Re: My Talon

Ouch! I'd say that turbo is pretty much toast.

Re: My Talon

I've seen worse damage than that on Holsets and my brother was still able to rebuild them at the diesel shop he works at.

Re: My Talon

Haha, well the feedline fitting that screws into the center section came loose. I'm sure because the turbo had very little oil flow and almost no pressure as I was making a pull everything got hot, the shaft seized/broke, and the turbine wheel went crazy. It also tore up the BEP housing I have...

So I will see about getting the turbo rebuilt, if it's possible. It that works, I'll try my best to clean up the turbine housing with a die grinder and hope it works half-assed.

This isn't anything about the turbo being unreliable. I'd get a Holset again.

I might look into a PTE as a cheaper alternative IF I cannot repair this turbo.

Re: My Talon

OUCH!

You can get a wh1e to bolt into your hx40 turbine housing. It has a 58mm 8blade compressor. Or just a standard 8blade 58mm inducer hx40. You don't need that 7blade or 6blade 60mm wheel. Not remotely for your horsepower. 8blade hx40, 535whp on a dynapack and 139mph with 2760lb race weight: Click. You have another 100hp to go before you should wonder about having the 60mm wheel. That could save you some $$$.

. . . Research holset fakes if you decide to get another holset. There's chinabay fake hx40s floating around. There's a thread on tuners about it. The word holset in the same font on the id plate that looks like a holset plate on the compressor cover and all. "xs power" pops up when you move the mouse over the pic. . .But You can spot the difference easily if you know what your'e lookign for. Holset is even pressing the issue with the authorities. Just a heads up if you're looking on ebay for a real holset.

Here's the thread. Click.

Re: My Talon

I dropped it off at a local diesel shop. I even called a few places, pretty much everyone said I'll need a new center cartridge, if they can even ID the current one. Should be about, oh, $600... :( Booo.

All I know is that this is a 6-blade comp, 12 blade turbine, I got it brand new as just a HX40 for a DSM. Apprently there should be some part numbers on the back side of the compressor wheel, and they will hopefully try and match up that wheel with a new center section. I'd like to keep the 69lb/min comp wheel if possible. I won't be a stock 2.0L forever ;)

Wheelhop do you know any part numbers for my 6 blade hx40?

Also, my turbine housing is a little messed up, guess I'll have to whip out the dremel!

Oh, and BEP housing for the lose: The bolt holes not tapped all the way through, my hardened steel turbo bolts missing 1/3 of their threads and a pain to remove.

Re: My Talon

Or I'll just buy a new one lol cause I'm an idiot. or some lame PTE lol. :p

Re: My Talon

Did you try East Central Diesel up in Cambridge? My brother works up there and they do pretty damn good work.

hx40 compresso part numbers

There are VERY few hx40s out there with the 6blade wheel from the factory. They usually come with the slightly faster spooling and slightly lower flowing 10blade hx40 turbine (will bolt right into any hx40 cut turbine housing).

Re: My Talon

Ok. So I brought my turbo to diesel components, and I'm extremely happy I did.

After looking at the turbo, it wasn't lack of oil that caused the failure, but a turbine blade broke off and sent everything to shit. Diesel Components had a matching turbine blade in stock, and it was the same. They normally stock the CHRA I need but they were out and one should be in next week! I'm kinda pissed, kinda not, about the turbine blade. They said they have seen it happen before...

Halon 05-08-2009 04:24 PM

Re: My Talon

I wonder how they determine that. Wouldn't a catastrophic failure of the Center Section destroy a turbine blade?

Glad to hear you're getting it worked out. Come to the track!!
