Nice, I put the timing belt on mine last night, just have to hook everything else up and replace the rear caliper. I'm getting excited to start mine as well, I know it'll all be worth it when I turn the key.

Funny man you are Paul.

I thought I posted it was my starter from the night before.

Now to look up some track days!

lol, went to take it for a test spin and fail. Car is stuck in 3rd.
Not sure why yet obviously. But if anyone has a TCU I can try out it would be much appreciated. Mine looks ok, but well something is up.

Would a 2G TCU work?

turbotalon1g 08-15-2012 12:57 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

I checked the TCU codes this am, it was a 83 - open/short-circuited shift solenoid A.

So it's not looking like its the TCU, but now I just need to figure out how to test the solenoids.
How many plugs does it have? mine is the 3 plug TCU. I know some are 2 plug.

No idea, I just think I might have a 2G TCU somewhere here at the shop. Would have to look for it.

Ah, don't bother, at least not yet. Everything is pointing to something unplugged or solenoid taking a shit.

Hmm 3 speed? Less gears to shift = faster right?

Turn the motor, 2 speed powerglide. Oh wait, Buschur did that in the 90s.

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

The solenoid only have one 4-wire plug and are very easy to ohm. Check out Kigglys site and match the wire colors, I believe a is yellow and b is orange. Its the single four pin plug that goes into the front of the transmission.

munchgsx 08-15-2012 03:22 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

I think I still have a solenoid too.

SOld. VB is out of the car, I'm failing somewhere testing it though.

turbotalon1g 08-16-2012 01:49 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

So far everything points to the shift solenoid A being bad, I picked up some replacements that ohm'd out good so hopefully this will do the trick.

I also increased my pressures manually since I had the VB out, sadly the trans fluid was pretty dirty and did have some debris in the pan.
Looks like this winter I may have to send out the trans to get built instead of a motor. :(

Also no-one appears to stock the pan gasket I need so I'm updating this instead of testing the new solenoids.

RTV is your friend in times like this.

turbotalon1g 08-16-2012 02:20 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

No thanks, I'll either do it late tonight or get up early and do it in the am. I'd rather do it right. OF course unless anyone in here has RTV'd their transmission pans in a upped pressured car.

blackrosenova400 08-16-2012 02:29 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

Upped control pressure should not pressurize the trans case, just the control main used for your hydraulic circuits.

Ultra grey would work fine if it was allowed to be cured, but I think the trans does use a gasket from the factory.

I use full main pressure after 9 psi of boost, but I am using a gasket.

Murlo26 08-16-2012 03:02 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

New Evo's don't even use oil pan gaskets, its all RTV...but I am not sure the pressure seen there vs a trans one.

blackrosenova400 08-16-2012 03:12 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

The only way the transmission pan will see pressure is if the breather is plugged while the fluid heats up.

munchgsx 08-16-2012 03:41 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

If I see RTV on that pan I'm gonna kick you. Buy a filter it comes with a gasket.

carltalon 08-16-2012 04:03 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

I used black oil resistant RTV on both of my transmission pans with no problems. None of my local parts stores ever had gaskets in stock.

A//// Guy 08-16-2012 04:06 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

Lol you guys are silly. RTV seals better than a gasket IMO.

munchgsx 08-16-2012 04:08 PM

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

Comes from the factory with a gasket, should remain a gasket.

Tell that to human trannys.

Is it trannys or trannies?
