Got the Evo IX turbo and HKS 280 cams in a short while ago, will be heading to DB Performance this Wednesday to get tuned. I'm excited to see where it's at now and where it will be after Shane works his magic.

Re: My Evo

Hit the rollers yesterday afternoon at DB Performance. With the first pull Shane knew right away something was up when it only mustered something like 238HP. He played around a bit and got it to 250-something but with the mods I have done it should still be more than that. We discussed things a bit and decided to do a boost leak test and take off the valve cover and look around.

Boost leak test was perfect. Took off the valve cover and all the rockers were in place, so we inspected the cams. I bought them used off of evolutionm.net from a reputable guy with a 900HP Evo that he delivers pizzas with and has been on the cover of Turbo magazine, didn't think anything of it, when I got them they said HKS and that was good enough for me. After installation my car didn't sound any different than stock. Thinking I had installed HKS 280s I was expecting a deep lope at idle. It kind of wanted to lope and did sometimes when it wasn't fully warmed up, but it wasn't consistent. Shane and I got the part numbers off the cams and looked them up online. Sure enough, the intake cam is definitely a 264. We weren't able to pinpoint the exhaust cam, so don't know what it is. Needless to say I was bummed.

Put the valve cover back on and did a compression test while we're at it. Came out with 160-170-160-135. Bummer. There have been people with valve issues so I'm hoping that's what the issue is and it isn't the rings. Put new plugs in, buttoned it all back up, added a little more boost and Shane played around some more.

Got it consistently to around 270 after a few more pulls and called it good. Here are the goods.

Black line was the initial pull.

I've sent a message already to the guy to try and get a refund or some sort of compensation, but I'm already looking for some different cams. I have a dyno day at MAP this Saturday and an autocross on Sunday then will need to do a leakdown test. Two more autocrosses before the season is over, then who knows what the winter will bring.

Big thanks again to Shane at DB Performance for going above and beyond. When people say he's the man they aren't lying.

Hopefully things work out with the guy you bought the cams from. What cams are you looking at as an replacement?

I'd like to stick to HKS 280s because they're proven and they work with the stock valvetrain. I haven't done enough research to justify changing my mind yet, but I also don't want to reinvent the wheel in the process. If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Bummer about the cams! good luck with the seller!

on a side note... how does the car feel now, compared to when you brought it in?!?

Sounds good about sticking with the HKS 280's.

It feels better, doesn't fall on its face so bad up top. The addition in power is noticeable. I sort of merged onto 35W sideways this morning in the rain...

Re: My Evo

Leakdown test should let ya know if its the problem or not. Then its time to start swapping parts and find the problem. FMIC, piping, turbo looked ok....exhaust plugged/bent/dented somewhere?

If it is the head, then look at it as an opportunity to upgrade; valvesprings, valvejob, maybe some porting, and bigger cams...all it takes is money, you've got lots of that, right?

I had never heard of them until a few months before I bought mine. Tons of people were seeing great numbers with them and ultimately I think it was shane that turned me onto them over the 280's. They did move my boost threshold back a bit but the top-end is undeniably better, which was exactly what I wanted. The added lift and smoother idle sold me on them, but for a 100% stock valvetrain the hks 280's with their low lift and gentle ramp rates are still my #1 recommendation. 'Race' cams, you know ;)

I didn't give an F about Kelfords until i saw the AMS cam test. From then on they were a great option in my book. (yes i have a book o_0)

Re: My Evo

that sucks about the cams! as for my 272's they don't lope all that much. when I had my car tuned shane had thought I had adjustable gears and degreed them in since they're wasn't much lope but I definitely didn't ( thats also in a 1g awd). but good luck I hope you get something back from the seller

What about GSCs? they seemed to do good in that test also.

Re: My Evo

Safe bet cams, CBRD likes to recommend them, they are decent but I don't know anyone personally that has them....until wednesday, Silk has them in his car now...btw he made 450whp on shane's dyno on E85 & the HKS264/272 combo (IIRC).

*edit* they were GSC S1's...not sure how old they were though.

Kracka 10-02-2009 03:24 PM

Re: My Evo

His old cams were pre-S1 I believe. He now has the S2's.

GSC makes good cams, but I like the FP4R because its a compromise between the S1 and S2 and doesn't require aftermarket valve springs. They also don't sacrifice the low-end like the Kelford 272's do.

Matt D. 10-02-2009 04:22 PM

Re: My Evo

Is this the AMS cam thread you guys are talking about: http://forums.evolutionm.net/evo-eng...-cam-test.html

I was hoping to find HKS cams compared.

Re: My Evo

That's the one, Matt. Just keep in mind the test was performed with a built engine and large turbo.

Re: My Evo

Had Shane at DB do a leakdown test tonight, results are far from stellar, but they tell the tale of why my car acts how it does.

Compression: 163, 180, 165, 140
Leakdown: 18%, 3%, 12%, 52%

1, 3 and 4 were clearly leaking out the exhaust. 4 was leaking so much that you could hear it going through the exhaust manifold and turbo and didn't even have to listen at the back of the car. 2 was perfect.

If your compression was not shot, what would you have expected for power with these mods that you have listed?

Or did Shane have any insight on the estimated power?

I'm confident in the bottom end, but the head has clearly seen better days.
