Re: beaterX project thread
Fun day! Swung out to MAP's new shop to pick up a small pile of parts and then up to Wagemon's to drop most of them off. MAP & Wag's really came through for me--I yanked the head wednesday night and delivered it Thursday, and as of 5pm today (Friday) the head was cleaned up and back in my hands :)
Here's what we figured out: valves and seats appear to be prematurely worn. All 8 exhaust valves were bent, just slightly. Lots of valves prematurely worn on the stem end. Spring seats are all deformed slightly, bending down all around the outside edge. http://i.imgur.com/Jaw37l.jpg http://i.imgur.com/kG7Odl.jpg Out with the 'old': http://i.imgur.com/mpkkgl.jpg In with the new parts: -GSC 5042 Beehive valvespring/retainer kit -8 new Supertech +1mm intake valves -8 new Supertech +1mm exhaust valves -16 new OEM valve seals/spring seats. More bad news? One of my cam journals shows signs of slight scoring. They believe one cam cap is slightly out of round due to my dumb-ass over-torquing the cam cap bolts with an inaccurate torque wrench (read: buy good tools and the right tools!) This cam cap is also over-drilled and double-helicoiled thanks to yours truely and really the only fix for all of this is a full line hone or a new head core. I'm in over my head here so I have no choice but to trust what I'm being told, and I don't like what I'm being told :( I had a set of GSC S2 cams ready to drop in but I couldn't bring myself to risk them. I asked them to just put the Kelford 214-B's back in and clean it up as best they could. For those keeping track, here's where we're at: -head trashed (but usable) -block trashed (but fixable with sleeving) -FML. So yea, gonna be big decision time pretty soon here but for now I'm off to drink a case of Grain Belt and then put the car back together in the morning. I got a nice set of MAP's H11 headstuds; these things are bad-ass! Anyone interested in a lightly-used set of ARP headstuds for CHEAP let me know! http://i.imgur.com/V4rr2l.jpg |

Sorry dood. :(

Re: beaterX project thread
Ouch. Stop by work tomorrow and I'll stop by your garage after, deal?

Re: beaterX project thread
Get together and running good. Then sell and buy godzilla.

But the rest sucks man. Do you thing the over tightening of the cam cap caused all of this then? Why bring the stuff to Wagamon and not have MAP do it? idk, Wagamon fucked up a motor of mine so I'm just not a big fan of them. |
Re: beaterX project thread
Did you get it back together this weekend?

Yanked the cams to bolt the head to the block (dumb design imho but whatever): http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3421.sized.jpg Freshy fresh: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3422.sized.jpg found a few nicks in the headgasket I got, not sure if that was from me or mitsu or what but I sure wish they would put these things in cardboard packaging, would be worth the extra $5 cost imho http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3423.sized.jpg I cleaned it up as best I could and used it anyways, it looks worse than it is I think. http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3424.sized.jpg gasket on, head bolted down, cams bolted in, gears on, timing chain mounted and timing set, chain tensioner set(this was one of my oopsies, put it in but forgot to tighten the bolts! doh!), and timing cover cleaned, RTV'd, installed, uninstalled, re-rtv'd, and re-installed :D http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3426.sized.jpg More freshy-fresh parts! I put in the revised timing chain from the 2010's: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3425.sized.jpg New on the left (mounted), old one on the right: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3427.sized.jpg After all the belt problems I had, bought a new tensioner and pulley. The pulley was like $65 and the tensioner + pulley was only like $30 more so I just got the whole assembly (still plastic but goes nice with my nice metal hyundai pulleys!) http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3428.sized.jpg So that's about it! Fired right up, no leaks yet, changed oil, fresh coolant, ripped it around the block a few times and parked it. Undertray, heat shields, and strut tower go back on tomorrow and it's back to DD duty for this pig. Car still sounds kinda diesely on cold start (but it always has a little) so its part injectors and maybe the rings on #1 are part of the problem. I'll just check the oil every 100 miles (as I have been all fall) and see what happens. Gonna check logs (did some quick pulls but with all the snow there's no traction!) and drink a beer. THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR INPUT! Thank you MAP for the parts and coordinating with Wagemon Bros machine shop, total downtime was only *three* days, not bad! |
Re: beaterX project thread
Did you have to mess with checking clearances on bucket to cams on these cars? The 2jz's are the same whee you have to remove the cams to install the headstuds as well.

Nice, and good choice on the GSC springs :)

That's awesome it was only down for 3 days!
Think you'll do some even crazier build down the line sometime? |

Re: beaterX project thread
Put about 80 miles on it yesterday, no issues other than I need to gap my plugs down a tad. Car fucking rips! Everything else just seems like a compromise to this car. For a lot of reasons I'm stuck with only one car so the whole summer/winter car is really not an option for me. Everything else is more expensive, only RWD, or doesn't have near the power potential.

