Nitrous expansion plate ftw!

I'd actually put a nice hole in my radiator, it's in the front :D

Very awesome! The Rev3 did good things on my IX, and I know my basic ported IM/TB combo showed great gains on my X!

The stock X TB is smaller than the stock IX TB, it is the smallest diameter opening of the entire intake track between the turbo outlet and intake manifold inlet.

You saw the results my friend gained by just adding the ported TB to his MR-T w/Green I think.

Most of the time a nitrous backfire will blow up an intake manifold anyway....

Chris,

Are you using a software like Virtual Dyno? You should look into something like that as you seem to make parts changes a lot and it can get expensive running to the dyno all the time (plus I know you street tune).

Oh I am not saying there aren't gains, its just a lot of people with bigger turbos haven't posted a ton of info on them yet.

AMS has said before they think the intake mani is very good factory and isn't worth upgrading. However, I doubt there is no room for improvement.

Post up a before/after in Virtual Dyno Scheides, when you get AFR's in line!

scheides 10-05-2011 12:08 PM

Re: beaterX project thread

Added about .8AFR to my fuel maps this morning and the car no longer knocks at all. Runs solid like it should and the car feels great all over, but no amazing change from my butt dyno.

However....and this is FAR FROM PERFECT but if the numbers indicate gains across the board:
http://scheides.com/misc/pics/evox/o...map-rev3im.jpg

Also I now have a set of FIC 2150cc injectors...trying on if I want to install them and sell my 1680's or just sell them. Either way the money will go towards the new walbro DW400 fuel pump setup and a mil.spec 64mm TB....maybe by xmas? :P

Murlo26 10-05-2011 12:14 PM

Re: beaterX project thread

Hmmm, I might want one of the sets of injectors that you don't end up using.

Preferably the 2150's but who knows. PM me down the road when you decide and we can talk.

Gains look solid, fatter midrange ftw!Tough to tell on virtual dyno sometimes though.

that mil-spec 64mm is the hotness too btw, I like that you are maxing the setup out!

EDIT:

Also you should be able to grab my AMS intake shield sometime soon, next few weeks so you can test it out and copy it if need be.

Nice! I'm in no rush. Car runs great with my silly exhaust manifold heat shield :D I def want to give it a try though!

ino right! Driving the car around a little more & not concentrating on fueling it definitely feels better everywhere. It's not nearly as dramatic as when I swapped in MAP's long-runner tubular manifold, but I can feel it down low and there is a little bit more yanking of the neck up top. The powerband on these 4b11's is so smooth it's hard to really say it feels faster.

Re: beaterX project thread

Car rolled over 38000 miles as I pulled into the garage last night--this marks 10,000 miles on the motor since I got it running last fall. What an epic year it has been! The car is making fantastic power and I couldn't be happier with the drivability and day-to-day civility. The car runs perfect and last weekend Andrew complimented me on how clean the car runs under boost--no puffs of smoke, no drops of oil flying out, etc.

Today I decided to give it a health check. Engine was up to full temp but oil temps were probably not too hot as I only drove over to the dog park and back.

Compression test:
145 147 138 127
147 149 139 130 (retest)

This spring I had tested it out at 145-151-146-145 so I'm not sure what to think.

Next I yanked the valve cover off and check the clearances on all of the cam buckets. All are within spec except intake cam lobe #3 (cyl 2, intake valve #1) which is .012/.013, this hasn't changed since I checked it at 1000 miles.

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/photo_001.sized.jpg

Checked timing chain stretch, it's well within spec.

Spark plugs look ok, probably will replace them next spring.

Boost leak test and oil change are on my todo list, maybe next weekend. About time to order snow tires to I guess :P

Re: beaterX project thread

I couldn't bring myself to spend $1200 on another set of Dunlop WinterSport 3D's...even though on the X the car surpassed any other AWD car I've driven in the snow. Lots of local guys have had great luck with the Hankook W300's and these are the next-generation: I'm going to try my hand at a new tire that I haven't heard much about: Hankook W310 i-cept evo.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Z...512/11%2B-%2B1

I weighed them against the Dunlop Wintersport M3's and the w300's and had to play around with sizing to find different tires that would fit and not kill my wallet. In the end I got 235/40-18. Stock is 245/40-18.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-y...512/11%2B-%2B2

$796 shipped from discounttiredirect.com, best deal I could find on 18" snow tires that fit on the stock X rims.

Re: beaterX project thread

Skinnier tires are better in the snow anyway. That's cool.

The tires are called evo they belong on your car!

Re: beaterX project thread

Nice pick up! The Dunlops easily made my X the most enjoyable best snow handling vehicle I ever drove but yes they are stupid expensive.

I am sure these will work well too. Let us know how they compare!

Re: beaterX project thread

Ok snow tires are still sitting at the ready...in the meantime I ordered the aluminum undertray from SSP in South Dakota...man this thing fits REALLY nice. My front bumper was flimsy and kickable, it is missing chunks out of it (see thread title!) and I just realized that I might be missing the lower wheel liner on the driver's side. In fact I'm sure of it, just never thought about it!

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/...tray.sized.jpg

Install took about an hour, including jacking and lowering the car and *sniff* firing up the torpedo heater for the first time this season.
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/...ray1.sized.jpg

Every hole lined up perfectly. You can see the access panels for the oil drain and filter.
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/...ray2.sized.jpg

Lots of unused mounting points along the sides, probably hs something to do with the missing wheel liner piece I guess :P Still fits awesome. My bumper cover is much more sturdy, this will be VERY helpful once the snow flies :D

Re: beaterX project thread

I am so tempted to get this as well, but for that price there are so many other things I need first. It really does look good.

