Looks good JET, congrats on getting it running!
|
Congrats, we're lining them up at the shootout right? ;)
|
I am game! MN should have a hell of a showing at the SO!!
I am showing some low oil pressure on my car. I think it is just the way I have the gauge set up though. I am going to switch it back more towards normal tomorrow and see if it is any better. The 2900 is a little stiffer than a 2600, but still not terrible. It doesn't seem to be as grabby as a 2600 either. |
Damn I need to fix my car just to go there damn it. My lifetime goal right now is just to drive my car full throught the gears all the way down the track. If I pull a high 12, a low 14 or a high 16, either way it would be somewhere to start with!
|
I have a new front case coming for my car with the latest and greatest oil pump gears. Hopefully that will solve the low oil pressure issue. It damn well better anyway!
I had reused the front case from my 2.0 (max of 87k on it). I wouldn't think the crank walk would have hurt it, but who knows. The damn things are spendy though, $256 with 2 gaskets! I will also be dyno'ing Friday at 3pm. Does anyone have a video camera and want to come watch? |
well I can watch I suppose. I know of a few people that have video cameras, Ryan and Brian, Ither one could show up or let you use the camera.

Does your Intake Pipe hit the shifter? or did you get it to clear?
Also did you get the CF hood on there or just the stock one for now? (picts picts) I really think you should have taken some picts with the intake pipe 90 degreed out the hood that was funny. (but might actually have worked like a ram air system since it put the K&N Filter STraight into on comeing Air. :3gears: |
Yep, I modified the 45 bend and just used one flange. It sits in there really nice now. I did notice that the lower radiator hose is hitting the shifter for 1st and 2nd though. I will have to shorten the hose a tad to get it out of the way. I still have the stock hood on for now. I should be switched over by the SO I think.

Well I went to the dyno today.
I'll just say that my car went up in flames on the dyno. :( :fworld: Hopefully it isn't anything too serious, the head gasket had a catastrophic failure due to boost creep. It went from 20 psi to 28.2 psi in .7 seconds at 6k rpm. There was no knock, but the AFR's did go lean right at the very end. I will be pulling the head Mon at the latest or whenever I can find a 2.4l head gasket. I may try a stocker, but I really don't want to. I did make 353 whp and 321 torque. The torque was flat from 4k to 6.2k, partly due to boost creep. It started at 17 psi to 5k, then up to 20, then it went balistic from 6k to 6.2k. So, the lesson for the day is twofold. Do your first dyno on C-16 for safety's sake and a stock PTE housing won't flow enough out the wastegate with a 2.4 and a larger turbo. |

i know this is the least of your problems...but just thought ide throw it out there Adam |
sorry to hear that man, that's a total buzz killer.
|
I am pretty sure it is just the head gasket. It didn't get lean until the boost creeped so bad that the boost comp table in the AEM couldn't keep up to add more gas. The AFR was good for all but the very end, and for a split second it went to 13.8-1. But the car didn't hardly knock at all. Not enough to cause that kind of blow out you wouldn't think but something happened in there. We won't know until we pull the head off and see what happened.
CRAIG |
That is sad to hear, hopefully there is nothing major wrong and a HG is all thats needed. What type was on there?
|
Cometic HP.

