I totally agree. Saturday I feel I did well, 2nd in class out of 4, but Sunday was a total facepalm moment, I couldn't drive well at all.

You had me thinking about it but, if I'm getting sticky tires, they need to be BIG (275 or wider).

That's what is holding me back as well, 275s on an 8.5" wheel is pushing it.

I'm not a fan of the buldging side wall deal. I'm hopeing to get some 17x10's but we'll see what the $$ says. It will end up being $2K+ on wheels and tires but so much faster.

Cornering speed is over rated.

Cornering speed? I wanted more tracion so I could put the mAd PoWeZ of the 6G72 to the ground! :seeya: I think I'm going to need stiffer springs though... Dam it time to put the 93 together and run XP. If only I could afford it.

Re: The Great Autocross Mega Thread!

Well, there is a thread on EvoM about an Evo 8 that is running in F Prepared, it's pretty wicked and was under weight when it hit the scales. Gut the car, add suspension, big wheels and tires, use lightweight parts and you're golden.

Last event of the season done and over. Now I have no idea on how I'm getting my driving fix for the next 6 months.

I had a kick ass time though, fastest car on street tires, 9th in raw time!

Nice.
I am gonna spend winter getting ready to do auto-x.
My little brother, not LB, got an '03 miata and I told him about doing auto-x and he is excited.

What a great end to a great season. Lots of new friends and faces, learned a lot about the car and driving. Met a lot of my personal goals for the year, time to kick it up a notch for 2009. Now it's 3 months to the awards banquet, then 3-4 months till the first events of the year.

No way, the car and driver will not be nationally competitive. SCCA Tour in Milwaukee or Kansas City? Maybe. But I definitely want to hit up a regular event or two in Milwaukee, Waterloo, Des Moines and/or Omaha.

With any luck next year the car will have some nice light 17x9 or 18x9 wheels with 275-wide sticky tires, the front swaybar installed, maybe some suspension bushings and more power. Given that, it will be extremely competitive locally in BSP (I'm sick of 2nd and 3rd place to M3s and a 350Z) and if I stop being an idiot on the early runs it could easily be a top-10 PAX contender, or at least I can hope. I have a good thing going on locally so I want to stick with it.

Lots of awesome information there even if you don't autocross.

I said this in another thread but I got to go out to mowag 8 and I had the best time... Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Had some instructors with me as well and they were more than a ton of help. I plan to get the car as close to ready as I can by the first race next year, But I will run stock if I had to. Cant wait for next year and the chance to get to know some more mitsu guys, I would like to see more 3g's trying this but we are NOT very competitive ..lol But its a great time ....... Cant wait !!!!!!!!!!!

Re: The Great Autocross Mega Thread!

Take everything you read with a grain of salt. Some of his info is very accurate, other stuff is some personal experience. Keep in mind Dennis was never a repeat champion...

As for next season, once I have the cash, I plan on buying the coilovers from Chris, getting a set of Dunlops and running the season in STU (unless a promotion warrants new 18x9.5 wheels and Hoosiers). Now I just need to pay off the other bills!

Awesome! Intermediate driving school for me! I think this schedule just set the spring cruise date :)

I urge everyone who has never autocrossed but has even the slightest interest in trying it to sign up for the novice school. I learned a lot and it was a great intro to the sport in a very comfortable setting. I know my dad will be doing this with his GTO and hopefully Janelle in her WRX too.

Re: The Great Autocross Mega Thread!

I'm going to try to get my dad to the Novice School as well. He needs to actually do something with that Miata of his.

Re: The Great Autocross Mega Thread!

I'm confused, are both April 25-25 novice school days? The description is weird for the 25th. If so I'll probably sign up for one of them that weekend, excited to try this autocross thing out, see if I like it.

Hughes, I know I won't get anything out of the classroom session, so is it worth it for the instructed seat time?

You'd be surprised; keep an open mind. They have a lot of good advice and knowledge. Definitely do the school; I promise you'll be glad you did.

Oh, trust me, my mind is wide open to anything that'll make me faster, but it's just that I know so much theory, and any beginner classroom instruction I've received in the past has involved me sitting there thinking "I know this... that too... old news..."

I'll do it for the seat time and the instruction received there, and if I do learn something new in the classroom, that's great.

SmokingTires 12-24-2008 10:51 AM

Re: The Great Autocross Mega Thread!

Pretty sure the class room section is non-optional. You pay for both days either way. And they tech cars at the classroom section so you have to be there to run.

There's a lot of good info more than just beginner stuff. If you think you only need seat time, go to the test and tunes. Even I plan on having an instructor some of next season. It always helps for someone else to point out what your doing.

cmspaz 12-24-2008 12:16 PM

Re: The Great Autocross Mega Thread!

No, I would definitely go for both days, but the classroom session would not be my reason for going.

Nice, how do we sign up?
Price? Is there limited room? I dont want to sign up and waste a spot.
I want to get my bro out there in his sweet '03 miata, maybe I can use that if my car is still down.
