Getting real tired of posting these types of pictures...

http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...0226171230.jpg

Long story short, we were slowing for a stoplight and the Jeep Cherokee behind us wasn't paying attention and drive right into the back of the Volt. At least I can say he was apologetic and honest, he even admitted to the cop that he wasn't paying attention and it was his fault. This is why people need to keep their phones down while driving!

Oddly enough, one 1 of 4 taillight pieces is cracked and everything still works (brake lights, backup camera, etc.). No airbags deployed and the car is still drivable. As far as I can tell no damage was done to the battery system at all since it still drive fine and took a charge without issue. The quarter panels seem OK as well, as do all 4 door frames. The small glass window shattered but the large hatch glass seems fine, as do the hatch hinges. Very sad for a car in otherwise perfect condition with only 16k miles on it. It's sitting in the garage at the moment, but will be going to the dealer's bodyshop tomorrow. The guy's insurance already got her a rental to drive which was nice. Thank God he has legit insurance (Safeco) and not some rinky-dink legal minimums nonsense.

Of course I had just updated the navigation maps and did some LED interior lighting on hit this weekend!

Buy it back from the insurance company if they total it. I've been watching insurance auctions and golf cart cars sell for peanuts. :D

The thought has definitely already crossed my mind. I could have some Mexicans throw it back together on the cheap and then replace my Cruze with it. Honestly though, I do hope insurance fixes the thing and gets it back on the road since we had her previous Volt totaled out less than a year ago!

Dude, you need some extra protection with all these crazies you attract.

Hope you guys are doing ok, make sure to get checked out after a couple of days.

Time to buy a giant lifted truck with a brush guard and hitch!

Re: Project Gholt: Slower, Heavier, & Quieter

$4,320.91 is the initial estimate from Safeco (his insurance company) with recycled and aftermarket parts. I told the body shop that I only want factory GM parts going on the car, recycled or new, but must be original OEM. I'm sure that will increase the number by a bit, but should still be plenty fixable and not be totaled out!

There is certified aftermarket that is higher quality than certifit haha. "capa" or "platinum plus". Sorta fit is awful.

Re: Project Gholt: Slower, Heavier, & Quieter

Update on this:
The estimate rose to $6,706.80

All the parts arrived 2 Fridays ago while we were out of the country on the cruise ship, it spent last week in the body department, and this week in the paint booth. They're working to make sure all the pearl is properly blended (they're going up to the rear doors) and we should have it back early next week sometime.

I bet your happy that it didn't get totaled.

Sorta fit stuff is total junk. You spend more time trying to make that stuff work then spend a couple bucks more for better quality after market stuff. We get our stuff from the dealer or keystone. We try to get everything from the dealer when we can.

Auto nation bought tousley ford up here. They have been price match our price from keystone. Some of the dealers are trying to crush the aftermarket vendors.

Some of those pearl whites really suck to match, a lot of times you will find 20+ variants of the same color and none are really ever the same. Toyota's blizzard white 3 stage is the worst.

They found one more part needed during final assembly last Thursday and just finally got approval to order it from the guy's insurance company today. Hopefully it's done this week sometime; bodyshops are about to get slammed due to the hail storms that rolled through last night!

Re: Project Gholt: Slower, Heavier, & Quieter

Two months and still don't have the car back. Happy camper I am not! At this point I'm piling as many miles on the 2017 Malibu (really nice car actually) loaner they gave me out of spite (this is the bodyshop's car, no longer the insurance-paid rental).

Re: Project Gholt: Slower, Heavier, & Quieter

Two and a half months and 5 trips to the bodyshop later, we finally have it back, and it looks exactly like a car with 16k miles on it should!

Re: Project Gholt: Slower, Heavier, & Quieter

I gave it the full detailing experience yesterday morning (wash, claybar, and paste wax, among other things) and only found one flaw in the new paint that couldn't be corrected with Meguiar's ScratchX 2.0 and some rubbing; it's a tiny run that looks like got a little too heavy on the pearl down low on the rear driver's side door. Luckily, it's not a big deal and I think anyone else would be hard-pressed to find it unless they really searched hard for something. I of course did find some rock chips I didn't know existed so I'll be ordering a bottle of Dr. ColorChip for this car now too. I would rate the final repair job as a 9.9/10 and am quite happy with how it all turned out. Had they done this quality of work the first time around I would be singing their praises!

I'm taking it in to my tint shop later on this morning to get the new hatch glass done in Llumar 30% ceramic to match the sides, and the windshield with Llumar Air90 like I did on the Vette.

I'm also going around and changing out bulbs with LED's...you know, for energy efficiency ;)

Re: Project Gholt: Slower, Heavier, & Quieter

Trunk and license plate lights have now been converted to Philips LED T10 bulbs...YAY. Same bulbs I used on the 'Vette.

Im enjoying those bulbs as well! Glad you got her back, did you get a paid rental car the whole time you had it in the shop?

Re: Project Gholt: Slower, Heavier, & Quieter

Sure did! 2014 Malibu for half the time from insurance/Enterprise, 2017 Malibu or the other half from the body shop while they were redoing their work.
