^Andy i know what holsets are btw, nick is just messing with me.

i think i might take this welding thing to another level.
My only issue is getting a huge spike, but not being able to hold it, i would be good with 25psi to redline, either way i got to shift early cause i can't make power up top.

Hit me up with a PM. Once I get the current car out of here, I will take a ride with you and we can check it out.

Re: Can't hold boost, did a boost leak test, check inside.

Backpressure might just be blowing the flapper open. To run and hold high boost on external wastegate cars, you often have to use the top port on the external and push boost to it, to act as a much stronger spring under boost. You can't do that on a single port internal gate, and internal gates often have weak springs. At 30psi intake side, you might have 50-60+psi of backpressure in the exhaust manifold/turbine housing, just pushing the flapper open all the way.

Re: Can't hold boost, did a boost leak test, check inside.

I know were running E85 so we can boost this high but what is the point? This turbo's peak efficiency range is like 27-28 MAX. After that it's pretty much just hot air blowing and your probably killing the life of the turbo. You can probably make more power with adding more timing and running the 26 to 28. Although I still spike to 27-28 and drop down to 24 by redline and wish I didn't there's really nothing you can do on the internal gate.

Re: Can't hold boost, did a boost leak test, check inside.

Don't worry buddy i know a little bit about running this thing, luckily i have a great FMIC, after a run, even on the dyno where my car runs hot the cold side of the FMIC is cool to the touch while the hot side you can barely hold on to.

Also, i go off of what is proven and that is the top end of the map for the E316G is a mystery, plus we have people nationally setting the bar, not including DSM god himself Curt Brown.

Also where did you come with 27-28 being the max? any proof?

I have timeslips that show my spike to 33 and settle to 22 is good for .2 faster et and 4mph. compared to last year spike to 28-29 and settle to 18-19.

Either way i got a few more tricks up my sleeve for this thing, i just wanted to know if anyone knew of anyways to hold boost, like i said the only car i have seen locally is 2g tsi when he posted his dyno sheet.
Hey dave, did you have an aftermarket intake pipe on your car? That is the only restriction that i can see right now.

Like has been said before, It seems like going with an external gate might be the best option.

Re: Can't hold boost, did a boost leak test, check inside.

I know you know what your doing, hell what do I know running around with a 15.2 afr? lol. What I stated is what I've heard over the last 3 years or so about this turbo. No hard facts, it's basically the whole reason the turbo drops off boost is cause it's not efficient enough to hold that high of boost in the upper rpm's. But like I said this is all that I've "heard" so go out and prove me wrong.

Also I believe the intake would be a pretty good restriction. Get a 3" and I'm sure you'll hold a bit more boost. Even a "street" version of a SMIM would help it out alot also.

Lol, for that price you might as well go external.

Meh, assuming you bought things new.

Re: Can't hold boost, did a boost leak test, check inside.

Most Forge shit is expensive junk.

To hold more boost, tack weld the actuator arm with the flapper closed. Or if you have a bigger upgraded flapper, get a smaller one. The larger the flapper surface are the more likely it will be pushed open. Having the flow towards the flapper all nicely ported is going to make it worse too. All the shit you do to prevent creep with a 16G is not what you want, if you are trying to run high boost on one. If you can get a bigger exhaust wheel in there, or clip it, do that. If you can get a bigger exhaust housing, do that.

The compressor wheel, inlet size, etc can only flow so much air, regardless of boost level. Sometimes you get to a powerlevel and the turbo holds that power while the boost drops as the RPMs go up because the turbo is just maxed. This even happens with bigger turbos running external wastegates. You can have perfectly solid across the board boost control and then you get to some HP level where you can only get more boost in the lower/mid RPMs and the boost up top just falls back down to the same psi/HP.

Couldn't you just tack weld the flapper shut, permanently, to alleviate it from blowing open period. Then just run full boost all the time! Or are there some ill side effects that I dont' know of?

I will weld your TB up for $20 drop it off anytime.

I thought a welded flapper would make almost 40psi at lower rpms, guess I'm wrong.

Aaron, I know of a '93 Rx-7 chassis and an LSX with everything needed to put it together for 11k. ;)

I thought I'd just sidetrack him.. This thread has already gone for like a day without him changing his mind.. That is just crazy talk so I thought I'd help him on his normal way. :pc:

^lol, that is awesome, looks like you know me well. I am trying to break that habit, but its gonna be a long hard road.

Shane it was posted on tuners, i swear it said 33 spike but held 30 to redline.
Another guy that went 10.9 on 16g spiked to 40 and settle to 30 by redline.
John you still need to reply to my pm, i will let you know about the tb.

Thanks for the help guys, i have some other issues at hand right now, but once i get back to the car running i will take care of the TB and AFPR, then try the turbo again.

I thought I replied, I will check again. I also thought I watched your waist gate arm on the dyno and it did not move, but something could have changed I guess.

There is a little bit of play on the puck, i can say that i really don't want to spike any higher, but i got to do what i got to do.

Nitrous might help hold boost.
