Re: My Winter Upgrades
OK, got my appointment for just 3 pulls at MAP for tomorrow at 3:30 :)
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
^ in a way, I think it helps put slightly more perspective on things. Some people never dyno at DB, or LSE back in the day, to know just how different these two dyno's are. So, for those whom are strictly MAP dyno-type, this will show em.

Re: My Winter Upgrades
Exactly. It does get a little bit annoying when people tell you that you should have made way more. Then you tell them the dyno reads low, they shrug it off as an excuse. Hopefully this will just be a little more proof. Ideally I should have done both dynos in the same night, but oh well.

Re: My Winter Upgrades
I was going to actually, but we ran late last night. So, here's how I came up with stuff..Andrew told me his car make exactly 18% more on both power and torque. I asked Shane what MAra's car made..480..and remember, 563 at map. Hill got just over 500 on db, 589 at map..everything seems to point at 18%..so, I expect 630's from your car tomorrow son!

Re: My Winter Upgrades
Car wasn't running too well last night. Today I went and checked the gap on all my plugs. They were all still at .020. I decided to bump them down to .018. I also left my spark plug cover off after I regapped the plugs. Took the car for a spin and it's running beautiful.
I'm not sure yet, but the issues I had last night I'm thinking may be 1 or 2 of these things: 1) Cold weather making me run lean 2) Plugs needed to be gapped smaller 3) Spark Plug cover squishing the wires too close together. Those were really the only 3 things that changed from last night and this morning, and the car is running good now. I'm going to leave the spark plug cover off for awhile and see if the issue ever comes back. If it does come back, then I'm thinking it may be the cold weather. If the problem doesn't come back, I think I'll put it back on and see if it comes back as soon as I put it back on. I'm hopping on MAP's dyno in 2hrs to get a good Dyno Dynamics vs Dyno Jet comparison. |

Well did my 3 pulls at MAP today. I saw a 16% difference in the 2 dynos. Also, mine is still miss-firing, but it revved cleanly to the point where it was making max power anyway. So you'll notice the graph only goes to 7k, because that's where I started missfiring.
So the guesstimate of about 15-18% sounds about right on. |
Re: My Winter Upgrades
Very interesting, I always wondered how the spool would be different on the 2 different types of dyno's on a higher hp car. Looks like the DD spools about 200 rpm sooner because it puts more load on the engine. Nice job brandon!

Re: My Winter Upgrades
Nice! So now do you tell people it makes 628 or 541?
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
Damn that is a huge difference.. More than I thought!
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
You tell people 628. No questions about it.
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
All that work paid off B!! Niiice power, ill be needing a ride and ill supply my own diaper as well.

Re: My Winter Upgrades
edit: jk, read what you wrote.
Did Anthony's car curse pass on over to you so you also cannot rev anymore? :-o |
Re: My Winter Upgrades
I'm going to consider it at 541 for the most part, because that is the dyno I plan on returning to mostly in the future. But if someone thinks it's a weak number because it's lower then what they expected, then I can pull this one out for comparisson.
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
I would just tell them to come and see how weak 541 is. But incase they wanted to know its about 600 DJ.

Re: My Winter Upgrades
Well since I seem to be pushing coolant a little bit, I ordered up a set of L19's. They should be here Monday. I'm not installing them right away, but just want to have them on hand for when the next time the head comes off, I can just slap them right in.
Also, after a lot of thought and IM conversations, I purchased a new ETS FMIC :) I got their Race core which is supposed to be good up to 980 CFM, which is about 100 more then I'm currently pushing. Also been doing a lot of research regarding ignition amplifiers. At this point, I have no clue which one to get. |
Re: My Winter Upgrades
Well to battle my miss-firing issues, I threw in some brand new BPR6ES's in. Car was miss-firing worse then ever. Cranked the boost down WG pressure, still bucking... OH SHIT what's that, the gas light? DOH!!! Filled it up with gas. Car is running great, no miss-firing. I only got it up to 25psi so far as I was slowly upping the boost to ensure it's running ok at lower boost levels. Tomorrow I'll keep cranking it up, hopefully to 35 again and have no miss-firing issues. If I do, I'll just turn it down to the highest level I can where it doesn't miss-fire.
Annoying... |
Re: My Winter Upgrades
haha Paying attention to the gas gauge = win.
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
My gas gauge stops going down at about 1/3 or so. The dual pumps get in the way of the Float I think. But the gas light still works, but it's sorta blocked by my boost gauge.
Anyhow, I cranked it up a little over lunch today, and I'm at 30psi now and no miss-firing. I'll crank it up a little bit more after lunch and hope for the best :) |
Re: My Winter Upgrades
lol, I hope for the best too. Don't blow it before I get that ride! :D

