I agree that it'd save a lot of time to not bother installing the stock turbo but that means I have to do the work in a place where the car can sit for a few weeks or whatever. I might broach the topic with Shawn...not sure if it's feasible to do it out in one of their pole barns or not. Quote:

Sold the red for 1300 and the upgrade for the Black should be 1000 so i made 300 :) Which is basically what I probably would've had to sell the stock one at. So basically a straight trade for the Black. I did lose out on the porting and coating though. But can't win em all. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
I 100% understand. Chad is pretty understanding too, maybe he has a way to make it work out for all of us.

Re: Evo X upgrades
meh, enough of that. I can't wait to post some pics of the surge tank setup! Definitely swinging by FB after work, whether they call me or not.

Re: Evo X upgrades
Surge tank ftw! Full Blown did a great job on this. They also cut me a really good deal in light of the challenges I've had. Much appreciated!
They recommended that I continue to run the double pumps into the surge tank and the Bosch 044 to the motor. They wired the Bosch as always on so the motor is getting a lot more fuel than it use to. I took it on an aggressive test drive and it worked perfectly. I had a fairly impressive part-throttle backfire once but that's to be expected with it being rich at lower rpms. The setup could always be re-wired so that the Bosch is variable if it proves too difficult to tune for whatever reason. http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/a...10/wiring1.jpg http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/a...10/wiring2.jpg http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/a.../surgetank.jpg http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/a...0/bosch044.jpg http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/a...010/hanger.jpg |

Wahoo! Congrats man!!!

Re: Evo X upgrades
Wow, two Walbro's and an 044, that mother should move some fuel!! lol

^This.
Good luck man. I hope this works for u |

I agree, i doubt you need the 2nd one, but its in there, so whatever :)
Now you just need an intake! |

Re: Evo X upgrades
Lomker, sell your twin-pump setup to someone plus their stock hanger, recoup some of that lost $$ man!

I need to have the fuel trims checked and that takes some time given Shane's schedule. If the car could stay in once piece long enough for one track day this Summer then that'd be nice. |

Then have primo make it look good. You will have some wait time i am sure until shane can fit you in anyway. Intake time :) |

I already have a tubular for a stock-frame turbo plus I'm going to have a custom intake made. |

Re: Evo X upgrades
Okee dokee! Well wire in that wideband to the ecu while you're digging down there, that config file has logging setup for it :D
Excited this thing is so close! Man you must be ecstatic! |

Although it hasn't made much progress either... |

mlomker, Saturday, lets get that wideband on and log this thing. MOD day is almost here! |

Back on topic. mlomker, can wait to see the setup, are you planning on putting all the plastic back on and such or it is not possible with the new setup? |

Re: Evo X upgrades
The last two hours were 'interesting'. I stopped at O'Reillys after work to pick up some hose for installing an afpr.
I went out to start the car and it was a no go. I try to do a bit of troubleshooting but being alone and without tools, it wasn't too easy. I called Full Blown and got the name of their preferred towing outfit. One interesting thing about the Eagan (Yankee Doodle & 35E) O'Reillys is that the parking spots are kind of on a hill. Not as steep as having the front end on ramps but fairly steep. I'd thought about letting the thing roll down to a flat spot to give it a try but waited for the tow truck since I didn't want to obstruct the parking lot if it didn't start. Sure enough, it started on the level. Now what? A surge tank setup that won't start if the car isn't level doesn't compute. I'll call them tomorrow and see if they have any ideas. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
My car did that too back in the day when it ran. I had to have my roommate bring a 5 gal jug to help me start it. Started great when i got more fuel in there.
Did you have a low tank of fuel? |
Re: Evo X upgrades

The only thing that comes to mind is some air in the system/tank. I'm going to run it past FB before I do anything but removing one of the lines on the top and filling the tank to the top once is the only thing that I can think to try. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Very true, right, lol.
Something must be a little goofy. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Weird!

Re: Evo X upgrades
Hopefully they can fix this issue too :(

Re: Evo X upgrades
Here is a thought, and this is just a theory, it is possible you flooded the engine on a warm restart? If you let it sit for awhile (20 minutes or so) that would give enough time to clear the engine of fuel and possibly explain why it started.
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
Shawn, I had considered that and plan to re-test by visiting O'Reillys today. I had been trying it every twenty minutes or so.
Right now my assumption is that the hanger needs to be pulled and modified so it doesn't have slits in it that allow the fuel to get away from the pumps. My theory is that the in-tank pumps were dry despite having 3/4 of a tank, due to the grade of the parking spot. The obvious problem is that you do have to park on hills once in a while, in real life. --- I did discover this morning that the Bosch is over-running the stock fpr. It's around 57psi at idle, which is way too much. Two possible solutions: 1) Rewire pumps so that the Bosch is powered from the car's relay and the in-tank is always on using the add-on relay. I know that MDR suggests this as an optional wiring approach in their surge tank instructions. I'm not sure if it'd be enough to make the stock fpr happy but it'd lighten the load. 2) Install the afpr. I appear to have everything that I need other than a bracket to mount it to the front of the motor. I can either McGuyver something or wait and see if Full Blown can fabricate something decent next week. Right now I'm leaning toward rewiring it tomorrow...that way I can just go bonkers with wiring, both that and the gauges. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Ask MAP if they will sell you the bracket they made for my car. They made a AFPR kit off for my car and sell it on their site. I bet they would give you the bracket.
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
When it get into that state, did you try holding it WOT for a few seconds while turning it over? Sometime that will clear a flooded engine as well. (again on operating on the assumption it was flooded)
I like your idea better though, I will be sure to bring along my soldering station for you to do your rewiring. :) |

Re: Evo X upgrades
Maybe TOO MUCH fuel for a warm start is your problem?
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
This is what I was thinking as well, but that wouldn't explain why it wouldn't start on an incline.
