't think there is a piece like this on a 4G63.

So deceiving! That oil pump sprocket really does visually lengthen the engine.

Looks great though! Glad to see you're making progress even with a bum knee!

Me too! This is one of the simplest engines I've seen for timing.

Making some good progress! looks great!

Clearly Scheides had the air compressor tuned locally and it is putting down some serious numbers, otherwise I don't see how all the progress could have been done. Scheides.. we demand dyno graphs!

Re: beaterX project thread

Wasn't going to work on the car tonight but I got a few quick hours in...old shortblock is SOLD and I either had to mess around with hoist/stand to pack it up or just get the new longblock the heck out of the way...so I cleaned and bolted up the water pump/tstat housing, bolted up the flywheel and the HDG6 with a fresh disc and slid it onto the trans:

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._002.sized.jpg

Then old motor is back on the stand, pistons and rods are coming out before it ships out, need to find a beefy 7/16" 12-point socket asap and get this thing off to its new owner...he has plans to sleeve it and do a 2.2L :)

Also, heard from FIC today, they got my 1680's and cleaned them up and are shipping them back to me....they said they were as much as 8% out of balance, that is kinda scary! She'll purr like a kitten now though :)

Found a surge tank with media for you :) It's not cheap though lol.

Jesus titty fucking christ. I think they want enough for it. Mishimoto makes one very similar and for just about as much too. Retarded when you can buy a Saikou Michi for 1/4 the price IMO.

Are you talking about a surge tank or catch can here? Murlo says surge tank and website says catch can.

Apparently you (or I specifically?) cannot! I've emailed him several times with no response, and email is apparently the only way to order.

I was just researching surge tanks, that was when I say the catch can, the link was for a catch can.

Got the pistons/rods out of the old motor last night. Here's a look at the piston from cyl1:

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._003.sized.jpg

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._002.sized.jpg

Rings seem smooth but the crown (?) of the piston obviously has some damage around it. The marks on the piston line up with the marks on the cylinder wall, so that piece fo spark plug obviously got stuck alongside the edge of the piston/wall, did some damage and then either disintegrated or flew out the exhaust.

Little scuffing around the skirt, all cylinders have this but this one is about 10x worse than the others (due to the scraped cyl walls I'm sure):
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._003.sized.jpg

Rod bearing on #1, a few others have small wear marks like this and the black around the one edge but for 25k miles of 550-600whp I'm thinking they are not too shabby!

Next to a 2G DSM rod for beef comparison. These rods are built for doing some epic power!

Re: beaterX project thread

Well just like I thought, work owned me most of the rest of the week. Finally got into the garage today and cranked in one bolt after the other for a couple hours...made some progress despite several 'ghey bolts' and my own stumbles :P

Wiring harness ready to string up:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._001.sized.jpg

all accessories, pullies, IM, fuel rail, harness, and turbo system bolted up and ready to go back in the...wait what the....
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...to_8.sized.jpg

I forgot to bolt up the m-f'ing xfer case! I had left it on the trans jack in the corner of the garage since I was sick of tripping over it....
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._001.sized.jpg

Gah! I ended up trying to bolt it up through the bottom but the dang thing is so huge even with the downpipe off there's no chance of getting it up through the bottom. So, off with the turbo system again, on with the xfer case, and on with the turbo/mani/downpipe. Since I had the downpipe off I inspected the ef4 again and it's looking ready to rip!
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._001.sized.jpg

Axles took about 30 seconds to put back in and suddenly I was ready to do the deed.
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._001.sized.jpg

bolted up the chains, up with the chassis, and yoink in goes the motor/trans/subframe:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._001.sized.jpg

Fiddled with the motor mounts for a few minutes and decided it was enough for the day:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._001.sized.jpg

So, a few more hours of work and she'll be ready to fire up...hopefully next weekend I'm ripping around in this thing and breaking in the motor/clutch...Proving Grounds I see you coming!

I just work here :)

Spent about 2 hours last night with the help of Rosey, Spaz, Murlo, and my 4-year-old neighbor kid. Motor is back home. 2 motor mounts, 6 frame bolts, , 6 little chassis-stiffening bolts, 4 driveshaft, 2 downpipe, 1 ACD line, and some Grain-Belt Nordeast done....

Re: beaterX project thread

Memorial day weekend, I got a few hours here and there to work on the car! I was gunning to fire it up but as I went to button up everything I found a bit of a roadblock...nothing to screw the oil filter into!

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._006.sized.jpg

The missing fitting is on the old block which is sold and out of state already...sigh. I got some seriously mixed info from a few Mitsubishi dealer parts counters, but I believe what I'm looking for is part MN163825 and I heard everything from it being on backorder/discontinued to 'I can't find it on the parts diagram.' So, anyone that could verify it, I appreciate the help! blackrosenova pulled apart his 1G oil filter housings and they do not appear to be close, way too long.

But, I forged on! All accessories are bolted up and belt is on, power steering is plumbed and filled, radiator hoses and all coolant lines hooked up and coolant is filled.

Filled the trans and xfer case in floppy sandals w/o getting my hands dirty:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._001.sized.jpg

Disassembled my Cobb BOV for its yearly lube-up:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._001.sized.jpg

Struts are back in, shifter cables and clutch slave done, FMIC mounted back up, UICP, LICP, and intake back on, ECU is in, all wiring connected (except for the battery):
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...o_24.sized.jpg

Brakes are apart, I need some brake cleaner then I'll be installing my Girodisc SS pads and some freshly turned evoX MR 2-piece rotors. So close!

Oh, and gotta bleed the ACD line...I got a copy of tephra's tool for doing that, hopefully it works!

Just talked to the parts department at WhiteBear Mitsubishi...they tracked down another dealer with the part, its getting shipped this way....ETA Next Tuesday :( so now I'm officially going to be waiting on a $3 part....sigh.

Any way to McGuyver the part? Any dealerships have scrap blocks laying around that may be a retro fit? I am guessing it is not the same as the base lancer.

I met this crazy guy Kung probably like 4-5 years ago, he was working at a small shop near my house and had just bought a shiny new IX...years later he's worked at RS and built the heck out of his car and tonight he called me up...said he had a little thing out of a hyundai 4b11 motor and thought I might want it :)

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._005.sized.jpg

Picked it up, threaded it in, fit perfect!!!! Put on oil filter, topped up the oil, checked connections (missed one plug), turned over a few times w/o injectors to help circulate oil and then she fired right up! Got it good and hot while sitting there and then changed the oil.

Also got my front 2-piece MR rotors (thanks Shane!) turned tonight (thanks spazzy!) and they'll go on the car tomorrow with the orange Girodisc SS pads.

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._007.sized.jpg

After that, bleed the ACD, check the oil and off we go!
