Re: My Winter Project....
Im in no rush :) The 4th of July is my goal. Could I do it sooner... Sure. But that may require slightly less trips to the intoxication station. I would like to have it out at the track before then but whenever its done it done :)
Dont feel bad about the wall either... My tires are big but steering with the front tires in the air is probably pretty tough :drive: Im sure Ill leave some paint on the walls also sooner or later. |
Re: My Winter Project....
Looking good guys. Very impressive craftsmanship here.
One question, is the girl friend going to get certified to drive it too? |
Re: My Winter Project....
yes
|
Re: My Winter Project....
I got another scale today to see what this thing is starting to weigh.... with the body and frame mounted together and rear suspension / 4 link its a whopping 426 lbs. This thing will be light.
|
Re: My Winter Project....
Lol, swanny. I'm even going to try and race my car this summer. Maybe we can parade up to brainerd sometime.
edit: have you weighed the engine/tranny and glass? or are you using plexiglass? |

Wow, just wow! Damn it, now you are going to get me thinking! Now I may have a project for next winter... |
Re: My Winter Project....
It will have lexan glass... Rules make it 1/8" but I may go thinner on all the rear windows. I wouldnt think the "glass" will weigh more than 30 lbs for all of it.
When I shipped out the engine with tranny, pulleys, alternor, the big ass crate, a few tie straps, etc... it was right in the 425-450 range. Cant remember exactly. The tranny I think will weigh about the same as the stocker so I would guess the new engine, tranny and all hat should be in the 450 range plus 50-75 for the turbo and header. The rear tires and rims are around 50 lbs, the fronts are 25ish so theres another 150 of rims and tires. Then there is all the aluminum interior, the few more bars that need to be ran, front suspension, brakes, steering, etc... My best guess for the weight will be close to 2000 lbs race weight, full gas with me in it suited. Im really not sure though... small things do add up like the chute, halon, seat belt, shifter, etc... |
Re: My Winter Project....
Who's building your engine, EnginTecs?
|
Re: My Winter Project....
I'm just at the first page but DAMN!!!!!!! that is sweet!!!!
Just wondering how did you decide to use your evo instead of a different one and keeping your for a different toy? Looks like you had ALOT of time into it. I'm not hating but just wondering.... I'm guessing money isn't much of a problem for you after seeing this. What are you doing with the 10 PT cage? I say build a GO KART!!!! lol |
Re: My Winter Project....
If I get some extra time and money I will turn the old 10 point into a go kart yes.
I am using my Evo because its mine... I dont have two :) Yes I have lots and lots of time into the car... its something to do. Money isnt a problem... I just dont have too much of it. |
Re: My Winter Project....
I did get the car to sit at ride height. The tires fit on the whole side I prepped but I still need to make a few inches more of clearance just to be sure they wont ever hit. I also need to sooner or later smooth down all the cuts and extra little chunks here and there on the body but its getting closer.
I also finally figured out how to lock in the front end jig to ensure nothing can twist while welding so when I get back in a week or so Ill be finishing the rear end stuff then working on the front until thats done. Not much else on the frame once that stuffs done :) |
Re: My Winter Project....
I assume these cars will be making the journey to Norwalk for the shootout this coming summer?
|

Re: My Winter Project....
Well Vassil got a bunch of pics uploaded to his site of our cars so here is a link to mine with the body sitting on it for the test fit:
http://www.eclipserwd.com/gallery/sh...ry.php/cat/506 Here are some newer pics of the chassis being welded... its sitting upsidedown in these pics and he flipped the pics.. kida tough to make sense of it all but at least its something :) Ill take more pics that make more sense later: http://www.eclipserwd.com/gallery/sh...ry.php/cat/503 And here are some newer pics of his 1G getting all tacked up: http://www.eclipserwd.com/gallery/sh...ry.php/cat/505 Im ordering Buschur's midplate and flexplate tomorrow so I should have an engine / transmission mock up shortly. |
Re: My Winter Project....
Looks great! Cant wait to see it later this week in person.

Re: My Winter Project....
Looks like there was more weight reduction done to the Evo since I last saw it. Looks like you guys are about to turn the corner and see a lot of progress out of the work you've done.
|
Re: My Winter Project....
There is an EVO in those pics? I didn't see one. :P Anyways, that is a freakin hardcore project. Good luck.
|
Re: My Winter Project....
Well yes I finished the front suspension and mocked up the steering. I still need to weld on new ends for the steering and make the column but thats pretty easy.
Today I dropped in the engine and transmission for a test fit... not much room for feet but other than that everything should fit. Even looks like it will clear the hood line (I hope). I gotta cut a little out of the old firewall to bring the engine to the proper height but not much... The engine, tranny, rear end steering and brakes should all be done within the next two weeks. The Chassis might be certified next weekend... depends if they have the cert guys at Rock Balls or not. If they do Ill get mine cert'd there. Ill post up some good pics when I get em. The front end doesnt look all that neat yet. Once the engine and trans get mounted fully it should look more impressive! |
Re: My Winter Project....
|
Re: My Winter Project....
Ill get some cooler pics real soon!
|
Re: My Winter Project....
Those front brakes are tiny. Is that common on a car like this? Obviously you will be using a chute but I would still think bigger brakes would be needed. Those look like rear brakes.
|
Re: My Winter Project....
I love the fucking bird!
How did you get your car to levitate in the rear? Going to be ready for the Rockfalls opener April 15th! |
Re: My Winter Project....
That cars fly, no lie, you know this. Ball'N!
|
Re: My Winter Project....
Keep the stickers and weather stripping on there.
Gotta make sure you don't get wet inside when it rains. |

Re: My Winter Project....
Yes the rear brakes are bigger. The fronts are also designed to be used with the assistance of a parachute also.
And yeah the chassis should be ready next weekend hopefully :) The opener is the 7th I think also get your facts straight! I hope to get it certified when they got the cert dudes there. Saves me some money from paying someone to come down or for me to tow it wherever they are. |
Re: My Winter Project....
I was talking about the Sport compact opener.
Also April 14th is Chassis Cert day... :p Facts! |
Re: My Winter Project....
So I got an extra week for the chassis cert... I should be there for sure with the chassis by then.
I also got the chute in the mail today so that should be all set up along with the engine and tranny mounts very shortly. Im hoping it doesnt take Strange too long to build the rear end for me though. Getting closer.... |
Re: My Winter Project....

Good luck on the chassis certification. I'm sure you'll get the golden ticket. |
Re: My Winter Project....
:) I followed everything to a T so it should pass with flying colors.
Other good news is the hood clears the engine :) Wont need to cut that at all. I also did get the chute and everything mocked up and it will be mounted today. The front end is completely done now as well. The engine mounts wont be tough to make and the steering column, brake componants and all the pedals should be here early next week. Ill post some pics with the engine tucked in there. Looks kinda cool. |
Re: My Winter Project....
I've seen. Good progress.
|
Re: My Winter Project....
Figured this needed some newer pics:

Also gonna work on the tabs to mount the aluminum and parachute handle and cable. Still waiting for my brake stuff, pedals and steering column though. I hope they get here this week. |
Re: My Winter Project....
nice!!! what tranny? the sticker says shep but I doubt that!
This is very motivating!!! Seeing you take this all on with only 9 bucks an hour shows that normal people can do something like this! Thanks!!! Stuart |
