Did you actaully put parts in it or just take it apart and reassemble it?

Will it need to be balanced after it's all taken apart and put back together?

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

i rebuilt and replaced the seal so that it wouldnt burn so much smoke while he waited to put the new return on. unfortunately the seal was damaged in the 30 miles that he drove his car. if the parts would have been readily available his car would have a great oil seal and an even better running motor.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

I just don't know how the return line could have caused it to fail so quickly.

The return line wasn't all that bad. it did have a few dings in it, but nothing that would have restricted oil all that much. and it was leaky because we didn't have a gasket going to the turbo thats understandable.

There is that dent towards the tops

It's hard to get a pic inside because of the light but there's no way that small restriction caused it to go out so quickly

this sides pretty good too

When i start the car (initial idle) and at WOT its well over 100psi. (maxed my gauge out)
Do you think possibly the oil restricter is bad? because i could understand how 100psi could blow the seal.

when you just replaced the exhaust wheel, that had a new seal on it but you said my other seal looked fine? so what else could it have been? could it have also been the compressor house or end cap oring? Im running out of ideas.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

yeah, 100psi is bad. max you want to see is 60-70psi, but is your gauge after the restriction or before? And the holset's are supposed to have a 19mm(3/4") ID Minimum on the return line.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

The gauge is before i literally took out the stock sending unit and replaced it with this one.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

My gauge reads up around 100 psi when I'm up above 5k. Idle is like 10-12 psi.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

If you run a restrictor. You need to measure the oil pressure after the restrictor if you want to measure the inlet pressure into the turbo. a .100" restriction is typically appropriate for a journal bearing turbo, which yours probably is.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

Ok so as long as Julien is not too tired, he's going to come down to Winona tonight and RE-rebuild it. i would drive it to him except it honestly pisses out 1QT of oil a minute directly from the hot side of the turbo.
