Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Tell us how it went swifty! Doesn't sound good, hopefully you got some baselines down at least.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
it revs to 9200 or more, if I so choose..not sure what to rev to.
Turbo is done. Fucked that shit up. Dunno what I'm gonna do. FMIC is too thin..heatsoaks. Prolly gonna sell it, and get a 5" or 6" think ETS core. Now you all can speculate, or shit talk some more. I'll let others fill in details as they soo wish..I don't really care to deal with or discuss anything right now. I'm just in awe at how much this fucking cunt of a car goes sometimes, but hey, it's the hobby and what we choose, right? I guess it could be worse. |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Sorry to hear. More info.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
KEEP YOUR CHIN UP!
You are sooo close! |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
that really sucks man! sorry to hear!!!!
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
oh yea, I also forgot..a looped line on the coolant t-stat housing (for the turbo feed/return if it was a bb) blew up, and shot coolant all over db's dyno room. Their walls are now dawned with the blood, sweat and coolant from myself/talon. Take that DB!
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Holy crap it revs! Get any WOT runs in? Any actual numbers?
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
He told me that is taking the turbo apart right now. Let us know what you find.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Seriously, WHO THE FUCK USES A 270 DEGREE THRUST BEARING FOR A TURBO THIS SIZE!?
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6866931_n.jpg http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs619...._5879087_n.jpg http://hphotos-sjc1.fbcdn.net/hs659...._2510145_n.jpg http://hphotos-sjc1.fbcdn.net/hs619...._7773765_n.jpg Since the pics are not quite clear, comp wheel is done, backing plate is ground away/done, comp cover..done. Thrust bearing had too much in/out shaft play, wore away, had more play, then the turbo comp wheel sucked itself straight into the comp cover. Everything is fucked. Turbo is now an expensive paperweight, till I figure what the fuck to do. |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
F*ck that.. At least you can rev it to the moon now!
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Hopefully the shop you bought it from can do something for you, like a new one.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
shitty to hear
for sure keep your chin high! |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Sorry to hear about the turbo. Look on Supra forums or something for a billet 67 or another 4294.
~John |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
The company or person that put that turbo together isnt smart enough to realise that compressor wheel puts way too much thrust load on that 270 degree thrust bearing setup.
Swifty had no heat marks on the turbine shaft which would signify lack of lubrication. Builder is at fault. http://www.turbodynamics.co.uk/turbo_repair.htm Nice little paragraph on the differances if you scroll down. |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Nice meeting you today, sadly in unfortunate circumstances.
We had a couple issues also that will end up having me pull the engine out of the car for a few tweaks. |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Thanks guys. Thanks Chad with the turbo help an such. John, no idea what I'll do but I want to get the same thing. The guy I got it from usually orders them through another company for his customers. He had ordered 2 for his customer who then flaked out on hu project (galant vr4) and so he ha this to get rid of, hence the deal I supposedly got. He's running one of these on his "beater" 2g and he's going to pull it today to see if it's a 360 degree thrust bearing. He doesn't think that would matter, but then again he's not a specialist or deisel tech whom deals with turbos all day.
Funky, first fuel, and now what!? Horse shit day. Iguess what I say about going to DB or any other shop to dyno I'd like the dentist afterall-anxiety, and not a guarentee you'll walk out all smiles. |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
I cringed when I heard this! Blows balls, hopefully the shop you got it from won't bitch out and do something to help out. That's an expensive fuck up on their part.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Sucks to hear Swifty, hopefully the shop is able to take care of you.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Comp wheel, aluminum backing plate, comp cover all ground into/trashed. Anyone know of a shop that can get parts? Or take the comp cover, weld it, then turn I on a lathe to get it back in spec?
It's shitty when you spend a lot of money to dyno, just to have something out of your hands fail you, and you are out that money, plus the money for the turbo, plus towing all the way back to my place in savage, if that's why's needed. I BETTER get something out of this. |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Sorry to hear about this man, its never fun having more downtime:( Hopefully you get it sorted out, good luck!
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
that is really shitty.
see what diesel componits can do with it. you should have called me we could have got the car back to your place |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Good luck, buddy. Hopefully you'll have some good karma come your way.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Just take it to diesel components man, have them fix it, and send the guy you bought it from the bill (unless it was from oil starvation or something). Don't fuck around, just do it right.
Sorry dude. |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Glad it's only the turbo, I'd really like to hear what it did before it gave out, but you must have been making some boost for it to go out like that, so cheer up and let us know!
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Apparently it did like 454 or something on a half pull at 28psi before it blew.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Keep your head up, youll get the shit figured out! Youre sooo close!
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
That sucks man, wasn't a good day for anybody at DB yesterday, first your turbo poops out, then the Supra has problems. :(

Drained the oil and it has some very fine metal particulate in it.... So now I am going to pull the engine and check clearances and wear patterns on the bearings. Hopefully we caught everything in time I can just whammy new bearings in there and use some better oil. Shit happens I suppose. -Sean |
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Good luck to you both.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
shitty man. everything happens for a reason and good thing it wasn't your engine that failed on you. good luck man.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Well, sat around at work today, and called the company out in FL that the turbo came from. I guess other's he's done has a 360 thrust bearing in it, but not mine. So, he said send it back, and he will honor his turbo, fix it, and have it back to me within a week. I MIGHT even get a billet wheel outta it too! We shall see. Either way, Turbo goes tomorrow headed to FL.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Sucks to hear it blew up, but I'm glad to hear they're gonna make it right for you.
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
agree'd, lets hope you get some quick turn around
|
Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Sweet shit, good to hear that they are helping out.
|

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!
Obviously the Wednesday delivery. Unless time is worth more than money to you... Might want to try USPS also.
