Then go buy one. You are not going to see a whole line of cars extinct from this program. To qualify you have to have had the car registered and insured for over 1 year which rules out a ton of people who would like to do the program.

I think people are looking at the cars and getting caught up with their exterior appearance and thinking it is a "nice" car that is being traded in. I am sure all of the cars in the pictures have a ton of miles and some issues.

That Aurora in the video looked like a nice car until they said it had 240k miles. I wouldn't drive a GM with that many miles. Others probably have tranny issues, or other items. Car has to be in running shape, doesn't have to run or drive well.

Yeah, it may have had a lot of miles, but it sounded pretty good... well, to start. They also lied about it having every warning light on the dash on, because when they showed the gauge cluster, I didn't see a damn thing. But I'm sure they were all on after they were done.

Well, being that this started as a DSM site I think people are comfortable wrenching on a car. Usually when I look for car or truck I look for one with a good body and a few mechanical issues. End up saving some $$$ that way.

America is famous for our passion for cars. We have some real survivors and alot of people I know would rather restore or fix-up an older car that looks good rather than overpay for some over optioned ugly piece of crap that the auto makers are trying to convince us we want and or need.

Not everybody can run out and buy new Vipers every year you know ;):D

Business made money and bought the second one :) I plan on selling the black one.

I typically buy cars like you, needing a bit of work, but we are in the minority. The red viper had some issues when I bought it and so did both of my trucks. The ford that I will probably trade in runs fine, just has some rust and is old (88). I bought it for $400a year ago as a work truck. Never stranded me. I don't think anyone will be upset seeing a pic of it on the internet as a clunker trade in ;)

But then again there is probably some F150 forum where one guy is looking for a specail part on that year who could be upset....

It is going to be hard for me to give up my insight (58mpg) when and if I trade in my clunker. Don't need a new car but the CARS program is a pretty good deal. I definitly don't need 2 daily drivers though.

That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for right now

Especially if it's a 4.9L straight six

If you can get $4500 for it then that's a deal. I just hate to see basically decent full size pickups and SUV's go to the scrap man :(

Looks like the program is over or at least suspended:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090731/...h_for_clunkers

Over 22,000 vehicles traded in as of wendesday according to the link.

I have been calling around to honda dealers to see if anyone is open late but I don't think so as I cannot get ahold of anyone.

Interesting as the CARS.GOV site says there is still 7XXM remaining... No word on their site also.

I heard on another site they are considering upping it to 3b if it goes well.

our detailers have been VERY busy these last few days..cleaning over 20 cars a day for delivery. We got SLAMMED today, as the sales people called to have their customers finish paperwork and such before the 12 O'clock deadline. We are starting the clunker destruction tomorrow with all the cars we have. Draining the oil/coolant, driving them to the "bowling alley/graveyard" and if they don't blow by then, we got something like 55 gallons of liquid glass to fully destroy them. Then, off to the crusher.

it's technically suspended, till the gov. catches up on just how much has been spent.

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program

Just goes to show that they were not prepared for the mass amounts of people that wanted to cash in. $4,500 plus the 2-4k discounts on new cars, people were naturally going to flood the market on this deal. A government program should never be "suspended" because they are going "oh shit we didn't think it would go this fast what do we do?". I was just talking to a guy at work about this just before it started. I knew there would be some type of hang up in this and it wouldn't be a seamless effort. Sometimes quick effort to a problem presents issues the government doesn't account for.

Walser Hyundai

It has 138K miles, couple of minor dents, and it looks like it was keyed but I'd still rock it.

This is crazy. To me it's another attempt for the government to control what we do and what we drive.

Maybe she's talking about being eco-friendly?riiiggghhht.......

"MMMMHMMM MMMMMMMM, what's your hybrid sound like?"

we probably aren't really worried about it because it really doesn't pertain to us since we didn't cash in our "clunkers". i dunno though, i think it's pretty messed up.

Did you hear that???

One more time now...

That was the sound of me getting in my hybrid and driving around town. Bastard doesn't make any noise, hell doesn't even start by cranking :) The electric motor must turn the gas motor over or something as you turn the key and the engine becomes on.

my friend bought a prius, and we calculated it out, and we figured out he needed to drive the car at LEAST 10 years to make up for the extra cost of buying a hybrid. That was last summer, so probably using higher than necessary gas prices though.

Most of the time I will agree with you but if you but not in my case.

Then I bought mine, I was driving a 2G GST. I ran the numbers and with gas at $2.25, I would save over $3500 per year in fuel savings alone. I bought the car used for $8700 (great deal at the time) and have now owned it for 3.5 years. The highe gas prices went the more I saved.

I also received a check for $3000 for the hail damage caused in a storm last year. I definitly wasn't going to get it fixed.

That car is the best purchase I have ever made, 90k miles later not one issue. If you know what you are doing they can be a great purchase.

Either A: He doesn't drive much, or B: He bought new which it is hard to compare a hybrid prius to a prius which isn't a hybrid as they don't make any.

How much did he buy it for and what was he trying to compare the price to?

slowbubblecar 08-03-2009 12:41 PM

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program

I don't see the real value in buying a new hybrid (especially the ones like the prius getting 40 mpg or so), but buying one used like my brother did (70mpg) when he drives a lot has paid for the car the past few years.
