Chances are I'll get a pretty vanilla, proven setup in there for years of continued fun. Quote:

Oh, a few days later (after I had noticed it starting to run worse) just AFTER part throttle boost on decel (in gear) the car would let out a short but very noticable billow of blue/black smoke. That's when I knew for sure something was amiss. |

I call built motor set for 600+ and you end up at the 500 mark. Good luck man. |
Re: beaterX project thread
Holy crap, shitty dude! What is the plan? built motor?
EDIT: Whoops, I didn't read the whole thread. |
Re: beaterX project thread
I'm glad you were able to get your hands on a boroscope to confirm what we saw on the compression test. Could have done without the scored cylinder wall...
In all fairness, I put the pedal down a handful of times on that 91 octane gas and my car never knocked. Power is a nice thing, but a safe tune is even better. |
Re: beaterX project thread
That sucks!! Best of luck getting it fixed and up and going again!!
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Dude that sucks! I was hoping it would be something easy when you had said your compression results.... What do you have planned? Need a beer?
|
Re: beaterX project thread
That sucks Scheides! Hope you get it back on the road soon :(
On a note with that Superior BP gas, I was knocking like crazy after filling up there. Had to lower my boost to spring pressure on the wastegate just to floor it and was still getting some knock. Ran it close to empty and then filled up with some local 92 octane and was boosting great again at 22 psi. |
Re: beaterX project thread
I was telling him earlier to do a 4G swap. That's pretty vanilla and proven, right?
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Wow that is major suck. :(
What was compression when you bought it this summer? Any idea what caused this? I cant imagine a shitty tune causing scored cylinder walls. Very odd. |
Re: beaterX project thread
If you look closely at the pic of the piston, you can see that it's damaged along the left hand bottom corner of the frame.

My goal is to get the head off and verify the boroscope findings this week, then pull everything else this coming weekend (after I recover from Mark's party--friday night). So if you're bored next saturday or sunday and want to get dirty, feel free to stop by. Beer provided after you smash your first fingernail or knuckle :D |
Re: beaterX project thread
Ask Anna if I can chew in the garage this weekend?
|
Re: beaterX project thread
I wanna see!
For when I blow my next motor up, lol. Next time I am doing it myself...no money for another one, lol. But really, I will come be moral support and do what I can. I'd like to help with getting the head off to, text me. I need to figure out that stuff or at least see what its like. |
Re: beaterX project thread
Shoot me a txt on what time your gonna start man I am there.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Did you by chance wash down the cyl walls with too much fuel?
|
Re: beaterX project thread
perhaps the previous owner did, I'm not sure. From the day I got it it ran anywhere from 11-12:1 afr, I logged it regularly.

Re: beaterX project thread
Time to get rollin. Dinner, drinks, and pool party with the in-laws tonight so I only got about an hour in on it. Intake, UICP, cooling plate (?), coils rewired back to stock (and tested), drained coolant and got most of the wiring harness removed on the top/side of the motor/trans; just enough to get the head off.
http://i.imgur.com/i36PB.jpg I was considering buying a prebuilt block as Mike@AwdMotorsport claims they have them in-stock and ready to go (built by buschur) but of course that was a lie (dispite the fact that he bumped the thread THIS MORNING)--all they have is a $6000 sleeved block by darton. Overkill to say the least :P http://forums.evolutionm.net/evox-sa...cks-stock.html http://forums.evolutionm.net/evox-sa...has-offer.html Sigh, looks like this is getting built locally. I have faith in lots of locals and shops so this is probably best; I was just looking for a quicker fix. |
Re: beaterX project thread
Got a whole hour and a half in on it tonight, dinner with in-laws again, sigh. Spending all night with them again tomorrow I think but still on schedule to get the head off Thursday.
Did the knuckle-busting work tonight; fuel rail/lines, intake manifold, passenger motor mount, acc belt and all the pulleys, except for the damn crank pulley; my impact doesn't seem to be strong enough to break it loose :( That's gonna put a huge damper on things! http://i.imgur.com/jBhld.jpg Talking to lots of vendors to try and get a grasp on what to do for the engine (re)build. AMS could do it quick but I-beam rods are on backorder. Blocks are on national backorder from Mitsubishi. Unconfirmed, but GSC S2 cams are on backorder too. Valvesprings not ready to ship till last week in November. FML. I took insurance off the car today, it's gonna be down for at least a month at this rate :( In the back of my mind I was soooorta hoping I could have bought a shortblock outright from a national engine builder and have this thing back on the road next week, but that dream died today. Sigh. |
Re: beaterX project thread
Suck.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
^ +1
Bummer |
Re: beaterX project thread
Your impact gun might suck, but your starter motor doesn't. Put the your breaker bar on the crank pulley, make sure it won't hit anything weak, then bump the starter. Enough of this uncreativeness!
Son. |
Re: beaterX project thread
Lol the wiring harness is already all unhooked otherwise I would have done that :). I'll prolly try and hook a few things back up and give that a try. Ugh lots of things I guess.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
I bet SBR makes a bitchin' engine ;)
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Nice progress! Keep it moving...next week would've been insane progress. Let us know if you need help though.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Just take it one step at a time scheides. Rent a car for now with the money you are saving on putting cheaper insurance on the car while its down. Take your time with the build, you dont want to rush anything either.
As far as the crank pulley, use a longer breaker bar. Impacts usually dont budge them unless you have a really strong one. |
Re: beaterX project thread
With GSC cams on back-order and springs not available for at least a month why no go the Kelford route for cams/springs? I haven't been following X cams real closely, but I know Cobb favors the Kelford stuff on the X over others.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
Kelfords would be my second choice, but the GSC s2's are pretty sweet.

Re: beaterX project thread
we can use my impact gun
|
Re: beaterX project thread
crappy man. I'm pretty amazed that alot of the stuff you need is backordered. Hopefully it goes smoothly for you man. Guess there will be lots of time and energy spent in your garage this winter. good luck man.

Re: beaterX project thread
keep at it, keep an eye out for some baller that paid for a motor but can't afford it or something?

Re: beaterX project thread
Its probably the PSI, it really needs to be up there to be able to take a crank pulley off.
In gear and on brakes should work, otherwise you will have to hold the engine from rotating some other way. |
Re: beaterX project thread
could be a combination of both, the air compressor you have its on the small size though.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
^This. I'll just try the foot-on-brakes method and a long ass breaker bar, otherwise I'll figure out how to turn the starter over w/o too much hassle.
|
Re: beaterX project thread
You wouldn't HAVE to hook things back up to turn the starter over. You can google bench testing a starter, kinda crude but it might do the trick if you don't want to hook everything back up.
