If I am not hanging with the woman that night I could swing by to help, just text if you need it.

I'd love one but I don't think I do actually! It sure would let me do this entire job by myself if I have to, but that sure is no fun!

Re: beaterX project thread

Stuff happened. Dropped motor out in about an hour of goofing around. Would recommend this method to any X owner, it was almost painless. Only snag is really being careful about seperating the steering column.

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...o_10.sized.jpg

Once we used the hoist to get the engine on the ground we bolted up to the engine mount points and started lifting:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-..._001.sized.jpg

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...o_12.sized.jpg

Didn't have to go nearly as high as you would expect, only about a foot:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...o_14.sized.jpg

Then roll it out the side:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...o_15.sized.jpg

Engine is very stable on two wheel dollies and some 2x12's, can move it around without fear of tipping or anything.
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...o_13.sized.jpg

Clear the decks, then lower chassis back down nice and slow.
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...o_17.sized.jpg

End result is a bunch of shit out of the car, super easy to disassemble...:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...to_2.sized.jpg

...an empty engine bay...:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...to_5.sized.jpg

...and a happy scheides :)

Thanks Rosey, Spaz, Shawn, Murlo, and Anna! Having extra hands is always a huge plus--safety first!

Once it was out I spent about an hour or so and popped off axels, all manifolds, accessories, turbo system (as a whole), etc then put her to bed for the night:

Final shoutout to Ron@RS for giving me this idea of going 'out the bottom' it was way easier than I thought it would be!

That's cool that you took it out the bottom, my dad always says it'd be easier but I never believed him.

When you put it all back together will you have to get an alignment because you took so many things apart?

Aaaaannndddd We fixed Scheides air compressor too last night! Who knew you could blow a head gasket on an air compressor... must be a mitsu designed part.

I don't really think so, the strut bolts will all go back in the way they came out (arrows in on top bolts), the subframe bolts are immobile, the tie rods and everything else is untouched other than being lowered to the floor. Steering rack will need to be bled but as long as I get the steering wheel back in straight there should be no other problems.

lmfao that was the most amazing thing I've seen in a while man! Frickin dude pulls the head off my air compressor and examines cyl walls, piston, and then yanks a make-a-gasket roll off the shelf of my garage, cuts out a new one, slaps it in and shit is golden. Unreal.

Unsure, life and work are my first priorities...lots going on so the car will get my attention when I have time. I'll get the block/trans apart and on the stand over the next few days or early next week, make sure the head still looks good, and go from there. Just hoping to have it back together and broken in by early June.

Nice! Who are you going to have tune your air compressor?

Yea it idles fantastic now! WOT only a few pulls but now that we have the motor back together I gotta hook up the wideband and see what it's doing. Planning on running ~100psi of boost on the first pull, let'r buck!

Spent a little time this afternoon and yanked xfer case, pulled out the transmission, and tore down to the shortblock.

Also took a pile of my spare valve tappets and sorted out valve clearances...we'll see how well my math works when I bolt the head to the new shortblock.

I could never do an engine with buckets on my own. Seems way too complicated for this dumb ass prison guard.

Once you've done it a few times it's not so bad :)

Injectors are in the mail to FIC to get cleaned/tested and I think its time to buy some new flywheel bolts. I have to unmount the current shortblock and unpack/clean up the new one...I may assemble the longblock tomorrow but I need to decide about getting the flywheel turned and a few other things so I don't think I'll get too much further than that.

goodhart 05-11-2013 11:45 PM

Re: beaterX project thread

Do any locals have their injectors done at Ravenworks in Maple Grove?

Who you having do the flywheel?

scheides 05-12-2013 12:05 AM

Re: beaterX project thread

Yes they do but since other people have had issues with 1680's I wanted FIC to look them over :)

Dunno if I'm even going to bother machining the flywheel, clutch had some good meat left on it...again, I gotta look things over and figure out the rest of these details still...

Dsm flywheels require the outer edge to be a specific height (.610") off of the center, by design. It's a silly thing but everyone with a 1g or 2g got to deal with it on every clutch job over the last 23 years.

Started with a little more swapping of valve tappets this morning to make the clearances as perfect as possible.

Slow day but after dinking around with the timing many times over, cleaning, cleaning, and re-cleaning...longblock! Just need some accessories, manifolds, wires, and flywheel/clutch!

I'll be sending my 2000's to get flow tested and cleaned there. I believe they said it's $22 per injector, but includes new o-rings and before/after comparison.

Damn that timing job looks easy! Maybe I've been looking at Subaru motors too long but your longblock looks REALLY tall in this picture. Are the 4B11's any taller than an Evo 4G63?
