Re: New advice on buying a new car

Hmm. I was leaning towards the Audi's but from reading this thread it seems like they're a pain to work on. The Audi S4 Avant (the 'wagon' version) was extremely nice when I worked on one a while back. Slightly lower it and rims and it's definitely an eye catcher but it just sucks that modifying it or doing "simple" maintenance on it could be a pain. Have you looked into Lexus and Acura? Lexus GS400?

my vote is get something you don't have to get a loan on. The premise of doing it 'to build credit' is weak IMO

That's a tricky one. It depends on your interest rate. If you can out earn your loans interest rate by investing somewhere else at a higher rate of return, than you're generally better of doing that. It does build credit, and earns you money that you would otherwise have not gotten.

For instance, if a mortgage rate is 4.5% and you know you can gain 6% from an investment account, hell yeah you should take that loan for as long as you can! Dump your paycheck in to the investment account, let it gather interest for 30 days, pull out the payment and let the principal of the investment grow by 1.5%

+1 I've had 1 car payment in my life (when I was 19) and didn't like that. Won't ever do it again if I don't have to. But different strokes for different folks.

I don't plan to get a loan for a car I can't afford. I plan to get a loan on something I can pay off easily. It's unfortunate (but understandable) that you start off with zero credit and have to work your way up. I've gone 24 years without needing a credit card and I still don't need one. But if I plan to buy a house in the future I need to start thinking about credit.

I'm obviously not buying a new car solely to build credit...I'm just killing two birds with one stone.

Does it have to have 4 doors and be awd?

Ever think about the Jaguar x-types? Just throwing out other 4 door awd cars.

I got one for my evo for about half of it and I must say it wasn't bad at all until I bought a house, then I really hated life and the fact that I had a mortgage and evo payment.

If you can get away without one that is ideal. If I could go back I would've saved more and paid more up front for lower payments but I don't think a car loan is the end of the world. I am finishing off the evo loan in a few weeks and not getting another car loan anytime soon, that will feel great.

Oh I'll definitely have a car paid off before I buy a house. I just started a 14 month lease and I don't plan to have a car payment by the time I move outa here :)

Found out today that I've got till my tabs expire before I've gotta get my car emission tested. I'm pretty sure it'll fail since it's got a jdm motor in it, so I need to start making up my mind.

I saw an s60r when i was driving home from work yesterday and while I still think they are pretty sick cars, it kinda blends in. I think I could actually see myself driving an evo if I found a decent deal :)

Re: New advice on buying a new car

p.s. what do you guys think about these cars?

2005 Audi A4
http://www.thesharpestrides.com/vehi...leID=220358708

2005 Wrx wagon
http://denver.craigslist.org/ctd/2803481736.html

Haven't really got too much else right now :(

for some reason I dig the Subie wagon. Pratical and fun

Id get the subaru over a higher mileage A4, unless you have tools and a place to work on said audi. :)

I vote Subaru.

Re: New advice on buying a new car

I vote subaru, red is a rare color..I also vote wait, don't settle for a car you only like get one you love. I mean is buying a car now an absolute must or can you wait a while?

C3L1CA 02-08-2012 12:57 PM

Re: New advice on buying a new car

When do your tabs expire? I'd wait till you find something you really like!

I also vote against that higher mileage audi. Mine had so many thing that seemed to give up and needed replacing after it hit like 95k that I just sold it. haha

Re: New advice on buying a new car

The Subaru isn't bad, plus I don't think I've ever seen a red wagon before, pretty unique!

Re: New advice on buying a new car

The axle on my RS crapped out on me today, so I'll be driving a rental for the weekend and hopefully buying something this weekend. Grr I hate being rushed! Here's a couple more cars to add to the lineup:

Most definitely not 15k, but I'm contemplating wether or not I should pursue this car.
2007 sti limited
http://inventory.coloradousedcarsonl...y/view/6007167

2006 wrx wagon limited
http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/2840974722.html

2005.5 Audi A4
http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/2798546101.html

ylimert01 02-09-2012 06:57 AM

Re: New advice on buying a new car

I would go with the wrx, because its 5 grand cheaper and with little extra cash it can be faster than the sti. Another plus is it's a wagon which is great for hauling stuff.

Kracka 02-09-2012 09:42 AM

Re: New advice on buying a new car

STI Limited wins it in my book (of those three).

Maybe you've already covered this, but if you're looking at STI's, why not look at Evos too? That STI price range should be able to get you into a '09+ Ralliart or an Evo IX both of which will have a roomier backseat than the STI.

A//// Guy 02-09-2012 09:57 AM

Re: New advice on buying a new car

Damn, 80k miles for $23k in the STI? Way overpriced imo...

Kracka 02-09-2012 11:46 AM

Re: New advice on buying a new car

Subarus hold their values like Evo IX's do. Janelle's '07 WRX Limited is still worth probably $19k with 55k miles on it.

This one is a whole 20 minutes from you e85 stock turbo Evo 9 lightly modded:

Here's a steal in California stock stock Evo 9:

Here's where to find at least half the Evo's for sale in the country probably: http://forums.evolutionm.net/sale-cars-sale-134/

Re: New advice on buying a new car

Thanks gh I'ma talk to the guy with the red 9 and see how flexible he is with the price. I'll go check it out for sure.

And for the record...I drove a 2007 LGT spec b last night. The car is quick and I dig the interior, but the car as a whole just doesn't excite me too much. Just my opinion though and we all know that's not worth much. :)

goodhart 02-10-2012 10:04 AM

Re: New advice on buying a new car

The red IX should excite you plenty then. Moar powa than ur DSM had, but 10x the reliability. haha

HiImBrian 02-10-2012 11:24 AM

Re: New advice on buying a new car

Not gonna close out my options though because if I can't get an affordable loan then the evo might be out :(

In the meantime, which wagon wins?

Red 2004 wrx wagon -$10900
http://denver.craigslist.org/ctd/2803481736.html

Blue 2006 wrx limited wagon -$15900

I'd think so too kinda. Comes with 2 sets of rims/tires, limited package, and a nice system along with half the mileage. Main reason I'm thinking the 04 is because I don't see that price dropping too much in the next couple years. Maybe I'm wrong?

A//// Guy 02-10-2012 11:43 AM

06, worth the low miles for sure.

Model year 04-05 WRX's value dies FAST after 100k miles (even worse for wagons and automatics). I would go for the 06 with less miles for sure.

Next question:
Where else should I look into loans aside from my bank? Any recommendations?

Credit union. I know several people on here have good ones to recommend.

I spent the money and got my rs fixed tonight, so I guess I've got more search time. I'm still gonna go check out the 06 limited wrx wagon tomorrow :)

That's not within your 20k budget! Lol. Nice car for sure but I almost puked when I seen the price tag, and the thoughts of a large monthly payment.
