Impressive pricing. I can't quite wrap my head around how you turn a decent profit off of only charging $35 but hey, all the better for the consumer.

Hell, I can pay a guy $10 to sandblast a vc. And it's not gunna take more than an hr's work to coat it using approx $5 worth of powder. That's pretty decent profit imo. lol that's how I price out stuff I powdercoat at least.

Don't you NOT want to powder coat calipers?

I thought powder coating a caliper will make it retain a lot more heat than other painting options.

Re: Powder Coating Pricing

As far as calipers go, It really depends on the cars primary use,
most enthusiasts don't heat up there calipers to that point,
Yes if your out running at the track on a regular basis where you have noticed a problem with brake fade or brake fluid boil (on the extreme side)
we also do heat dissipating coatings in a full line of colors for those of you needing that,
Powder is a great coating for most people, It is heat resistant and solvent resistant, and is available in a huge line of colors,
feel free to PM any of us a the shop if you have any more questions,

Honestly the profit is slim on this. The process is not just blast and coat here.
This is our process:
Take the valve cover, clean if needed
Put the cover in our chemical stripper to get off all the paint or coating
Pressure wash the cover
Blast the cover
Let the cover soak to get out all the blasting material left in little cracks
pressure wash it again
Hang the cover
Spray the cover with brake clean to insure its clean
Coat the cover
Bake cover
Then inspect the cover for defects and make sure its perfect

Sry I didn't mean to come off as rude. You guys sure do have quite the prep process. Just curious though, why do you bother cleaning and stripping the vc if you are just going to blast it afterwords? I completely understand cleaning it after you blast it to ensure a clean and prepped surface, but why even bother before hand?

Re: Powder Coating Pricing

If you don't clean it before you blast it, any oil or other contaminates will get beat down into the metal by the blasting media which can cause problems once the coating is on and baked.

Re: Powder Coating Pricing

We clean it before we toss it in the stripper to keep our stripper clean. Who wants dirty stripper? :)
And we strip it to make blasting easier. With all the coating off blasting is a breeze instead of trying to blast the coating off.

Approx. how much would it be to get a set of 17x8's powder coated? Do you have what is necessary to do a cast wheel without making it weaker (Low-temp or something?) What would the turn around time be?

Are you saying baking a wheel for 20 mins will weaken it?

Wtf? I'm pretty sure they do that all the time.

I hope you aren't wasting your time on those 3000GT wheels.. :)

Haha I kept the 3000gt wheels. He's talking about the Lexus wheels that were on my 240.

Normal powder coating processes will effectively make the metal more brittle because of the high temperature. The wheel will still be rigid, but it will not be able to withstand forces like it originally did. There are low temp powders that cure at around 375 degrees that are meant to be used for wheels and other parts that see stress.

Re: Powder Coating Pricing

The powder we use cures at anywhere from 350-400 degrees depending on the powder. Wheels are $70 a wheel for single color. Includes prep work.

Okay, great. I'll let you guys know if I end up going that route!

Can you match colors at all? Or are there just a few colors available?

You guys did my VC last year when I had the fittings welded on, and now it's starting to look bad. Almost like there's sand in the coating or something...ideas?

We have a bunch of colors. Our supplier can also color match if we send them a sample. Only downfall to that is we have to order a bunch of it. But it can be done

First of all you should have let us powder coat the whole valve cover. Just doing a spot is really tricky. and I don't think there would be sand in the coating. The covers are always cleaned before coating. If there was sand in it it would have showed up as soon as it got done curing.

I only did the corner, cuz Jesse said that's all it needed. I'm not pointing fingers or getting pissed, just seeing what can be done.

I can take a look though,
Jesse
