I poured in a gallon of old gas I had for the lawn mower (bp93 of course!) and it fired up!! I was pumped! I started to put things back together and i noticed the MAF was unplugged. Surely I had checked that before? Hrmmm. Got it all back together, fired up, died. WTF! Go and unplug the Maf, fires up and purrs like a kitten!
Murlo, can I borrow your Maf sensor? :) |

That's weird that the MAF sensor would just crap out like that. Did it get jarred just right when it was removed or something? Glad to hear its running!

God what a joke, I SWEAR I tried to start the car w/o the maf but I'm guessing I tried unplugging the cam sensors instead. I'll try and get murlo's maf tomorrow and swap it in for mine. Hopeufully that is it, maybe I can spray mine down with some maf cleaner or something. I don't know how it would have gotten damaged sitting on my workbench, in the middle of the the intake tube it hardly could have gotten dirty! It reads like 1.2V in evoscan when idling and 1.8v when I rev it so it *is* reading something. Just weird.
Spent the rest of the night bolting the hood back on, oil change, torquing crank pulley, and getting the snow tires down from the attic. I wanna drive the thing so bad but work again just owns me. Fingers crossed on this job I interviewed for yesterday! Wheels are sitting next to the car, I'll bolt them on and take it out for a spin tomorrow as soon as I get home from work, hopefully before the snow comes! Thanks again for all the help everyone, couldn't have done it w/o you! I have a vid of the startup, I'll post it soon. |

Badass man! Yea anytime you can swing over would be awesome. I'm going to try and duck out of work around by 4pm and get home to finish things up before the snow flies!
Left to do: Top off oil check coolant mount stock rims w/ snow tires mount strut-tower bar Swap in Murlo's MAF (also I bought some maf cleaner for mine) check exhaust hangers in back (tips look low or something?) figure out last exhaust manifold/turbo bolt (couldn't get one in, gave up) boost leak test Later: Change oil in GLI, been putting that off :) Order new MAF? OEM spark plugs Return borrowed parts to murlo, lomker, MAP. |

If you need OEM spark plugs too, I might be able to bring mine over as well...I can ask my buddy who is coming over tonight (mechanic) to bring tools to pull the plugs, let me know.

Nice. How much do you expect to gain from those cams and headwork then? Maybe 25-30whp? I'm excited about this thing man, it's a shame it seems any X's that make decent power need a built motor though. :(

There are a lot of higher powered X's still on stock blocks with t3 kits...its the guys like us that try for big power on stock frame turbo's that have problems. Lag and less torque seem to be they key to a high powered X.

Tonight I got the car back on the road. It sounded like a diesel for about the first four miles. I did some 2nd and 3rd gear vacuum pulls to seat the rings immediately. Parked it, troubleshooted the maf sensor some more, and murlo came over with his MAF. Swapped it in, and it did the *exact* same thing. So not sure what the deal is, BOO!
BUT, the car idles, revs, and drives about 90% fine with the maf unplugged! Its pretty amazing really, there is a slight hesitation around 2500rpm but nothing aweful, I'm sure the map scaling tables need some tweaking. We drove all over, put another 11 miles on it. Drove to roseys, some freeway time, and side streets, plenty of vacuum pulls the whole way. When we got back to my place, I kept thinking, 'man, it SOUNDS so much better! I thought it was a big exhaust leak but it is breaking in I guess as the engine sounds perfect now. Anna and I are off to SuperTarget to stock up before the storm :) Thanks for the help Murlo! |

I was just thinkin about this on my way home after reading it earlier today, did the maf sensor wiring get pinched at all while setting the motor back in? just a random thought.

After talking with Shawn (simulatedwood) I am convinced this is a grounding problem. The ecu is seeing voltage from the maf sensor, just not sure it is the correct voltage. I'm going to double-check more tomorrow, and possibly pull the exhaust manifold off the head to try and get the turbo properly bolted to it.
Did a boost leak test, holds 5psi like a champ! Good enough for now. Took anna for a drive to Target for pre-snow shopping, did more vacuum pulls along the way, she drives so nice! God I missed this car! |

Wahoo! Figured it out!!! I had put one thick, main ground just above the starter, when in fact it went below the starter. It was on the block, but the spot I put it on above the starter also held a small bracket (to hold the harness off the starter), and I had put the grounding wire on the outside of that--it must not conduct very well. I moved the ground to the correct spot (the manual actually has diagrammed where each one is), fired it up w/o maf to confirm it was working, then shut it off, plugged in maf, fired it up, voila!
Put my original rom back on there and she idles pretty nice right around 900rpm. I was super excited! Didn't spend the time to futz with it any more tonight, I'll play with it this week after the snow goes away. My back is just wrecked from all the shoveling so that turbo bolt will stay off for now. |

I attempted bolt #4 on the manifold-turbo with no luck, all but pulled the manifold off the car. I gave up, bolted it back down, it'll drive fine for a while longer. After shoveling for hours and hours and everything else I've done with the car, I'm just ready to drive the thing. Just going to continue to tweak and put some miles on it :D

The first 20 miles of driving need to be burnout miles. No joke, it's the only way to break in engines properly.
