Well, I'm taking it in tomorrow to get hot tanked and magnafluxed, so today would be the day for checking it ourselves. Otherwise I might have the shop check it since it's there anyway. We'll see and I'll let you know.

Got the anchor out today.

This is a good pic of the crack going toward the back of the engine.

I really don't want to get new ARP studs, but I might have to since I used 'em to hoist the engine out, lol.

Please take pictures of your pistons ring lands.

G54B cam gear holder > all. That little tab is the best part of the motor.

Yeah, they knew we'd be taking them apart sooner or later. That's why they put such wide tool trays on the inner fenders.

Nice guess! This is a major bummer:

Only one piston was cracked, but they all have varying degrees of wear on the thrust sides. Enough that I am concerned. But I have already made up my mind to get new pistons. Sad. Plus one of my rods is all discolored on the small end like it was torched. I had one rod "repaired" or refreshed or something when I had it all machined, so I don't know if it's from that or not.

Also, the #1 rod bearing chamfered itself on the rearward edge by rubbing on the crank. My guess there is that when they machined the crank, they kindof forgot to go all the way to the end of the journal. I now have to get the crank checked out. I had seen some metal flecks in the oil a time or two before and didn't worry, but now I know what was doing it. Lame.

This is going to cost way more and take way longer than I thought.

Which piston was that? A little less timing on pump gas next time, that sucks.

Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block

Number 4. And yeah, I will definately take out timing, and this build is going to be done much more competently than the last one.

4G6X time.

I could probably make money on a 4g63 swap.

Yep, time to switch motors.

Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block

too soon though. I have to make a lot of power on this setup for this year. Next winter maybe I'll switch to another engine if any problems arise.

A good tune is all it will take.

sounds good man, i wish you all the best!

P.S. Go forged!

Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block

I need 500 bucks for a set 'o forged pistons. Pretty steep. I might go the broke route with Hypers again, and run like 12 degrees instead of 17. *oops*

It has forged pistons, shot peened rods, new bearings etc. also has a crank trigger set up off of a 83 crankpully,

Agreed!

Thats a great deal. Also consider less timing then that until it sees a dyno just to be safe. Did you sync the ignition timing?

Fuck yeah, and 17* timing? you been away too long.

Good luck and be uber safe this time.

Well... I can tune it, before you start it up this time if you'd like :).

Tough luck on that engine, but what a convinent deal that just came up!

Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block

Wow, holy crap, I will jump on that. Let me finger out my money, and I'll send you a PM, but I'm about a million percent sure I'll get it.

And yeah, the timing was synced, but not at high RPM (didn't adjust for drift, or check for it, for that matter). Like I said, this time will be done right.

Ouch. Well it happens to the best and the worst of us. Thats why I started with piggybacks and then training, then standalones. Everytime I've had to learn something knew it has been on a car I am 100% responsible for.

Timing drift/sync will eat you up at higher rpm. Plus in the beginning I know you were having driveability issues with huge AFR swings as well. Take it as a learning experience and be thankful it wasn't on a REALLY EXPENSIVE motor :).

FattyBoomBatty 01-10-2009 10:00 AM

Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block

Yeah, most of those driveability issues were my fault and I got them pretty much figured out. It's all good in the hood for now. :) Thanks for all your replies everyone.
