My first set of Dunlop Z1s lasted me 19 autocross events and around 20k street miles. At that point they were at or below the 2/32 wear bars. This was with very aggressive camber (for a street car) and zero toe, negative 2.5-3 in the front, 1-1.5 in the rear.

The fact that they insisted on giving the car something other than 0 toe when it is street driven (your only car) and is not trailered to the track absolutely concerns me. It's just like any salesperson trying to sell you something that you don't need instead of finding out exactly what your application is and then providing you with the proper product or service.

Maybe I'll give him another try next Spring if I only need an alignment.

That's just how he is. Customer service isn't his forte, but he does damn good work and warms up to you once he gets to know you, and you him. If you want corner weighting done I'd go to Orr Autosport.

That's very good. I just need to get the rear toe out of there. I'm running -2.5/-1.5 right now. Zero toe in front but he dialed in like .26 in the rear.

<--- My daily driver really is a `94 Plymouth Acclaim. The Evo is a toy that usually has a problem or three. At the moment it has a screw in a tire and is parked until a replacement tire comes in, hopefully Wednesday.

I do drive it to/from the track so you're right on that front. I'm going to get that toe taken out.

Does he have fixed prices? I've heard it said that he's very reasonable but taking time off from work and dealing with b.s. might not be worth it to me. Stellar gave me a loaner car. My boss is annoyed about all of the lost work related to the car this year as it is.

Jeff is open on Saturday which solves your time away from work issue :) I always tried to get his first appt Saturday morning.

IMHO, my approach would be to learn how to drive the car (not saying you don't) and then approach changes from there. Don't like the turn-in? Work on adjusting that. Don't like how the rear end is reacting? Work on adjusting that.

Again IMHO, I think better driving can often cut off more time than a mod here or a mod there. Case in point, my uncle took The Kink at Road America at 100mph. Randy Pobst driving my uncle's same car on the same day, same conditions, took it at 110mph.

Words of wisdom. If you want your car to be faster around a race track then you need to mod yourself and not the car.

The rear toe eating tires doesn't require any particular skill to spot.

I can only afford one day per month at BIR, due to vacation time, etc. I don't care if I'm the slowest guy up there. I have different objectives than most of you.

Mostly this hobby is to keep my mind occupied. There's just a ton and a half to learn...about everything. Driving is just one of those things.

You can't be cool just working on the driver mod either.

So the car is running good and you are driving it daily?
How are you liking it?

Not driving it right now `cause I found a screw in a tire on Sat morning. Discount Tire had to order one in so maybe Wednesday.

The car is fine other than the weekly o2 sensor CEL. Was on my way to Dad's Saturday morning to change the oil and see about swapping that out. Didn't make it there.

turbotalon1g 08-03-2010 11:30 AM

Re: Evo X upgrades

^sorry about the screw.

couldn't it be plugged? Usually unless its on the shoulder of hte tire you can plug and drive around, but they probably told you that.

Shitty.

It was right on the outside edge, like 1" in. I had their road hazard insurance so it actually paid off for once.

Got a new Star Spec installed at Discount Tire over lunch. The manager told me that Dunlop had discontinued the Star Spec and they had a tough time finding one for me. Has anyone heard about a replacement?

Kracka 08-04-2010 02:50 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

I haven't. TireRack doesn't show them as discontinued yet, but if they do I might have to watch for a good clearance sale!

Hell if they discontinue them, I don't think they will have a hard time selling the remaining ones at a lower price.

I'd probably buy an extra set for when my current ones go!

mlomker 08-04-2010 02:54 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

What he said is that Dunlop themselves no longer have any...they are still available in distribution. He had to order mine from a competitor, basically. I wouldn't take Discount Tires' word as fact but it took me by surprise since I hadn't heard anything.

BriK 08-04-2010 04:21 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

Considering Star Specs are widely viewed as one of the best street performance tires available, I sincerely hope (and really doubt) Dunlop would entirely discontinue them-- at least not without having a replacement or extension following closely behind.

