when I got the mls for alys car it was around 120 with the discount now. so I am done with them and just will get the perma's from craig since I get his price on it.

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 11:22 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

MAP doesn't have the MLS in stock, and even so, it's $130. It looks like I'll be going with the permatorque.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Call Craig, do work.

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 11:25 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Get me a cost. Otherwise, I'll just do it through MAP.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

I'm not at work all day today, that's why I said to call Craig. Or call the store, 763-566-1274.

Fixed.

Mitsu MLS with no spray gets my vote. Evo's stock head gasket is MLS and none of us recently have used copper spray and they've held just fine.

Do you ever read what people write or just part of it? lol I never said anything about permatorque's being bad.

anyone copperspray permatorques? I hear it's in a sealed package that is already tacky?

Yep, I would never spray a PermaTorque

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

I wouldn't spray a headgasket period. Just make sure both surfaces are as clean as possible. If the gasket is gonna seal, it will seal.

I am always a fan of that, and since it will be torn apart shortly, I just might do that water pipe o-ring.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

You can't compare the Evo MLS to the DSM one, nor the head rigidity between a DSM head and an Evo head.

I would run the Permatorque, and don't copper spray it. Copper spray is not going to do shit for holding in it 2500psi of cylinder pressure.

If I get nothing but people finger pointing, then I won't ever update this thread again, and you all can go read some other shit. No skin off my ass. Shit happens sometimes, oh well! It will be fixed when I can fix it. Big fucking deal.

Its ok swifty. I do recall the conversation but it was more of a pondering as to whether to reuse or not to. which he came to the conclusion that he would not be reusing. I am reusing mine, and i will post up the compression tester results and we can compare. But i have always reused my metal head gaskets, never taken out the rivets though that seems pretty extreme. Maybe next time ring the block and head and not have to worry about expensive head gaskets.
Speaking of which have you done a compression test?

This thread is full of fail. I don't see the point to trying to be a cheapass and save a few bucks when it risks having the rip the head off again, buy a new gasket anyway, plus all the additional stress, headache, and downtime.

Plus headstuds, or any studs for that matter dont like to be stretched 50 times...

I just palmed face so hard I am now bleeding and partially blind. You have got to be joking. Please tell me you are.

Compression test isn't going to prove jack shit unless you absolutely fucked up the head installation or the gasket is severely messed up. When the cylinder fires it puts more pressure on the head gasket than just cranking the engine over will ever do.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Buy a permatorque and be done with it. You've spent so much on everything else, AN radiator hoses, baller top mount, 42 sized turbo, etc. Just spend that little extra bit on a permatorque and know its going to last.

Pushing coolant is not fun, as most of us know. Do it once, do it right.

Jeez, give the guy a break. I would've used a headgasket I had sitting around too, why spend the money if you don't have to. He didn't reuse a gasket, he used a new one, that just so happened to fail due to other circumstances. OH WELL!! Ya live and ya learn, and now swifty knows. Don't see the point in cluttering up a project thread with pointless nagging, when I'm pretty sure swifty knows perfectly well that he messed up. The more important thing is, that hes gonna fix it, and fix it right this time (don't make me eat my own words swifty lol). Get yourself a permatorque, pull the head off (which I'm guessing doesn't take forever, seeing as you have done it more than a couple times), slap that bish back together, and enjoy it!

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Mowed the lawn, weedwacked, and etc. Then, pulled the engine apart, tore out the old POS cometic, hung it on the wall, and cleaned both block and head really well. While I was in there, I got some brake cleaner on a rag, and wiped down teh pistons really well, and got rid of all the carbon buildup that was there from before. Got a felpro permatorque, NO COPPER SPRAY, slapped it on there, and on went the head, along with misc etc. Also got the lower ic pipe to sit a bit better, and the comp cover a bit more rotated away from my radiator, so now I feel a bit better. Car is now done, and will fire up tomorrow morning (don't wanna piss the neighbors off right now). Torn, fixed, all in a day. Easy enough of a problem to fix ;)

Pulling the head becomes pretty easy after a few times. I can do mine blindfolded by now, haha. Hopefully I never have to see it again though, haha. O-rings for winning.

123, I wasn't the one who even cared or started a build thread. Our trusty, fearless leader, flips McGee decided to start this for me. And, being the cool person I am, others like to hate. So, hence the bashing, and pages of useless material.
