I have been half tempted for the past 2 years to sell my x and do this. The only thing holding me back is with my luck I'd blow that up too and end up with another broken evo :) All these peeps joining the 2 evo club! I want in :) |
Re: Project Black ValentNine
I keep seeing decent 03-04s popping up in the $12-14k range and it's tempting me to replace the DD already.

Re: Project Black ValentNine
I 100% disagree with what everyone is saying on a stockish dd. 500whp in an IX is perfectly reliable. If the motor is built, bolt on an ef3.
|
Re: Project Black ValentNine
Agreed.
Cars are reliable as the person doing the work for the most part. 400whp should run all day everyday |

Wish they had an MHI for the 8/9, so perfect for stock motors.

Still though the turbos I mentioned above are fantastic...no need for BB, they are small enough that the lateral loads are low enough that the things will run forever and ever as long as you don't try and run 40psi on them. I ran my BBK at 33psi for idk, 30k miles? I don't remember...then sold it to mrfred and he's put another 30k on it pushing it just as hard. Just keep oil in the thing and be contentious about warm-up/cool-down along with regular boost leak tests and no reason these won't last. Still, I have BeaterX with an EF4 so maybe this car stays STS...time will tell I guess! |
Re: Project Black ValentNine
400whp is reliable(ish) on a stock block but 400tq isnt.
...which it does depend on when that 400tq hits, sub 3800rpms its not as reliable as 4000+rpms |
Re: Project Black ValentNine
I ran around at 514whp/456wtq for a year and a half(~23k miles) with the stock motor/FP Red and it didn't explode.
That was even on my 'I read about it on the internet' tune. With Diiirk's tune from AWD Motorsports it was 439/440 on the stock turbo with boltons and E85-on their dynojet at sea level. I admit, I kind of secretly wish I would have just thrown some drop in pistons/rods in the block and left the car alone. |

Don't believe everything you read on the internet, plus nothing a set of rod bolts won't fix. |

Re: Project Black ValentNine
Why are we discussing how much the stock rods can or cannot take when I already said I'm putting aftermarket rods in this motor?!? You guys just want to kick dead horses eh? :P
The last thing I'll say is the whole '400wtq' thing is semi true, but as always when quoting dyno numbers, it depends on the dyno :) I ran '400wtq' or '450wtq' on my evo8 w/ stock bottom-end for...whatever I said above, 25k miles or so, and '370wtq' or '400wtq' for like 20k miles before that....that is about the limit though, I was happy and things looked just peachy when I pulled it apart...even after rolling through the ditch ;) |

Since you don't believe me ask ron, english racing or any of the other people that actually push stock motors rather than chasing the newest parts on the market. |

Murlo you never fail to provide entertainment.
Back on OT, scheides are you still shopping for a stock motor or just whatever is around for the right price? |
Re: Project Black ValentNine
On page 2. Funny how far it goes off topic On a stock rods when it was all posted it is being built right now at RS. Just need to take the time to read first.
Original block will be line-bored and fully machined I found an OEM 88mm crank locally Molner H-beam rods (good stuff--google them!) Wiseco HD pistons 9:1 Stock IX head w/ stock valves (cleaned, machined as necessary) GSC 5039 valvesprings Stock IX cams Stock IX turbo |
Re: Project Black ValentNine
oh nice.
That is gonna be sweet, this mean the beater X can go T3 or T4!! |

I took one year off and I bought a nice dd and a house. Plus when my DSMs run I was averaging 30k a year multiple track visits and a ton of street racing time. You? Oh you raced a few times at pg. That's cool I guess. How popular are those rods in 4 cyl applications? |

Re: Project Black ValentNine
So for ballers like you and scheides with 2 cars is that like double the anty?
|
Re: Project Black ValentNine
When's it going to be done? Goals with this one?
I agree with Ron too. If the engine is out of the car, then throw rods/pistons in it! I did drop ins back in the day, worked well. |
Re: Project Black ValentNine
Alrighty! We're in the home stretch now!
So, first off, the molnor H-beam rods are out. Backorder, and after staring down the bad-ass Wiseco HD's I was putting in the block I caved. Manley Turbo Tuff I-beams are on their way in. I'm excited to try these, they are pretty bad ass! I've had MAP/Howard X-beams in my X and these things are right on par. SO nice! Transmission. Gah. Way more than I expected. Needed a new 3rd gear synchro and sleeve, 2nd gear sleeve, 5th/reverse sleeve, reverse syncro, and a new reverse gear. On top of that, 4th gear will be swapped out for an evo8 4th so it will be a little taller for street shenans and drag racing. :) I'm excited for a trans that is minty fresh!!! The car already has a short-shifter in it and copper underhood shifterbushings so this should be pretty hawt. Clutch? 6-puck! Ummm yea. Again, I caved. Exedy Twin... http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6397.sized.jpg Back to the block...it was a two week ordeal with the machine shop, I don't even know all what was done but its a miracle...block is trash! block is a-ok! block is trash! block is....wait...yup! Block is a-ok! Crank fits in real nice, rings need to be fitted and...off we go! http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6396.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6394.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6393.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6392.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6391.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6390.sized.jpg I have a box-o-racing goodies ready to go in this thing too, brake ducts, 4-point harness, etc...this is gonna be a fun spring/summer! |
Re: Project Black ValentNine
Nice update! Hopefully I get to see it this summer.
|
Re: Project Black ValentNine
Bummer about the trans... it seemed to shift nice still! :( Glad they saved the block it looks nice a fresh! Cant wait to see you rip in this thing!
|
Re: Project Black ValentNine
Awesome update!
Badass new parts are badass |
Re: Project Black ValentNine
