Re: Evo X upgrades
Did you at least have your tubular manifold ceramic coated?

Re: Evo X upgrades

Re: Evo X upgrades
Whats wrong with the stock fluid? Are you really going to be pushing the car that hard? Racing/autox?

Re: Evo X upgrades
I think he is heading up to BIR.

My first time up at BIR I actually didn't use the brakes enough to experience fade...I drive like an old lady. That will probably change at some point this Summer, though. |

Not sure what you have done to your brakes, but mine at still 100% stock on my car. I will probably try to upgrade them before the next track day I attend. My car has only 14k on it so there is still some life in the pads/rotors. Would probably benefit greatly from some better ones though. |

With only 7k miles on the car there should be plenty of brake pad left on there. I intend to burn them up in the next couple of months and then I'll go to Girodisc rotors and DS2500's. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Ignorance bit me again. Valvoline put a quart too much oil in at the last change and I didn't know that being a little too full is very bad on turbo cars.
Swifty coated DB's dyno with coolant and very late last night my car covered it and my engine bay in oil. FML. Only got one pull in...said it did 350 at wastegate (21-22psi). |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Any damage?
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
Badass on power, just bad on the motor oil thing.
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
Oil can be cleaned, don't worry. Hopefully it's not indicative of a bigger problem.
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
You know what else is bad for turbo cars? Taking them to Valvoline.

He said that dialing in the ID2000's was a pita due to having fewer tables available so that took some time. It was 1am by the time Shane cleaned things up and drained some oil from the car. Quote:

Re: Evo X upgrades
You dont know how to read if the oil is over the level on the dipstick??
That sucks dude, hopefully the turbos ok. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Hopefully the turbo's fine and it's nothing more than spilled oil.

I guess we need to use less than book and have it between the lines when cold so that when hot it isn't too full. |

Re: Evo X upgrades
That was a good zing, gotta admit. :)

Re: Evo X upgrades
sucks man, good luck getting it all sorted out.
I think someone needs to invest in a jack? ignore the hate, it's just people feeling superior for whatever lame reason. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Welcome to DSMStyle!!! Where when you screw up, people let you know rather than giving you some sugar-coated response.
Just learn from it, take the comments for what they are and just move onwards and upwards! Just be glad no one has brought up flamadation valve issues to you yet :) Good luck and hopefully their is no real damage. |

The first thing I did, of course, is to Google the matter. The manual says 5 quarts. Valvoline used 5.1. Consensus on the forums is to use a little less, perhaps 4.8. Shane thought it was a quart over. It must have been due to heat expansion while on the dyno because 4.1qts would put it at the bottom of the fill line, I should think. It didn't pop the dipstick while I had it but I kept it under 5k rpms. |

Re: Evo X upgrades
Even if you put 5.5 quarts in it, I doubt that the turbo return line would be covered up, if it is, thats a crappy pan design. Filling it to the max is common so I dont know if thats the issue here.

Bummer...i was actually thinking of heading up to DB today to check the dyno tune out.
So is he putting the car back on today at all? |

BTW, how did the car lose the oil? |
Re: Evo X upgrades
The only time you would be able to get the factory capacity into an oil change is with a totally dry motor. Like a new build with a totally dry/clean oil pan, dry oil cooler, dry, oil cooler lines, etc. Most of the quick change oil places are also not going to let the oil drain for 15 mins either and try to get as much out, they will pull the plug, let it drain quick, throw the plug back in and then if they put in the factory oil system CAPACITY, then you might have too much. Too much oil can blow turbo seals, other engine seals, rod HP, etc. The turbo oil return lines are usually right at the oil level and it you unhook it with the car off, oil will drain out. With the car running the level will be a little lower and allow it to return ok. A little bit too much and the oil starts to back up into the return line.

Re: Evo X upgrades
So did the dipstick just blow out, and that is what covered things in oil? Blowing out a dipstick on these cars isn't the most uncommon thing ever.
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
Yea, it blew the dipstick and then a geyser of oil shot out. Kinda like a 4G63, but instead of a little spray, it was a fountain.

Geebus. I'm trying to imagine if that would have happened and you had you're cool little "knock headphones" on and your head down in the engine bay, and BOOM OLD FAITHFUL IN THE FACE!!! Man that woulda been rough!