Kracka 08-04-2010 04:23 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

Hopefully they listen to consumers and make something with equal/better performance that's lighter in weight.

Re: Evo X upgrades

The rumor is false:

Rumor

Tire rack is now the exclusive distributor of the Star Spec. Buy now or pay more later..

Matt D. 08-04-2010 04:50 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

Believing anything Discount Tire says is just asking for insult. When the Dunlop Z1 first came out (pre Star Spec) they didn't even know what it was, two different stores tried selling me a DZ101 instead.

mlomker 08-04-2010 05:07 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

Yeah, I found out about that poking around the Internet. I almost used Tire Rack the last time but I wasn't sure who I'd have mount them. I guess that settles it for my next set.

Tire Rack has a Lancer on the main page right now. Not an Evo...maybe an RA. Not familiar with those wheels.

Re: Evo X upgrades

I like it, actually. I had an `01 325xi. It was black with no mods whatsoever.

My instructor at the last track day had an M3 and that thing was tits. He had an unsprung 4 puck in it so it was a fair ways from a daily driver.

I'm bringing the Evo to Primo tonight to see what they can do for an intake. I got my replacement FMIC from Perrin so debating on when I'll put that in. I could either do it this weekend or wait until I'm ready to install the splitter. I'm getting tired of messing with the car at this point and have lost my steam.

I bought a growler from Granite City and I've found that a lot more interesting the last few nights. lol.

Yum! They have some pretty good beers.

Ever been to a Bosco's? Similar to a Granite City with very good beers.

I figured youd like that bmw lol. The wing and decals totally make it look like crappp.

Murlo26 08-05-2010 03:49 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

That isn't that many decals...but i agreed fully it looks better with the wing.

Looks don't win races though, maybe they actually track it and utilize the wing :) Doubtful but you never know.

Kracka 08-05-2010 03:50 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

Minus the wing and stickers it looks pretty good though.

mlomker 08-05-2010 03:53 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

No stickers for me. Volks are good. I like the tow hooks--the USDM Evo bumpers aren't threaded, otherwise I'd have one by now.

This post is for Murlo. The Primo intake is looking good. He's going to go 2" longer than this mock-up and he marked where the BOV pipe needs go on.

Re: Evo X upgrades

I helped...tee hee. I will say, it's WAY easier mocking parts up, when the car is there, but for only having the buschur tube there, not bad..

Re: Evo X upgrades

Thanks for the help! It's actually AMS. I know you've done a lot of this kind of stuff on your car but for me it's an adventure.

Re: Evo X upgrades

LOL, I didn't do a whole ton. Just tried to help Jesse get the angles right and such. Then I marked the pipes for him to weld. Not taking any credit away from him at all. Looks like the new intake will work for ya quite well. And, in seeing it on the car, I can see that there was some wiggle room afterall, which is what I thought. This staying a mas setup, or you doing a MAP? (I forget what x's have available for them)

That wing doesn't look right on it, either. I'm not sure what brand it is but the side plates look too small for it to be effective.

They don't have speed density for the X yet. I read a post from Tephra today saying that he was going to start working on it soon.

Murlo actually just send him a Omni 4bar this week so he can work on getting psi-based boost working up to 4 bar. There's a crap-load of stuff to figure out on the X yet.

Swifty1638 08-05-2010 08:41 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

aah. In that case, it will be interesting to see how Jesse can do the sensor setup on the pipe..

I'm hoping that by going up a size on a working design, our odds of getting an intake that'll work with the MAF are on our side.

Living in E85-land, we are making more power than usual on a stock-frame turbo.

Murlo26 08-05-2010 09:42 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

MMmmmmm, nice Lomker, nice :)

It looks good I must say, can't wait to see one in my Bay :)

Oh, and btw...the X's are actually both MAF cars and speed density cars already...Tephra is currently looking into the speed density maps the X has to see how we can tune them and do away with the dumb ass MAF.

Installed the replacement Perrin FMIC, some t-bolts, and fog deletes.

My jack sprung a leak so I'll need to take that to Northern Tool for warranty.
