Re: Meet GheyRay: Lower, Wider, Lighter!

So I've been poking around a bit, and it turns out that Comp makes a few cams that remain both VVT and AFM! Intersting... I suppose if I were to go this route, I could easily add in a pair of ported heads too. The problem is, by the time the bills add up, its not going to cost much less than just slapping on a Procharger

http://www.compperformancegroupstore...ode=Gen5XFIAFM

Stock cam specs for comparison: 0.551/.524-inch lift, 200/207 duration at 0.050-inch intake/exhaust, with a 116.5 lobe separation.

The mod bug has been getting me a bit lately, if for no other reason than just to do something to the car. These are the only camshafts I can find that don't delete the AFM (cylinder deactivation) system which is stupid to me; I paid for a technology and I want to benefit from it, especially considering all the long-distance roadtrips I take the car on. Some aftermarket cams completely delete the VVT (variable valve timing), but most do retain at least that, although the movement is limited from 62 to 22 degrees (I guess that's why the LT1 has a relatively mild stock cam, to get so much movement).

Does the AFM make that much of a difference?
Pat was saying it doesn't really in his truck, but it's a truck

Yeah, couple MPG on the highway. I only enable it when I have the cruise control set. I'm not willing to remove technology from the car, or make it any less livable on the streets.

Ive heard enough negatives about the cyl deactivation that id probably lean toward removing it too if you go the cam route.

Id probably just leave it stock cammed, haha. I bet that car is fun as it is!

No negatives here, works perfectly for me, especially since I can turn it on/off at will. It is quite fun as it is! I think I'm just itching to mod something...

As long as you arent burning any oil yet, thats good.

Heres a good read on a common issue http://www.tundraheadquarters.com/bl...l-consumption/

Could always stance it a bit? Get some new kicks and throw a body kit on it?

Maybe just send these guys a line and let em use your car to develop a C7 turbo kit :) That should cure the itch for awhile.

Re: Meet GheyRay: Lower, Wider, Lighter!

Those trucks use completely different engines than the new GenV small blocks. I don't have any oil consumption issues and I haven't heard of any problems with the C7/gen6 Camaro, and '13+ 6.2L Silverados. The difference may be then trying to add new technology to old engines, vs. designing a brand new engine from the ground up with the technology already in-mind. I know the engineers stressed how hard they worked on the PCV system alone, and this issue could be the very reason why. I do enjoy my 100k mile powertrain warranty though...I need to remind myself a mod like this would void it so there's another thing to consider.

I am thinking about doing a splitter and some sideskirts this winter. I'm already max lowered on the stock ride height bolts, and don't really want to go any lower since it already scrapes the rubber airdams on my driveway. No on the wheels since I already have the optional black 19/20 forged set. I could always try sneaking a set of ported heads in there, but that's a lot of labor to tear into the engine for minimal gains w/o a cam.

Must resist the urge to mod! Good call on the aero bits, I think that's a good idea.

HA! No. Seems like everyone who gets a C7 turbo kit immediately sells the car as soon as it lays down a glory pull on the dyno. Nobody will give a reason, but my guess is massive issues dealing with all the heat in the snug engine bay.

If I were to go with boost, it would likely be the Procharger, or maybe Edelbrock E-Force.

Supercharger

Exhaust driven supercharger... :D

Sounds like a good plan! I dont think porting the heads is a worthwhile idea. Id milk that warranty as long as you can and just cruise! Aero mods and maybe a sportier exhaust? Not sure whats on it now.

Right now I have ported/coated OEM exhaust manifolds, stock primary cats w/DEI heatshields, secondary cat-delete Borla X-pipe, and the optional NPP (dual-mode) mufflers.

Ahh okay yea then you are all set there!

If someone would have told us 10 years ago that wed be driving corvettes in 2016, we'd laugh so hard... lol

I would agree on the exhaust. The ported/coated manifolds showed nice gains on the dyno (+11whp/+8wtq) and flowbench, the primary cats are high-flowing 3" and don't seem all that restrictive, and the Borla X-pipe and NPP axle-back w/mufflers are all dual 2.75" diameter.

A guy I know tested a set of ARH mid-length headers w/HFC's and his gains were barely more than my ported/coated OEM manifolds on the same dyno (21st Century Muscle Cars in Addison, TX). He saw +11whp/+14wtq; so if I were to go that route, I'd spend $1500 and gain +6wtq and no whp.

Regarding your 2nd point...I would have told you that you're crazy

Rear mount turbos. :D

I have the oil issue with the AFM in my Tahoe, I just get the oil changed every 3000 miles and then I don't have to worry about it. Does kinda suck though, especially when I see no benefit at 14mpg.

Here's an AFM disable module you can plug into your OBDII port: http://www.diablosport.com/shop/spri...nt-module.html

Re: Meet GheyRay: Lower, Wider, Lighter!

I guess it comes down to if you think the service dept at your dealership would notice/care about the cam. If you think they would notice right away or void your warranty for it then don't do it. Really though the only way they'd ever know for sure is if you lost a motor. So only the person that eventually buys it from you needs to worry

But you might be able to get by with one of the milder ones without having to go nuts on the heads too with lifters, pushrods, springs, etc, etc

I hope those things have super heat resistant starters or come with one hell of a heat shield!