Re: My Winter Upgrades
I finally got a ride in this beast over the weekend! Big turbo fun woot! Under 5k the car seems very nice and tame. As soon as you cross over 5k zzzzzoomg woot! Pulls nice and hard up to 8k. Definitely a fast car! I can't wait to give the little blue a run against this, down on power or not! :D
Also, props to brandon for a nice, clean, good running 1G. Very nice car dude, I really really like what you've done with it. |

Re: My Winter Upgrades
Thanks Scheides!!
I was extremely happy with how well it ran, and how it never overheated. I think the cool weather was partially responsible though. But considering how hard I beat on it this weekend, at 30psi, I am really happy with how well it held together (other then the tire issue after getting some air at a pretty high rate of speed). I just need to get the coolant pushing issue worked out. Other then that, man it ran like a champ, never had a single issue with it the whole time!! |

Re: My Winter Upgrades
Ha!
OK well the new front mount should be here early next week. The L19 headstuds arrived and are sitting in the garage. One of these days when it looks like we're going to have a lot of rain, I think I'm going to take the head off, and go have the surface remachined. The shop that did it was pretty cheap and not sure how good of a machine job they did on it. Hopefully having it resurfaced will make it smoother, and that combined with the new L19's will hopefully take care of my "pushing coolant" issues. |
Re: My Winter Upgrades

I had a freshly decked head, with a copper sprayed (lol) OEM metal HG that pushed coolant. |
Re: My Winter Upgrades
Considering the whole new block has maybe 10k on it, I'd hope it's fairly flat. I would expect the head would warp well before the block would. I will check it though when I pull the head. My roommate has one of those "certified straight edge's" up in his room that I could use.
And if my block isn't perfectly flat, well right now there really isn't much I can do about that. I'm not pulling it out. (waiting for a "that's what she said" remark) |
Re: My Winter Upgrades
Yea I'm guessing that head was fairly warped. I blew the headgasket on it and still drove it a few times because I was a dumbass noob at the time, plus it overheated a few times before all that happened. It got to at least 260-270 probably half a dozen times.

Re: My Winter Upgrades
Brandon, what clutch setup are you running?
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
Stock Flywheel, Fidanza 4.3 clutch.
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
Very light Light cuts on the head. Sometimes by pushing coolant it isn't a non-flat head, but more of the head material compressing and allowing coolant to flow by. The lack of aluminum in my head is what caused my heads to "lift" and push coolant on the stealth in 2005-2006. The higher tensile strength headstuds should help keep it down as well.
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
I didn't completely follow those first two sentances. Are you saying I should put very light cuts on my head?
|
Re: My Winter Upgrades
I'm guessing no. lol. I think he means when you have heads resurfaced a bunch it takes away metal that would otherwise contribute to rigidity.
By very very light, he means take off as little as possible. |

Re: My Winter Upgrades
Well the car decided to leave me stranded on Hwy 96 today. I was sitting there waiting to make a right turn, just idling, and it shut off on me.
Huge thanks to Nick (munchgsx) for coming and towing her home for me. Car is turning over great, sounds like it has heathy compression, but won't fire up. Won't even come close to firing up, just cranks and cranks. My first thought was it wasn't getting fuel. So while sitting on the shoulder, I checked the ignition and MPI fuses. Both checked out good. I turned the fuel pump on via DSMLink, checked the fuel pressure and it was good, and I could feel the fuel running through the lines. So there went that theory. Got her towed home, and decided to check if I was getting spark. Kinda hard to do with just me and no helper. I unplugged the wires from the plugs, and set them right next to grounded parts of the car, figuring that when I cranked it over, if I have spark I'd hear some arcing. Well, I didn't hear a damn thing. So right now, it's looking like I lost my spark, somehow... I'll have to find someone to help me to verify that though. I'm thinking somehow either my coilpack or transistor died. Which might go hand in hand with my intermittent missfiring I was running into. Put up a WTB add, so if anyone has a transistor, or coil pack, that I can borrow to see if it fixes the issue. please let me know ASAP!!!!! |
