Looks good! If youre cheap and dont want to buy a plug you could put the tape on the inside and use touch up paint to paint it white. Did that on my 2g and didnt look the best but didnt look horrible

I went with the Home Depot household black plug. Some RTV from the underside and you're all set to go.

FYI your car needs to look as clean under the hood as Leisure's does when you're done with it...

bah, DSMs don't need AC.

Steve, you can have the A/C stuff if you want. I wasn't really expecting to get anything for it, and it fan be used by someone that's cool.

After looking around for different options, this may be the route I go. Looks like the 2g ones are 25mm.

I forgot what I did.
I took a body plug and it fit perfect. that with some weatherstripping adhesive and its perfect.

Shitty weather this weekend, so I just putzed around with my motor mount inserts I got for xmas. Well 3 or them anyways, I didn't want to take the wheel off outside to get the passenger side one off the car. I will do that once weather is nicer outside.

The sawzall made pretty quick work of getting the rubber junk out as well as the metal rings that need to be cut out.

Rear motor mount, rubber cut out:

Got the ring out, ready for paint and insert:
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...44339309_n.jpg

Big giant Drivers' side mount, ring and rubber out, ready to be cut down and finished:

Finished product of all three.

Front:

(This one was a bit of a whore because it isn't two pieces, and it has to be pressed in. I eventually got it with lots of lube (TWSS) and the bench vice.)

I had some days off this week and finally went and picked up my brothers' engine hoist. When I got it back I got it on the stand and started tearing shit apart.

Prepare for carnage!!

Getting the engine from hoist to stand. Didn't really plan this pic at all, and didn't notice till I got some funny faceboook comments. haha 4g63 Allis!

Got the intake manifold off and found this...Where is the rest of the valve? You can just faintly see the cracked valve guide as well. Phone didn't want to focus very well down the runner like that.

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...48169302_n.jpg

Got the junk ass crank pulley and water pump pulley off along with the timing cover. The water pump bolts were just a tiny bit more than finger tight. I'm not sure that has anything to do with the failure though. The timing belt was loose as hell too.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...51480608_n.jpg

Ahh! There's the problem! Think it'll buff out? ;)

This is Cyl #1:

So the head is junk, I figured it would be, so that is not a surprise at all which is why I picked up the 2g head last summer.

On the the pistons.

Nice pile of aluminum shavings there, my guess is that happened when I was turning it over and over while trying to get it running before I discovered the beat up spark plug. What's weird is that the engine didn't make any noises until I cranked it probably 15 times and I stopped and checked the plugs.

That looks awfully familiar! Lol. When mine went it didn't make any noise either. Mine would even fire up and run like crap lol.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

So, after the cruise and my trip to TX I'll be in the market for some 2g pistons on 1g rods. Amazingly enough, the cylinder walls looked damn good. No cross hatching obviously as I'm sure this motor has a million miles on it, it's glazed pretty good. But no major scratches! Nothing I could feel with my fingernails anyways. :) I'm sure I'll be able to check it out better once I get it further apart.

Next time I get up there to work on it I plan on flipping the engine and pulling the oil pan to see how beat up the bearings are. I'm not expecting much, hopefully at least the crank and block are usable though, otherwise it might get expensive quick.

LOL at #1 piston, are you planning to do a 2.0 rebuild or 2.3? Whats the plan for this bish?

Lol idk how many hp ill have. Gonna stick stock appearing for now, maybe like an SCM61 for fwd traction lolz some day. No matter what this combo will hold whatever power I ever give it. More power= more problems :)

Got the pan off and pulled the the #1 piston and rod out.

A lot of sludge in the pan:
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...74388156_n.jpg

Oil pickup was dented to shit and covered in more sludge:
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...39501169_n.jpg

After I took the piston and rod out I got a closer look, and noticed that the cylinder is indeed banged up pretty bad. It will definitely need to be bored now.

Bearing surface:

One deep gouge in the rod bearing, I forgot to get a good look at the crank:

One more carnage pic for good measure :D

That poor car.

How deep are those marks in the cylinder wall? They look pretty gnarly.

But I still don't see the problem with that piston you keep posting up.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Bought another full shortblock for $150 last night. Needs rings the guy said. It came with waterpipe, front case, ofh, etc, so it was a good deal to say the least. Cylinder walls look glazed, but undamaged, rest of the motor looks fine from external inspection. At least it will be a better motor to start with that the old one. Probably get it on the stand and get it torn down in the next few weeks, get it ridge reamed and torque plate honed, and put new bearings and rings in it. Only thing that slows me down is going to TX to visit Kracka for a few days soon (see: hookers and blow), and moving the middle of June. This thing looks to have some sort of hope of running this year though!

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Long time no update. I tried that oil trick in the motor, it dropped about 1/8" in each of the cylinders over a 24hr period. Regardless, I'm going to tear it down and do a stock rebuild.

Piston rings ordered, Chris Carey is supposed to be getting back to me on main and rod bearings here shortly. Still not sure what I will end up going with. Lots of people say the ACL Aluglides work just fine. Then tear down should begin tomorrow. I'm thinking of honing it myself, getting some paint stripper and painting it myself, but bringing it in somewhere to get hot tanked between honing and painting.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

ANYWAYS,

What damn bearings do I buy now? ACL Race? regular ACL's? King? Clevite?

I've always heard good things about the ACL Race, but do I really need them for a stock rebuild? It will see a good bit of abuse eventually, but stock motors handle that just fine too.

CornFed2.4 07-31-2013 05:03 PM

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

What's the price difference? If its a few bucks even if its not get the race ones hands down. There proven to work in our motors.
