Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

You can get a 2.3l shortblock from map for that. An evo stage 1 2.3l shortblock is $2450 without a new front case/bse. If you add a new front case it will add $400 to it

evotuner 01-24-2013 09:28 PM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

dont take shortcuts though, not saying you need front case/bse but theres a reason a lot guys go that route, plus new oil pan, oil pump, water pump, might as well do timing belt service as he has 115k, all the new fluids. shit just a oil change is 50-60 dollars if you add in the filter. it doesnt take long to spend an ass ton of money thats for sure. you have to love this hobby or its the worst investment ever lol

You definitely said it right there!

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Why would you buy a new oil pan? And the front case is generally only replaced on high mileage DSM's, it's not necessary on a 60k mile Evo.

a lot of evo guys do. i probably wouldnt but you never know. its nice to start over completely clean. 115k on tylers fyi not 60k

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

A lot of Evo guys get suckered into buying an oil pan they don't need to buy. Unless the motor spun a bearing I see no reason to buy a new oil pan.

Kracka 01-25-2013 10:20 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

I wouldn't call it suckered. When you're building a $5k setup I would consider ~$175 as cheap insurance if there's a risk there may be contaminants trapped in the old one. Do it once, do it right. Now if the previous engine is still running perfectly and shows no signs of oil contamination then I agree, don't bother with a new pan. Same with the oil cooler.

4seasons69 01-25-2013 10:21 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Heck my engine basically ate itself and I didn't get a new oil pan. I went off of the discretion of map and their engine builder. I said if they thought it was best to replace it then replace it. They said I should be fine so I reused it. Mine is a talon though so I don't know how the pans differ.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Evo's have more baffles, and tend to trap metal shavings a lot more.

Gotcha! That makes sense then especially if there is any contamination

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Sorry all have been super busy and phone boke just said f it bought a note 2 laat night.

Leak down wasnt good had a good amount of leak in rings on low cylinder and mechanic said the ex valves were leaking minimally. I dont remember exact numbers. Just that he saod yeah id just drive it till she starts missing and rebuild it.

scheides 02-02-2013 10:31 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

So, when doing shit like this taking note of the *actual* numbers is really important. Up to you if you want to rebuild it but I'd start thinking about it sooner than later before you break something else.

goodhart 02-02-2013 10:42 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

^truf. Fixing something broken costs way more

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Yeah I could haha. Actually have been driving it a lot lately but that's because she's been taking the evo almost every day!

On topic what does everyone think of this?

http://www.amsperformance.com/cart/A...build-Kit.html

Plus a basic head job. Would definitely be in my budget and could just pay cash for it.

Kracka 02-05-2013 07:43 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

I'm sure MAP could put the same package together for cheaper. AMS isn't exactly known for being low-priced. Just keep in mind, as I've mentioned before, you'll be responsible for the labor and give up any warranty with this DIY kit. If you're confident in your engine building ability then go for it.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

well i found a complete 2.3 longblock for sale, with paper work warranty etc from a shop in GA, BUT its a evo 8 motor. What would I need to do to keep mivec? I could always just sell the built head and slap my mivec head on but id like to keep the built one and also since I am worried the head on my car may be the problem. Could I tap into it and put the mivec lines on it? Is that something map could do for me?

edit: just called map out of curiosity. He said I could Use my mivec head, take the springs valves retainers out of the build 8 head BUT i would have to keep my mivec cams (fine by me) the only thing I wouldnt be able to use is the actual evo viii head which is ported and such. But still sweet I could just swap all the parts into my 9 head

evotuner 02-07-2013 11:12 PM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

You could always sell yours if you get it!!

Kracka 02-08-2013 07:25 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

If you want to buy a already built used engine a friend of mine down here is selling the built 2.4L out of his IX (w/Mivec). PM me if you want more info and I'll get it to you.

C3L1CA 02-08-2013 08:06 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

I'd be leary of spending money on that built motor and time to swap out parts only to put a questionable head on it.

Either way good luck with whatever you decide!

goodhart 02-08-2013 09:27 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

I'd go with the TX motor if that is the route you choose.

Kracka 02-08-2013 11:41 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Here is what I got from him:
Quote:

Definitely willing to ship if he's willing to pay for freight.

I don't like the idea of trading/buying a motor I've never seen. I'd rather sell it straight up. EvoD has a perfect IX block in their shop for sale I'll probably buy.

I'd ask $4800 plus freight. This is without cams, but with everything else in the head/block from oil pan to valve cover. Here's a list:

17k miles at 556/546 on Kan's mustang, no drag strips, no auto-x, no road courses, strictly daily driven, zero oil leaks
MAP Stage 2 block - KevinD built
Stock Crankshaft
Wiseco 1400HD Pistons - 10.5:1
Manley I-Beam Conn Rods
Full ACL bearings
ARP Studs
Buschur Baffled Oil Pan
BSE Kit
New (when built) OEM Water Pump/Oil Pump
MAP Stage 3 head porting
GSC Ti Retainers and beehive springs
AEM Cam Gear (Exhaust)
Modified Mivec Gear (per Aaron at English Racing)
AMS Headgasket
Stock Ignition

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Definitely interested!! Can you have him text me 507 313 4592 thats cheaper than the 2.3 evo viii motor I was looking at.

Kracka 02-08-2013 11:55 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

I asked his permission to pass along his phone number to you, once he says OK I'll give it to you.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

4800? cant you get that brand new? plus check awd motorsports in florida theyre selling brand new heads for 1850 or b/o. I think all you need is valve springs and cams. fully built block and head can be had for that price all day i think

tmosser 02-09-2013 01:48 AM

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions
