What a fuck load of fuck that is.

stroker time.

Re: Chris's Evo

I'm hoping to just throw a balance shaft elimination kit in there and be good.. But idk.. The damage is super minimal as in like 3 or 4 small flakes tops and that's after taking off the oil pan. Mike might chime in with his opinion.

GsXtUrBo98 09-15-2012 12:30 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

I would of course get a new bearing for the bs elimination kit.. I wish I had more then 1 opinion on this.. Kevin is in Chicago at the moment and he rebuilt his motor him self. I also wanted to talk to Alex at MAP to get his opinion on it over the phone since he builds there motors, or at least he built mine for the GSX so it would be a start.

There is VERY minimal play in the rod bearing and I mean side to side not up and down. Believed to be the normal. And with the VERY few flakes found and discoloration I'm hopping that it can be an easy fix.. but who knows

Re: Chris's Evo

If thats the case, you got lucky. Throw new bearings, flush the oil system as best as you can and let her buck.

+1 do it to it. Good luck man!

Re: Chris's Evo

Ya.. Does anyone know if you can do a BS elimination with the motor in the car?

EclipseGST 09-16-2012 01:48 AM

Re: Chris's Evo

You can but it can be a pain in the ass. Especially trying to get the old BS bearings out and installing the new ones.

Which balance shaft bearing is toast? If its the balance shaft driven off the oil pump, you dont need a bearing, just put the stub shaft in where the balance shaft bolts to the oil pump and you are set.

If its the other balance shaft, you'll have to pop the old bearings out, install the new ones 180* off from the oil port. Plug the front case and so forth.

Best bet would be to pull the motor and at least look though it. Inspect main/rod bearings for any shavings. No point in going though all that work if you dont inspect everything else. If there is any shavings at all, in my opinion, I'd tear it down and hot tank the block, make sure all the oil galleys are clean. If there was 3-4 flakes in the pan, who knows what it sucked up and is sitting in an oil passage somewhere ready to block it or get thrown into a rod/main bearing, then pretty soon you'll need a new crank or rod or both.

In my opinion... Bearings are cheap... Pick up a gasket set, bearings, and a balance shaft eliminator set and go through the bottom end.

Re: Chris's Evo

I found a broken stud on the inside of my lower timing cover.. Just have to get the cover off to get it out and find out what the hell happened.. I'm in need of jack stands.. My eclipse is taking up the 4i own..

Re: Chris's Evo

I can bring an extra set of wheels over so we can use those stands

Re: Chris's Evo

I have a couple of extra stands you can use for a bit.

That sounds horrible!

GsXtUrBo98 09-17-2012 08:46 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

It really does but I took off the lower timing cover and found a broken stud that mike thinks is off of a timing belt tensioner tool that broke off and the previous owner left it in there.. Besides that everything looked great and all belts were good and spun with the crank.. Rod were tight also but I didn't do a BS elimination or anything so idk..

Re: Chris's Evo

I'm going to be checking the rid bearings today with mike. I'll let everyone know the outcome.

Evo=Just another DSM. Hope you figure it out and it doesnt drain your pockets fixing it.

GsXtUrBo98 09-19-2012 10:42 AM

Re: Chris's Evo

Bearings all looked pretty good minus one that has somehow rotated on the crank..still have metal shavings in the oil pan.. I don't see any shavings off the rod bearings which means either BS or main.. I'm pulling the motor and dropping it off at a shop for overhaul.

Rotating brains sounds pretty bad.

what's teh plan?

GsXtUrBo98 09-24-2012 01:05 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

He's going to break it open today to find out what's up with it then possibly a built short block but idk yet.. Depends on what he find

GsXtUrBo98 09-27-2012 01:47 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

So the timing belt tensioner tool broke off with the previous owner and he left it in there.. The piece ended up falling down and lodging it between the BS belt and Crank trigger plate bending it to the point it was making that noise..

Ron took apart the engine and everything was good except he said that the previous owner must have ran it low on oil at some point and the rod bearing were starting to spin and it wouldnt have lasted much longer..

In the end I ordered up rods and pistons and the entire timing side will be replaced and the motor will be like brand new! I should get the motor back sometime next week!

Tachyon 09-27-2012 02:03 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

Sounds like you dodged a bullet there with those rods!

GsXtUrBo98 09-27-2012 02:07 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

Ya I did but still had to replace the rods and shit anyways so built motor is in the process.

Still, better than a hole in the side of the block :)

Its not all that bad Aaron.. Now I will have a low milage evo with a brand new motor and I will have known the entire history from here on.. and I'm not throwing a huge turbo or anything at it so it should last for a long while. I hope :) If anything I would do a evo 9 turbo for the next step up on the turbo side. but that isn't going to happen unless I can find a good condition turbo for a good price. I'm having a transmission shop clean my oil cooler as thats what Ron told me to do and also take my turbo to a shop and have them open and clean/inspect it to be safe. Ron is taking care of everything else.

Re: Chris's Evo

Its just scary to see you guys take a loan and buy a newer car, then have it shit the bed and dump thousands more into it.

It should be sweet when it's done though and ready for anything so you won't have to worry.

Going stroker or higher compression at all?

Murlo26 09-27-2012 04:45 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

Ron will take care of you, he is the stock turbo master! :) I'd be hesitant to reuse any oiling components myself, but you didn't really have a failure it sounds like. If there is bearing material, I'd buy a new one but its more money for sure :(

Good luck sir, can't wait to see it done for you.

Reason I am not selling my evo, don't want to mod a corvette with a loan on it and do what I have already done once all over. Fun cars with no loans ftw. Loans are for DD's.

But sometimes shit happens, he is doing it right though I think, keeping it rather simple.

GsXtUrBo98 09-27-2012 05:29 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

I'm going 9.0:1 pistons and yes I didn't have a failure. There was a couple shavings but Ron said that there wouldn't be anything to worry about because all the bearings were intact with no visable markings on them.

turbotalon1g 09-27-2012 09:49 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

Awesome, so you are gonna stay stock turbo too then? when you gonna have this back on the road or planned to?

GsXtUrBo98 09-27-2012 11:30 PM

Re: Chris's Evo

Yes stock turbo with the 10.5 hot side. On the road within the next 2 weeks
