Surprized they are digging the foundation while its this cold out, wont they have problems getting the concrete to cure?

That's what the blankets are for. ;)

Concrete guys always work year round. People don't just stop building in the winter.

Just takes longer, the biggest issue is those frost chunks of dirt. Dont let them backfill the house with that crap or it will settle like crazy.

Re: House Projects

They started digging ours early march last year when it was cold out and snow on the ground too. They can dig pretty much anytime is what they told me. Concrete they said there was a min temp they want to be above to pour, but that min temp was still pretty low.

Re: House Projects

Yea hopefully it should fine. I mean they have built about 3-4 since December. They just need to hurry up! What have some have you guys done for landscaping? Seems spendy to sod or hydroseeding.

Halon 03-19-2013 08:58 PM

Re: House Projects

We did sod, 1 retaining wall (had to), 1 tree in the front yard (had to), and then just river rock around the perimeter of the house.

Sounds like a lot of people are getting the house building/buying itch this year. My house closes this Friday and I'll be soon starting the build of our new house in Nowthen. 1200 sq foot garage and a 40 x 80 foot pole shed!!! W00t!

later,
Curt

Well went up to our lot last Friday and was surprised at how far they were and starting to put the block in. Then went back today and there was a house starting to take shape. Garage and master bedroom seem to be coming along nicely! The bedroom is above the garage so its nice and big! Went out and started to pick out some lighting stuff and got all the appliances picked out and same with all the colors of paint and carpet and all that fun stuff. Hoping that way they wouldn't have to be waiting around on us for anything.

Nice loft above the garage!

Out townhome was on the market for 8 days before it sold, closing here in mid may. We will find out if our offer is accepted on the house we looked at hopefully tomorrow morning!

Of course the house shuffle puts the project off for another year, but at least the stealth should have a 3rd stall garage for a comfortable sleep until 2014.

A few weeks ago I built a work bench for the garage. It's 8 feet long and 30 inches wide. The bottom shelf is 18 inches wide. It's nice to have a garage big enough to park my car inside and have enough room to work on the bike infront of it and still have the door closed.

Our furnace room was getting cramped, full of misc boxes we've never got around to unpacking. So did a lil thrifting and found a deal on Craigslist for a pair of 8ft wide shelves from the old Blaine Dodge dealership. Furnace room looks 100 times better now!

Re: House Projects

Decided to redo the entry way flooring and the upstairs two bedrooms while im at it, new carpet in both rooms as well as nice stone looking vinyl in the entry. Easier to clean up and dont want to deal with tile there. Cant wait till its all done in a couple weeks.

Also decided to rip out the balusters on our railing to finish the wood flooring in the living room, thats all thats left besides moldings. Waiting on menards to send me square balusters instead of the twirly old fashioned ones that houses seem to come with these days.

Painted our basement and added a little trim to separate the theater from the pool/bar area. Finally installed my seamless gutters. New carpet in the hallway and living room upstairs and down the stairs to the basement. Last week did new laminate granite appearing countertop and was up til 1am this morning installing the mosaic tile backsplash. Next is to wrap up my bar project using the old center island countertop with scrap lumber my $50 bar project. ;)

Not really much of a project, but figured I'd share anyway some of the rooms we've setup now with some new furniture we got on uber sale.

We had thought about getting a built in sort of setup for the TV upstairs when we built, but decided against it. So instead we got a 20% off coupon in the mail and got this instead. It was already on clearance, plus the 20% off coupon, not to bad I think.
http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1365704989

Also got our sunroom all setup finally. Been waiting to find a nice outdoorsy furniture setup to put in there. These were on sale at Menards, plus the 11% off rebate.

And we finally got the bird feeders out, and found some evidence of visitors. We see tracks for ducks, deer, and squirrels :)

Re: House Projects

We are really going all out on the finishing our basement now. We are adding a bedroom, bathroom, wet bar, sewing room, workout room, seating counter and family room with fireplace which will be wired for home theater.

Bedroom is framed in except for the front closet wall, going to work on that tonight. Bathroom is framed in completely. Sewing room is well under way and we got all the crap out of down there so it is easier to work. Electrician was in today and got started doing some wiring. We are putting a subpanel in my shop from the main service directly above in the garage.

Bedroom on the right, bathroom on the left.

Re: House Projects

Sewing room almost all framed in. Hard to capture it in a picture because it goes in at a 45 on the left side, then turns straight in and meets the back wall. Double french doors going in the front opening. Need to pop the studs in the back wall tomorrow and get the short wall on the right framed in. Didn't get to the closet in the BR tonight either.

Re: House Projects

Redid our fireplace mantle and TV setup. We went with mosaic Carrara Marble tile for the wall, a slab of Carrara Marble tile for the floor in front of the fireplace, and the mantle is a solid piece of Maple, 8" deep and 4" tall, with 7 coats of polyurethane. We obviously mounted the TV, added an HDMI outlet box and power box in the wall behind the TV so all the wires are hidden, then ran AudioQuest HDMI cable through the wall and into another HDMI outlet right behind the cable box on the right.

Scored a new fridge off CL a few weeks back. Spent a few hours cleaning it up, brought it downstairs, plugged it in, seems to work perfect so far. Fridge stays cool, and freezer freezes ice. It is missing some shelves/drawers, but hey free is free!

That cleaned up real good!

Re: House Projects

We spent the long weekend with the help of some friends redoing the flooring in the upstairs living room. It was the last of the old carpet, also took out the bench that just accumulates stuff, to provide more room in the entry way and then we'll put in new bench on part of it. We tiled it with the same tile that is in our kitchen and bathroom, and got a killer deal on a returned in floor heat kit at menards.... on to the pics!

After getting the scratch coat over the heat all smoothed out and all the tools cleaned... one of the cats made it over the make shift barrier, and was not happy with himself after, neither were we. I made it there before he got back out and tracked it anywhere. We gave him a bath, and he was not happy.

Still need to do some insulation and drywall work on that front wall, and get the trim all finished up but the big job is done!
