And sounds like the turbo is almost done

Car is at RS getting some love as of this morning! Sounds like the engine will be out today.

Haven't posted updates on here in a while... copying from evomn

Old turbo...
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/SAM_0410.jpg

New turbo and some quieter pads for the street...
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/SAM_0408.jpg

Motor ready to be torn into...
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/SAM_0412.jpg
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/SAM_0413.jpg
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/SAM_0414.jpg

Empty car
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/SAM_0415.jpg

The motor ended up having some scoring in the cylinder walls, so we were going to just overbore .020 on stock sleeves, but that didn't work out, so off the block went to ERL, and they sent back this... bored and honed for my .020 over pistons. Would've gone a bit bigger bore, but I like having plenty of meat and the extra ci isn't worth a 3 week wait on pistons.

http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...Evo/photo1.jpg
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...Evo/photo2.jpg

Also picked up the AMS CMC kit... no more plastic CMC. Adapts evo 8/9 oem CMC.
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/SAM_0442.jpg

Ron started getting things put together.
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...Evo/photo4.jpg
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...Evo/photo5.jpg

Ron noticed this... "T1M"? It was meant to be.
http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...Evo/photo3.jpg

Turns out the block I got from ERL is the newer style with the deleted timing chain oil squirter, which threw us off at first but I guess that's good news. We were also missing two galley plugs from the core, so ERL shipped those up, waiting on those to arrive now.

Awesome dude! I highly suggest you get something other than Girodisc Magics though.

Thanks guys, hopefully not much longer now.

Those are just for street when I'll be doing light cruising and want some quiet. Swapping pads for anything spirited.

Kracka 10-09-2012 12:33 PM

Re: Tim's evo x

Noted, but they are a love/hate pad; people either love them or hate them. I'm personally on the hate side of the fence (tried them on my IX and the ex's WRX). The Stoptech Street Performance pads are much better for a daily-driver, plus they're cheaper (silent, less dust than OEM, etc.). The friction coefficient as they heat up can be downright scary even during a hard highway stop. It's quite strange actually, as they get heated up grip will fade, then they get a little hotter and the grip comes back, and so on... Makes for an interesting fast stop from highway speeds.

I know there are some people on this site who like them, and I hate to sound like I'm bashing, but I seriously couldn't wait to take these things off my IX and my ex bitched about them constantly until I finally replaced them for her.

Re: Tim's evo x

Thanks for the info. I'll read up some more on the X pads (if they're any different) before I install them. They're still in the box, so I could probably return them if they're really that bad. I like the pads that are on there now - I belive they're hawk hp plus. They're just squeaky as hell.

Kracka 10-09-2012 01:19 PM

Re: Tim's evo x

Front pads between the 8/9/X are all identical (and the same as STI/35Z/G35/TL/etc.).

The aftermarket pads I've tried on Evos are:
Girodisc Magic
RacingBrake ET500
Stoptech Street

The ET500's are probably my favorites as they nearly dust-free but were a great street/autox pad, but at half the price the Stoptechs are a very good pad too and work fantastically on an aggressively driven DD (this is what the guys at GTWorx recommend too); they've yet to let me down during even fast group cruises.

Kracka 10-09-2012 01:22 PM

Re: Tim's evo x

Forgot to mention, Girodisc actually has a new street pad in the works that should be out soon, but they said it will be dustier than the Magic's compound.

timschot 10-10-2012 09:55 AM

Re: Tim's evo x

Thanks Kracka. I'll probably return and go stoptechs before I install them then.

Ron's bringing the turbo to MAP today to do the wastegate flapper/actuator arm swap. Then it's all clear to finish building it I believe.

timschot 10-13-2012 01:49 PM

Re: Tim's evo x

I'm told it was started and sounded good!

Ron's figuring out some issues to get it ready to go - airbag light is on, return fuel line popped off, probably clogged in the filter inside the bucket.

timschot 10-19-2012 09:22 AM

Re: Tim's evo x

Picked it up yesterday! It's tuned to 20psi right now, the wastegate and blowoff valves are put to work. Definitely a lot more air coming in with the bigger intake and turbo. Going to put 500-1000 miles on it and bring it back for Ron to work his magic and see what we can get out of it.

I put about 100 miles on it, drove home from RS, then to a buddy's to help with a head gasket after the kid was asleep. Really liking the clutch for driving around... super smooth.

I will be at the dyno day, not dynoing but a buddy will be with his GTO, supercharged (but pretty low boost)

Ron sent over a bunch more pictures too.

Re: Tim's evo x

Evo's all broken in and turned up now. Been posting more on evomn, but figured I'd put an update here. Lost about 500rpm spool and gained a bunch of power up top. This is on 1100cc injectors and a dw65c w/ a KB BAP, running e70 tuned rich enough to run e85 when the pumps switch.

I looked back and found a post where I said my goal was 450/390 on Ron's dyno... I guess we were pretty damn close! 454/388

Nice!!!

I'm glad you decided to keep it :)

Also, this makes me hopeful that I can get close to 450 too since you and I have similar bolt ons.

Re: Tim's evo x

Thanks!

I never wanted to get rid of it - luckily it didn't have to come to that. We got fucked on buying a house in 2007, it's value dropped about 80k.. so even though we've put about 20k into finishing a basement and paid extra on the mortgage for 5 years, we're still going to have to pay a lot on top just to get out of it, IF we can even find a buyer. Plus putting together a down payment for the next place. But we're good now, and in less of a hurry to move anyway.

Yeah, you should make very close to the same numbers. Not much difference in our builds, really. Ron will probably be able to pull up my tune and just tweak it a bit... lol

^Glad to hear you are keeping it.

I was in the same boat as you, i bought in 07 or 06 at the height of the market, fricken blows. Oh well.

That powerband is so badass.

Yay, graphs finally! I love that you stuck with the 65c, and added a BAP, awesome.

How much boost is this on?

Thanks! It feels like a short powerband, but only because it snaps through it so much quicker now. Used to having long gears when I've had this much power in the past.

Haha.. yeah, sorry.. I've been doing some basic evoscan logging but haven't messed enough with virtual dyno yet. Also need to get my wideband serial to usb wired up so I can do some more useful logging in the future.

This is 32psi, tapering to 29. It actually made 444 @ about 27psi, but it was much leaner, that was before the BAP. So I expected more when we turned it up further.. but he kept it nice and rich for when pumps switch of course, so I am more than happy with the numbers.

32 sounds dandy! Will be interesting to see what she does on the track this summer if you're up for it!

Kinda cool setup you got now, stock head, stock cams, stock valvesprings, stock EM/IM/TB right? Getting another 30-40whp out of it should be easy with more bolt-ons but then again no reason to mess with a good solid setup! Now you can focus on the new house and have this beast to rip on. Have fun!

Definitely. Planning on the Amery autox/speed run events for sure, and I'm hoping to get up to BIR for proving grounds, otherwise just some other event.

Yep, all that is still stock. Money is going 100% to house now... maybe next winter it'll get a few of those.

Me too. Looking forward to E85 now.. hah.

Blizzaks being mounted on stock wheels today... currently getting some snow to use them too.

How much snow did you guys get up there?

Re: Tim's evo x

So far maybe 2-3 inches is all I guess. Seemed like it was coming down pretty good, but must've started only this morning. Still going but not real hard. I'm about 45min west of minneapolis though, so don't know about the rest of the cities.
