pft, I don't care..just shoot me a text later. I dunno if the neighbors would like me setting timing once the car is warmed up after midnight, but ya..lol

Warmed it up, coolant bled. Pulled the Valvecover and retorqued the A1's, made the screen for the turbo, re-assembled, drove around the block/neighborhood, made this video, then parked it. Oh, after mounting the oil cooler.

MINE TOO! Pearl white w/ blue pearl, please.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Turns out after driving even more today (almost a 1/8-1/4 tank) it's leaking coolant, seemingly from the timing side area. Plugs are dry, and coolant pressure tester held 13.5 psi for a decent time, and didn't reveal any leaks, so it must be under cylinder pressure. I am thinking i'll need a new HG, and therefore..frick! Oh well, what can ya do. Prolly happened when I dropped the head down, but then had to pull it back up when I couldn't get the washers over the studs. Damn myself.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Dont be hasty, run it again when I give you back your C.O.P. setup tommrow.

I think I jinxed you when I said your head will lift ten feet

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 01:33 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

I just am at awe at events that unfold. I know, HG..not a big deal. Just kinda..suprised it's soo soon. Then again, what's to say it's not the waterpump leaking? It's all in that same area. Could be running along the side of the block/head. I'll run it again I guess once you bring back the cop setup, and see. Perhaps if you come soon enough before work, and I don't work tomorrow, we can just stare at it together and let it idle, since you wanted me to start it tonight to hear it at fricken 12:20 am!

Did you really reuse your HG after all that? If you did : sigh :....

Yep he did, and thats why its crap now. Fail swifty, I told you not to do that.

Kracka 04-28-2010 10:22 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

As did I if I recall correctly. Reusing a head gasket is something not even a hillbilly newb would do.

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 10:30 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

For the last goddamn time. I did not reuse my fucking gasket. I got a cometic HP, but drilled out 3 of the 4 rivets, coppersprayed all 4 parts, let sit overnight, then re-assembled, put back on the car, then slapped the head on, only to need to lift it off a bit to get the washers on..THAT's where I went wrong. If I get nothing but people finger pointing, then I won't ever update this thread again, and you all can go read some other shit. No skin off my ass. Shit happens sometimes, oh well! It will be fixed when I can fix it. Big fucking deal.

Why? I'd be willing to bet that has the potential to cause more issues than prevent any.

scheides 04-28-2010 10:41 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Or was it a new gasket that may have gotten mashed while dropping the head down? I had the same thing happen when I put my L19's on, the washers are so damn thick!

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 10:43 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

I heard that it's worked for others in the past to hold higher cylinder pressure, and at the time I was NOT keen on dropping 200 fricken' dollars on a damn gasket. But, whatever. I am looking at my options..I have A1's. I guess it's either a Mitsu MLS or a felpro. But, it's a matter of cost difference vs. holding strength. Pros and Cons for each, and it seems everyone is all having different luck.

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 10:44 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

I did mash it. For all I know it could also have been damaged sitting in the bottom drawer of my toolbox, with all the other shit I've tossed onto it..air tools, brake cleaner sprayer thing, scan tool, etc. Who knows. It's dumb, but in a way, I kinda wanna time how long it takes to swap the HG. Just not excited about the cost of a new hg, oil, coolant, etc.

A//// Guy 04-28-2010 10:53 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

You told me you were reusing your old one and spraying it up with copper spray. Did you mention anywhere in this thread that you got a new one? Not that I can remember....

Sorry swifty, you've wholeheartedly deserved this:

I've got an old cracked act 2600 PP and my stock evo disc laying around, you wanna toss them in there while you're at it?

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Mitsu metal and be done with it ( I've had one in my car for over a year at 530awhp, and never pushed any coolant). Cost is like $100. Cometic head gaskets SUCK!

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 10:57 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Peter, I said I was THINKING. Then I remembered I had bought 2 because I thought the first time around It was the wrong bore size/gasket..turns out it was right, and I used that one..that was back with the scm61. I found this one, and thought..hmm..how could I make it better? I tried this idea, it must not have worked. Plain and simple.

Scheides, I don't even wanna know how many times you failed..how many HG's you gone through? I know your car needs a hg right now! ;)

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 10:59 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

The thing that I ponder..is why is everyone on this felpro permatorque gasket bandwagon? Yea, it's a good gasket..good for it. What was everyone using BEFORE this came out? eh? And, did it not work for all the other DSMers out there for MANY MANY years? I guess marketing is really that powerful..

Kracka 04-28-2010 11:05 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Stock or Mitsu MLS.

The permatorque gasket is a multi layer gasket just like the mitsu metal's but, mitsu metal's weren't made for 2.4lt guys. I had a commetic HP in my car (when I had my 2.4) with a 61 on it and blew the shit out of the gasket many time's. The other reason why thing's are so much better now are the head stud's are holding that head down much better then the standard old arp's ever did!

My car will never see a HG ever again :(

But, when the head came off, I always used a NEW one, and was careful not to damage it :)

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

True, making me wonder..maybe I'll rock a mitsu MLS, and swap that bitch out..later?

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 11:10 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Scheides, I didn't think I could damage it by having it in the bottom of a drawer on my toolbox (literally bottom..I could show you the shit I found when I cleaned it out!). I am not saying that it was or wasn't the reason..could also been what I did to it with the washer incident. Who knows. All I know is it's time for a new one.

swap what out later?

ps make sure its not your water pump like you said.

scheides 04-28-2010 11:12 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

+1 on the water pump, unless you didn't touch that? Still.

+2 or 3 on Mitsu MLS gasket. They're like $60.

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 11:12 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Swap out the gasket for another, un beaten, unsprayed gasket.

I am still curious on that. I guess if it isn't fixed with a hg, I'll do the water pump gasket..I know I should sometime do the o-ring on the water pipe as it's been a long time since it was replaced, and over winter when it's cold, it leaks. Seems to be fine now though. If it ain't broke..why fix it?

Swifty1638 04-28-2010 11:13 AM

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

look up a mitus mls gasket cost..it's gone up. much more. It sucks.

Whats wrong with the permatorque's? I have yet to hear of one failing yet. (Except on Rau's car.)
