Re: Project: XP Stealth
So as an update to this thread, I ended up AX'ing in other peoples cars for most of the year. I ended 1st in the MET Counsel series and 2nd in the MOWOG series. My car contributed very little in this, one or two points scores of four or five.
So the "big" mod for next year is going to be gearing. My current gearing (for AX purposes) is the tallest of the factory configurations. That being 46 and 81 MPH for 1st and 2nd gear. The new configuration will be the shortest possible gearing, using factory parts (in non-factory applications) resulting in 38/68 MPH. Much more usable gearing, maybe just a little short but time will tell. AFAIK my car will be the second in the world to have this gearing configuration. Mostly just a blaaa update. |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Sounds like conquest gearing, lol.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
So what max RPM are those gearings at? How do you go about getting those different gears, are you just changing 1/2, or all the gears?
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
I'd imagine he's changing the final drive.
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
That's running 7700 RPM. I am just changing the final drives, so all the gears will be shorter. Bye bye 200mph gearing, I will miss the low RPM highway cruzing as well.

Nice.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
I know this is now an Evo site, but I'd like to know. Which diff sets are these?

Re: Project: XP Stealth
Ryan can chime in if I get this wrong. You put the front ring and pinion from a 6 speed into the 5 speed tranny, then use a 6 speed transfer case. This stuff is not a direct swap but some minor fabrication and spacing should make his car a little more cone dodging friendly.

I also have the option to use the USDM 6speed front ring an pinion, but I would need to use the USDM 6 speed rear diff with it as well. That would give me gearing just slightly shorter than a US spec 6 speed. |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
I wanna see this thing in action again next year.
One bad ass car! |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
:). I can't wait!

Re: Project: XP Stealth
So, I got un-lazy today and pulled the trans out. I have acquired the slightly hard to find JDM 6 speed front ring and pinion, and a 6 speed transfer case. Now I need to make them fit my 5 speed trans. I still need to get the front piece of a 6 speed drive shaft, but that's for later.

Sweet!

Re: Project: XP Stealth
OK, I've made a bit of progress on this.
The spacer for the front ring gear has been made and is in place. The bell-housing and T-case have been clearanced to get them to fit up. And the extra material has been welded in for moving the two bolt holes. I need to flatten those two areas out and then drill and tap. After that the gearing project is done. Most of the credit goes to John on this. I have also picked up a new Kirkey race seat and an FPR. I'm not sure when the FPR will get installed, but now I have it. |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
No shout out/pics... More cone dodging grip before more OMG hp/Tq is made.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
Kirkey's ftw!
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Too bad this car isn't a foot or two narrower as to help reduce the cone carnage. Sure makes me want to get some R-compounds to further dominate Street Modified, though.
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
OK, a little more progress. I drilled and taped the new holes to bolt the t-case to today. So now it's basically just re-assembly and a few other "simple" mods. Simple is easy to say when you have help from John though.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
Ok, the gearing modification is almost done! All I need to do is put the trans back in the car. As far as I know this will be the second 3S to have this modification done to it. So here are some pics of the work:
Pics: 5 speed trans, 6 speed T-case. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/PICT2205.JPG A bit of grinding on the 6 speed t-case, makes for less grinding on the transmission. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/PICT2204.JPG A nice close fit http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/PICT2209.JPG Not particularly useful with out before and after pics, but shows the contour that is need to fit the 6 speed t-case on the 5speed trans. Stock the webs are close to flat between the top and bottom. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/PICT2198.JPG http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/PICT2200.JPG A sharp eye will notice the top left and bottom center bolt holes have weld around them. Material has been added and the holes moved about 1/4 to 3/8" to properly line up with the 6 speed transfer case. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/PICT2201.JPG That stuff, along with a new front ring and pinion, a spacer and a slightly longer drive shaft and the you have the shortest possible gearing for a 3S. If you are wondering why all this is necessary, it's because the 5 speed and 6 speed t-case's have significantly different ratios. The rear diff ratio and t-case ratio need to work out to be the same as the front ratio. And as mentioned earlier, there is no alternate gearing available for the 5 speed. I could have swapped in a 6 speed, but they come with their own set of problems, like $$$ and they are a little weaker. Other mods started over the winter and to be finished are a nice new Kirkey seat, 5 point harness and a couple of mufflers to be installed. A big thanks to John for all the help! |