i know this is the least of your problems...but just thought ide throw it out there Adam [/b][/quote] I had to bend my water pipe back to clear the turbo. That is what caused it to get closer. And the fluidyne radiator is also thicker. I cut off 1 1/2" and all is good now. |
Well, none of us know exactly what happened, but the melt down was more severe than we were hoping for. The car never went lean except for the very end of the run (like .2 seconds), but something was definately off. I am thinking there must have been a value in the AEM that was setup different between mine and Mo's ECU.
I melted some good sized channels into the head, matching ones through the head gasket and melted the sides of the pistons a bit. The head looks fixable (you will be seeing it sometime Mike) but she needs new pistons and probably bearings too. I am thinking it had to be something with timing to do it, but I am still unsure. I will post up pic's tonight. |
OH damn dude, that's horrible news, especially with the shootout right around the corner. If I were rich I'd buy ya some new pistons, but I'm in the military, I can barley afford converse shoes.
|
That definately sucks to hear JET. If there is anything we can do, let me know.
|
Damn,
Sorry to hear that Jet, was hoping it was just the head gasket also. Hopefully all goes well with the rebuild. Think you're still going to make the shoot out this weekend. Or is that basically a wash? Hopefully it'll rain here on the 14th and then I'm sure you won't feel so bad if you stay home. ;) |
I think I am heading up to BIR for the weekend instead. Maybe I will run into Jim, Mike and Swanny while I am up there :D
|
Why what are they doing up there? What new project they got going on?
|
just watching some faster cars run :)...maybe jack a few ideas :).
Actually its a weekend to get away from it all... |
Yeah, my car isn't going to be done for the SO and I really want to use my days off to complete it. I'll work on the car Thursday and Friday and head to BIR for Friday night Saturday and Sunday. I have never seen or felt a top fuel dragster run down the track, so I am pretty pumped to see them. I'll save some money this weekend too and put it into the Talon.
I may go to the Grove Creek drag strip before heading up to Brainerd Friday night if I get the talon done in time. Jim |
Well, I was thinking it through and I might give it one more shot to get it running this year. I am going to get some new pistons, hone the cylinders, check the bearings and rods, have Mike weld the head and mill it down myself and clean up the welds.
It shouldn't be too bad, depending on the wait for pistons. It should be ~$600. |
Well best of luck. - you and i both seem to be in simular situations.
Both looking at possibly being out for the rest of the year. - hopefully the oil pump swap will solve my problem. Otherwise She's off to the Jackstands till next spring. (at least I got 2 weeks of use out of my $3000 spent on it this year) :headache: And got to feel the 456.7whp for a total of 4 days of running around. (which is probably the reason I'm not thinking about parting it out... loved how it felt at that level of HP, can't wait to make more :3gears: ) |
Sorry to hear it Jet. Our trailer gang is getting smaller.

Alright, here are some pics of the carnage!!
Notice the huge blow outs in the back of the head gasket. |

The #1 and #4 electrodes were burned off the plugs. That is probably why they didn't detonate as bad and melt through the head like #2 and #3 did. That groove is probably 1/4" deep and 1/2" wide. It didn't hit any passages though, so it should be fixable.
|
is the block damaged? that's gnarly!
|
The block is totally fine. I just need to hone the cylinders as there is a little bit of aluminum build up. You can't see it in the pic's, but the pistons are melted slightly too. I will post up some pic's of them when I get them out.
Thanks to QPR for getting my new pistons so quick!! |
Your welcome JET. Bring the head over whenever you want and I can weld it up for you. It is definately fixable. The last one I welded had cracks way down into the water jacket and that one turned out fine. We can pressure test it after as well to make sure all is good.
|
Wow, thats hardcore for 1 pull!
|
It was actually like four pulls, three to try to set the boost and then the final one. So I am sure that everything was good and heated up when we did the full pull in fourth and thats why it went so quick.
I am guessing that somehow the car was running 30+ degrees of timing. Even though the AEM was set to like 13.6 degrees under full boost. Must have been something in there that got fucked up in the last year when the car was down. Once its back together we are putting V1.1 and then reloading the map and reloading all the sensors and hopefully that will take care of it. CRAIG |
Damn, looks like you're having my kind of luck with new engines.
|
Yeah, I was tring to rush things to get it ready for the SO. Bad idea! I just threw a map in it from someone with a similar car and didn't go through and check everything. I did set the timing and everything, but something was off between his setup and my last years. Some value that doesn't change with maps, must have been off. It made it run too much timing some how and that was the result.
That is why I am gong to start with a clean install this time. I have been with the AEM since version .73, so it is time for a clean install. That is like upgrading windows the whole time from version 3.1!! |