Re: beaterX project thread
Compression, leakdown, and cam bucket measuring tonight. Remember Cyl#1 had the light broken spark plug damage to it:
Compression: 134 149 135 145 Leakdown: 30% 20% 20% 15% (cheap harbor freight tool--#1 def leaking past rings, but not horribly) Head clearances (specs are intake .008 exhaust .012 both +/- 1): Exhaust: (.009 | .009) (.010 | .011) (.010 | .011) (.011 | .012) Intake: (.005 | .007) (.010 | .009) (.007 | .007) (.008 | .006) After 120 miles no leaks, oil consumption is nil, and spark plug #1 looks ready for misfire (lots of carbon build-up probably from before head rebuild?). Happy-ish with compression, leakdown is not so bad but still makes me sad, and head clearances are not perfect but not horrible. I think next time I will request they end up more on the loose side but its fine for now. Time for a little virtual dyno (if the snow melts) and moar boost, we'll see how she runs (snow or no snow) through the rest of the winter. She's not perfect, but fuck it--it's a DSM! :P |
Re: beaterX project thread
Why is it a DSM?
It's not some old sports car that everyone beats the fuck out of and then is all surprised and cries when it breaks. |
Re: beaterX project thread
Scheides you are a beast! I couldnt handle this much work on a regular basis haha. Also whats wrong with rwd! :D Get a cheap old vw for DD and a fun veeight summer car.

Re: beaterX project thread
Only 2 of 16 valves are [barely] within spec...is the machine shop going to take any responsibility for this?
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Yeah, the exhaust is WAY out of spec.

Re: beaterX project thread
fuck! Just noticed I had intake/exhaust values reversed in my post. Please review :) They're not *that* bad.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Hey, now 7 of 16 are within spec. We're almost halfway there :p
IMO, machine shop owes you a redo, or a refund. I assume of course they had everything needed to properly measure/machine to these specs though? It's too bad MAP didn't have their machining equipment up and operational, unlucky timing for your vacation and their move :( |
Re: beaterX project thread
Any reason you had wagamon do it and not gosh? just curious
|
Re: beaterX project thread
I probably shouldn't speak for Scheides, but I think it was basically who ever could get it done ASAP same/next day.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Yip. Gosh is da bomb, cards just fell another way this time.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
The clearance numbers are a bit on the tight side, may burn some valves if you are not careful.

That plug had a ton of deposits on it, looked like ash to me, probably a symptom of your #1 oil consumption. |
Re: beaterX project thread
So, quick update on the X. Been driving it daily since January and VDR shows 580whp dynojet at 29psi and 600whp at 30 so the head is healthy and the motor is strong, but if you recall last fall I found this:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/IMG_3092.sized.jpg and when I pulled the head off for the rebuild I found this: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...3407.sized.jpg After getting the head rebuild and the car running again, the car has continued to burn more and more oil. Let'R buck has been my motto for a while but its gotten to 1 quart every 300 miles, even with driving nice. There's been several times that I'm getting ignition cutout from what I can only assume is excess oil in the cylinder and crank case pressure. I added a recirculation nipple on my intake for crank case vacuum but it made no difference. http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/AijEUVS.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/uUmvbyX.sized.jpg Talked to MAP over the last few weeks and decided to just pull the trigger on getting this thing fixed: Ordered an 100% new OEM Shortblock that will keep the stock crank, receive MAP Ultimate duty rods, and wiseco standard bore pistons. This will basically be identical to my existing engine but no overbore and Wiseco's instead of JE's. In May I plan on doing is yanking the longblock/trans and swapping everything over to the new shortblock, and drop it back in with fresh gaskets and a fresh clutch disc. What I'll have leftover will be an epic deal for someone: a sleevable core with a good crank, strong rods, and good pistons. One piston does have a small pit in it but I plan on disassembling the whole thing so the buyer knows exactly what they're getting into. A sleeved 2.0 setup is a solid $6k with core and if I can get $2k for mine someone will have one for more like $4k. Side story, I'm tired of the Rotas. LOVE them, but when I put my OEM wheels on for winter I just really like how the car sits with them, very simple looking. KISS. Mine are beat to hell from the previous owner, so I found a clean set and will be rocking these this summer. http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/a03NHWQ.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/aw19FiZ.sized.jpg My plan is to have the motor broken-in and issues all sorted by June and ready for kicking arse at Proving Grounds. No stupid wastegate or clutch issues this year, just going fast. As excited as I am for this, I am laid-up out in Montana after a 46-mph (thank you gps) ski crash and a trashed ACL in my left knee. Shifting or even leaving from a stop is not going to be my strong suit for a while, so...who knows what the eff will happen. Word to your moms. |
