If I end up pulling my motor a year from now then that little error will get corrected. It'll also give me some time to let other people spend their money to figure stuff out. I can't afford to be a trendsetter anymore. heh. |

Re: beaterX project thread
I spy three n00bs. Nice progress again, and as for being a trend setter/first to do something, it's not about the cost and time it takes, it's about knowing you were the first to do it. I love that feeling. :D
Cliff notes: put a carbed v8 in it. |
Re: beaterX project thread
Is that a terrorist? Oh wait wait, it's just Spaz :)

Lookee what showed up today :)

Goodbye! :D http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3574.sized.jpg |
Re: beaterX project thread
My lead weight is sitting in my garage...wait no, the basement, lol. I think it was there to try to maintain 50/50 weight distribution as best as possible, screw that!
Oh, nice FMIC! Looking sharp :) |

I was told on another board that we need to stop having Chuck Norris jokes and instead have jokes about things hidden in my beard. :rollinglaugh: No Shave November is almost done so I'll attempt to improve that situation as soon as it ends. |

Re: beaterX project thread
lol, back in the day, they didn't need to add weight to make the car equal weight front to back. Crazy, modern manufacturing techniques.

Re: beaterX project thread
Off-topic for this thread, but scheides' old BBK is looking good on E85.

http://www.scheides.com/albums/flori...0247.sized.jpg The new Kelford cam is in, I'm swinging up to DB tomorrow night with my cam cap to make sure it slides on easily, then back home to keep movin. If the cam doesn't fit, I'm not sure what I'll do. I have several days of fiddling around to do either way, but I'm not ruling out putting the stock cams back in, returning the kelfords all together and ordering an aquamist kit w/ the cash. S2's or a set of the kelfords can go in next spring if I'm feeling soucy :P Head is coming off, I will be putting in the little screen thing and re-torquing it with a fresh headgasket, that also comes in tomorrow. I'll post more info when I get it! |
Re: beaterX project thread
Dumb question, but why wouldn't the cam fit?
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Where the cam cap goes over the cam, one of the journals on the cam is machined to be 'snug' to (I assume) keep the cam in alignment. I can put the cam cap on my stock cam and it slips right on all the way, but on the original kelford it only went on about 80% of the way and got tight, then at 90% it'd nearly bind, and when torquing them down the cam couldn't even be turned over :(
Hopefully the new cam will fit just right and this sillyness can be over. I want my car back! |

Re: beaterX project thread
CAMS ARE HERE!
So here's a pic of cam cap #3 sitting on top of the first cam I got. Note how it doesn't quite sit down all the way on the cam: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...1556.sized.jpg Thanks to Shane at DB Performance for helping me get this sorted so quickly! He measured the new cam when it came in and was doubtful it would fit...so I brought the cam cap up with me and it slid right on! It was hard even for several sets of calipers to decipher the difference, so who knows...maybe it was out of round or something? New cams: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...1560.sized.jpg Got home, slapped them in immediately: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...1562.sized.jpg Enjoy them in there because they're coming right back out, time for some math! http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...1564.sized.jpg The 4b11t has buckets that sit on top of the valvesprings, then the cam sits on top of the buckets, like a honda. You put the cams in, measure all 16 clearances, then take them out, measure all of the buckets that are out of spec (with the new cams, springs, valves, ported head, its not surprising!), then figure out if you either want to rearrange all of them and try to make them fit, order new ones, or a combination of the two. I was able to bring all but 3 of the intake valves into spec (.008" +/- .001"), and the other 3 are only another .001" out of spec on the loose side. I would almost feel comfortable running them like this buuuut the exhaust side was just a mess. One had a gap of .003". The spec on that side is .012" +/- .001 so it was waaay out of spec. http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...1565.sized.jpg So after some extra time with the outside micrometer, shop manual, I had to choose between 47 different tappets to order, all are stepped up about .0006" from each other (.005mm). The ones that were far off I ended up ordering two tappets each, just to be sure I don't have to wait for extras. At $8.50 a pop this was another quick $100+ down into this thing, but this *should* be the last thing I need to put everything back together! I paid an extra $20 to get them overnighted so its gonna be head down this weekend and see how far we get! |
Re: beaterX project thread
I dealt with those buckets on a friend's Focus, worst fucking idea in the world.
