What the hell is a strocker?

Re: Motor rebuild
Jacek told me to rebuild the motor so it would last there is alot of miles on the motor, and who knows how much more it would give me. I could just bolt on the add ons, but what if I blew it up right away. I want it to be done the right way, so I dont have to worry about breaking anything, or wonder if I get on it to hard that it might blow up. It is all a safety deal. If I spend that much money on add ons and have it blow up where am I then. I am sorry if I sound like a dick, I am not trying to. Don't you guys just love how much horsepower these cars can put out. I just love that you can build a 4 cyclinder car to run and beat bigger motor cars, and that you can get that much horsepower out of them.

Re: Motor rebuild
It really depends on your goals, if you are likely to keep wanting to mod the car, I would start with a good foundation (longblock) and go from there. The points Steve brought up are good for the average DSMer, the factory shortblock is extremely strong as is, and for a car that is in the 400-500 range, should be adequate. Budget and realistic end goals are the main things that should be considered in a decision like this.

Re: Motor rebuild
Nash's engine has at least 130k on it, I think it is over 150k, but I am not sure. I wouldn't worry about the bottom end, how many miles are on the car? Do a compression test and see how that turns out. The older engines are looser and won't seize up as easily, just run 'er!

Re: Motor rebuild
I am sorry but what exactly is the difference between a long block and a short block? Sorry I am new with these cars and they give me the chills on what you can do to them. I have about 150k on the motor, and I dont know how to do a compression test. My goals may take awhile but I can do them if I want it bad enough. I think I need to be around you guys some more, so I can learn some of this stuff in depth. Jacek is a good friend and has helped me alot. Can you guys teach me more? I love these cars and want to learn more.

Re: Motor rebuild
A short block is just the lower end, a long block includes the head. It is going to take a long time to work up to 500 whp, just start with the basic mods and work your way up. You can get in the 12's pretty easily for under $1k. An exhaust, some porting, UICP, SAFC and a few other small things. Your clutch won't hold long at those levels, so plan on a clutch shortly after you do the basic's.

So what can I all get done for a thousand dollars?

Re: Motor rebuild
I thought andy's bottom end was out of patric's old car, that was rebuilt by shidley with 2G pistons etc. Not that it matters, just seemed to be what I remember.

Re: Motor rebuild
Yeah, I guess that was the old one that had all the miles on it. The one he ran an 11.2 on. He made 426 whp on that one if I remember right.
Mods for $1k, you will need a UICP, K&N, boost controller and exhaust. That should net you low 13's on pump gas with a slightly lightened car, throw in some race gas and you should see a high 12. To do it more safely you should have a 2g MAF, injectors and SAFC also. Throw on a DP and some turbo & O2 housing porting and you will be solidly into the 12's on pump, but the clutch will probably be toast from all the extra power, so throw that in there too. Spend $120 and throw on a boost controller (set at 15 psi), boost guage, and K&N. You will be amazed and the mod'ing madness will begin :D |

I believe you are correct if I'm remembering correctly. |

Mikey you're in about the same boat I have been in for sometime. However, I am only looking to attain a wheel horsepower level of 350-400 hp. Check out this thread for some more discussion about what I've like to eventually be running for a powertrain and drivetrain configuration: http://www.dsmstyle.com/forums/showt...5&page=1&pp=30 Hopefully by reading through that thread some of your questions will be answered although you will probably come up with some more questions, but that's all good! :) |
Re: Motor rebuild
So what can I get done with 1k?
|
Re: Motor rebuild
It's was just answered above, but there a alot of differant things to consider. Do you want to pay top dollar for parts (will chop the budget up quick) or try for some "cheaper" options. Alot of the choices you are going to have to make.
But I would do: Intake, Exhaust, Better clutch to put the power down, MBC, gauges, AFC. And right there in most cases goes 1K out the wallet. |

Re: Motor rebuild
Wolhfman's project is a very long term project and wants to be able to drive the car every day. The car won't be on the road for a while. His engine is leaky and is possible that it has worn valve guides. So I suggested for him to rebuild the engine and start out with that. He his target goal right now is to be 450-500 and with a strong longbock if later down the road he wants more power as a goal, that step would be out of the way once he is use to the power and learns a lot more.
