Warm water is the upper layer of water which moves north. As it is cooled in the artic region it sinks to the bottom of the ocean and starts moving south again until it reaches warmer climate, raises in temperature which then makes it leave the bottom of the ocean and become the top layer moving north again. As warm water (which brings warm air) reaches the northern hemisphere, ice/glaciers melt and dump water into the Atlantic Ocean. Global warming only adds to the effect. You say "So, what's the big deal with that?" Here's the big deal with that, inland ice that form glaciers is made from rain/fresh water, not sea water. So when this fresh water hits the Atlantic Ocean in large quantities as it will be doing soon, it disrupts the "Atlantic Conveyer" flow. This slows/stops warm water from moving north through the Atlantic. Since warm air/water stop moving north, it gets colder. This is actually how an "Ice-age" gets started. It could only take 10 years of this to completely stop the "conveyer", but 100 years to get it started again.

Basically that's what happened in the movie... The Day After Tomorrow. The movie may have been a little extreme, but it's the same concept.

Vicious, where is the proof that the inland glaciers are melting? I have seen a lot of mixed evidence out there. The average temperature of the earth as a whole has not changed much since they were able to keep accurate records.

Looking at the other side of things, what if the earth is able to "cleanse" itself much more than most people realize? Weather patterns seem to go in a 70 year cycle.

Is there anything worse to say to a dsmstyle member?A good come back s2 would have been this http://www.iter.org/ you could say, look they are doing something. Just not in the US. Oh one last thing for those of you who check out the first link, lol, remeber the new spiderman movie? Remember tritium? doc oc wanted it to use in his fusion reactor. the fusion reactor that peter parker the smart person said wouldnt work. and sure enough in the movie the reactor blows up, luckily not owning new york. Talk about controlling the public. if i went out and asked someone about tritium they would say "oh that was in a spiderman movie!"

Hey hippie, read into my sarcasm...I was saying they ARE spending billions of dollars per year on alternative fuel research. That is part of the reason why our gas prices are so high right now. I believe BP is leading that pack.

Re: Signs of Global Warming

What the frick is this. "oil peak" GAS is expensive because they are discovering 1 barrel of oil for every 2 they make. Asian countries are starting to gulp down oil now cuz everyone is getting a car. supply demand, NOT alternative fuel research, lol, ur funny. google oil peak you'll understand. anyways im done with this i was trying to have constructive conversations.

s2 why dont you show everyone the "billions of dollars" in alternative fuel research by oil companies and why that is the reason for expensive gas.

Re: Signs of Global Warming

Lets see, if they are spending a lot is sure as hell isn't coming out of their pocket. So you're saying with every oil cycle the supply is being cut in half? Nonesense.

Re: Signs of Global Warming

he said discovering 1 barrel per 2 farmed...oil is more sparce snd spread out....the earth will never run out of oil, it will become too costly to supply the worlds demands....THAT is a known fact.

Enough with the name calling

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...s/3736826.html BP alone plans to spend $8 billion over the next decade.

That'd be cool as I have also read about oil companies dumping money into alternative fuel research, but I have yet to see anything which links those R&D expenditures to the high crude oil prices.

You don't need a scientist to tell you about global warming. Just look at what winter was like ten years ago in Minnesota compared to this year. It really is rather sadening. I remember being able to make tunnels in my front yard throught the snow, now its a rarity to have to shovel. Pretty soon we'll forget all about snow, 10 more years, thats my bet.

I'm glad we are talking about this, I just saw a show on the Discovery Science channel about this a few minutes ago. It was called "The Big Chill". Look for it, it explains alot. They stated directly that Iceland's (or Greenland's, can't remember which) glaciers are melting and receeding at a rate of 12 kilometers a year. Maybe a decade ago they were receeding at 6 kilometers a year, so the rate has doubled in recent times. In the next 50 years the waters that dump into the Atlantic Ocean from several rivers will double due to global warning, which will dilute the salt water and slow or stop the "conveyer".

I've heard that Europe will suffer an extreme drop in temperatures due to shifts in the oceans' currents.