Ps. Remind me in the next few weeks to pull off my intake shield for you Scheides, assuming you still want to test with it.

I do I do! Thank you! I figured I'd bug ya once the snow was flyin.

scheides 11-13-2011 10:25 PM

Re: beaterX project thread

So when I ordered the undertray I also decided to finally finish off the power setup on the car--this is the mil.spec 64mm throttle body. Everything stock has been replaced or ported now!

Stock TB is 60mm, this one measures just a hair under 64mm on my calipers on the IM side:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/milspecTB.sized.jpg

Only problem is, the inlet on my MAP Rev3 manifold was 61.5mm
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evox-...0229.sized.jpg

After talking to a few people at MAP it seems as though you need to specify what size inlet you'd like when ordering...I picked up this manifold second hand so I'm stuck with what it had on it. Sure it's not *that* far off but heck, if you're going to do something, do it right eh? Off came the IM again, and out came the porting bits...
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/IMG_0274.sized.jpg

After a quick boost leak test and she was back on the road. Idle is the same. Low-speed driveability is the same. Light boost and part throttle the car seems a little more snappy, which is really just what I wanted! WOT...um, WOW. The car is now another notch towards retarded...or redonk...or whatever. All I know is the difference is insane.

How can this much difference be had with just a TB swap? I am seriously in awe, this must have unlocked some of the potential of the fancy-dancy Rev3 IM and let the rest of the engine flow more. I was hoping to see some good basic improvement but yea....this mod is WAY worth it and I'm WAY happy.

Car is definitely going to need more fuel pump here soon.

Also, something not so happy I discovered with the IM off....gunk all over the backside of the intake valves:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/IMG_0276.sized.jpg

Time for some MCCC, prolly next oil change.

el-oh-el-- I ordered some vinyl baseboard molding from mcmaster.com for $3, and while the car was in the air today to swap on the stock rims/snow tires I made a template with some cardboard and slapped this thing in to fill the hole where the front lip is broken. A new lip is $250 so this will get me by till I spring for one :P

Have you ever logged mivec at idle? Target vs. Actual? I got a call from John from Akuma motorsports today about his mivec going all the way to -35 at idle and was curious if you were seeing this at all. I don't think I am but not sure really and I can't test it on my car.

In a way smoother yes. I guess some people have had oil pressure issues at idle, or what they think are oil pressure issues. Apparently below like 1200rpms the car goes all the way negative on the exhaust cam and all hell breaks loose. Just curious if you have had any issues.

scheides 12-07-2011 12:36 PM

Re: beaterX project thread

Heh, I'll look. My idle is rock solid, probably around 700 or 800 rpm. I've been having some surge issues with the new TB but it's only when the car is moving, it's weird.

Murlo26 12-07-2011 01:32 PM

Re: beaterX project thread

Strange about the surge...hmmm. Leak maybe?

Yea I guess if you get a chance just let me know, just curious.

I should log mine for a while. At idle it is good when cold, but once the car is warmed up, it gets really choppy and AFR's jump to 15-16+. Eventually it will even itself out and it will idle smooth until it dips down low again. Unfortuantely, I don't know a ton about the tuning, reading of the tables.

Re: beaterX project thread

xmas update.

Installed some weatherTech floor mats this weekend:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/floormats.sized.jpg

These things are really nice! They fit like a glove and are already nice and dirty from use :)

Speaking of dirty, I found this on my intake ports/valves when I had the IM off recently:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evoX/IMG_0276.sized.jpg

After a bunch of research, I've taken the advice of aaron @ ER and Shane @ DB and just switched back to pump gas for a few tanks. I added a bottle of chevron fuel injector cleaner to the first tank, hopefully this cleans things up! Switching back to pump was dead easy on my setup: turn down MBC 3 full turns while filling the car up with BP93, fire it up on the e70 lingering in the lines and then hold down cruise control button after about 20 seconds. Car runs mid 11's AFRs and boost just touches 24psi in 2nd and 3rd, 25.5 in 4th. WGDC is set to zero across teh board so this is pure mbc, taper and all. Not ideal but the car still rips pretty good!

The car had a handful of CELs that would come and go but the last month the CEL has been on solid. po300 (random misfire), po365 (exhaust CAS), and p3000 error. po300 and p3000 are now gone after 1 tank, and I discovered that my exhaust CAS plug was loose--it had slightly melted from the tubular manifold before I put a heat shield and heat wrap tape (thanks again lomker! RIP!) over it. The pin was also bent really bad from when I was swapping manifolds on the dyno back in feb so idk, maybe the sensor is bad, maybe it just needs more TLC. I've seen people reporting po365s as a result of a misfire so I'll fiddle with the plug some more and probably try some new plugs after the holidays and see if that helps at all.

goodhart 12-19-2011 11:07 PM

Re: beaterX project thread

is there any patches to disable the p0300 and others like there is for the 8/9? My car would get that all the time before I disabled it, even with a good tune and no noticeable misfire.

scheides 12-19-2011 11:24 PM

Re: beaterX project thread

I'm not sure, it seems to have gone away though...and considering the other CEL, I might want to know when it's actually doing this...I had zero CELs all summer so this is def an indication of some issues. Nothing major though.
