Re: Project Black ValentNine AKA DSM9.0
Yeah, I was super tired by then, there was a bunch of crap on the track from cleaning up an oil spill right at the turn-in point that was visually distracting, and a few other things like my lack of comfort to be able to save it at 100+mph that contributed. Missed my braking point and tried to hit the racing line anyway instead of easing the car in along the outside. Turned the wheel too hard and too fast while off the throttle at 110 and with no aero on the rear end it just went on me. Almost caught it and decided to let it go since I'd rather spin 90 to the inside than have it snap back to the outside and put the car sideways into the marsh.
Yet another moment I'm not proud of but something I can take a lot away from. I need to listen to myself when it's time to be done, and I need to subscribe to being smooth ALL THE TIME, not just when I'm trying to go fast. I could have turned the wheel the same amount, just at a slower rate, and made the corner while only missing the line by a few feet. |

Re: Project Black ValentNine AKA DSM9.0
Well, epic weekend but not exactly what I started off with in mind. The RS Motors DCTC event was a freaking BLAST, my car was an early 'lead' in the 'speed stop' / autoX after the first session with a 24.9x. I was happy but knew it wouldn't stand up to some of the more setup cars and more experienced drivers later on. nbd :)
Looking back, I ran several 24.9x passes which I'm fairly proud of since I only got two sessions in, but I think I'm the most pumped about my SECOND pass, a 25.0x. First run was 1/2 - 3/4 speed with a 28.x, just lolly gagging to learn the course and then turn up the gas for run number 2. I SUCK at autoX and events like this so this makes me super super excited! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcavSVkJsH4&hd=1 The car felt nice and dialed in on the 'road course' section but maaaan it was SO tight. Definitely a good time to practice patience in the tight corners, nice and easy/smooth. Due to a puking porsche the track had to be reconfigured after the first session and I was happy as hell with the second configuration. Again the car felt awesome, I was feeling confident and just trying all kinds of ways to go through various elements of the course...too hot, too slow, a little sideways, nice and tight, etc etc etc. Learned a lot about the car and it was great experience. I had brought with my neighbor Alex, it was his first time at a track and he was just eating it up; I brought him for a drive-along for part of that second session, and about 3/4 of the way through there was a POP at the top of 2nd gear and I had to pull over. Pics basically tell the rest of the story, but at the track I kept wondering, 'where did the accessory belt go??!?!?' as it was seriously just gone. Towed the car home, easy peasy. Thanks spazzy and Dusty for helping me get it in the garage! http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1615.sized.jpg I knew this day would come :( http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1620.sized.jpg Accessory belt, where are you!?!?!? http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1630.sized.jpg Crank is at TDC and cams are here....yeow. http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1632.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1633.sized.jpg Timing cover is a little um...thrashed. http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/15_3.sized.jpg As I took things apart, I found more and more accessory belt bits, finally this was behind the timing cog: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/15_4.sized.jpg After cleaning everything out, I re--set timing and crossed my fingers with a compression test: 0 0 0 0 :( Turbo was quite the helper, very supportive! http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/15_5.sized.jpg So, off came the head and on went my sad face...look, 5 rocker arms just floating aroudn the head: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/15_6.sized.jpg Cams scored: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/15_7.sized.jpg Ummmmmm yuck. All 16 valves are on full derp-mode: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/15_8.sized.jpg Found this in cyl3: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1671.sized.jpg Cyl1: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1672.sized.jpg Cyl2: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1673.sized.jpg Cyl3: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1674.sized.jpg Cyl4: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1675.sized.jpg Shockingly, all of the cyl walls look good at first look. The worst piston is #3, need some advice on what to do here: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_1678.sized.jpg High res pics here: http://www.scheides.com/gallery/evo9 So, bought some dollies the next day and after some garage antics, pushed the car against the wall so I could pull the s2k back in. http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/15_10.sized.jpg Fun weekend! :D |
Re: Project Black ValentNine AKA DSM9.0
When I dropped a valve in my Talon on 1 cylinder, it was in much worse shape than what your pic shows on cyl 3. I basically just purchased a new piston/rings and rod for that one cylinder. I also replaced all the rod bearings in all cylinders. I borrowed a bottle hone and just did a quick hone with the hand drill on that cylinder. Sprayed the shit out of it with brake cleaner. Got a replacement head. Reassembled, crossed fingers, and it worked out fine. Did it all with the block still in the car. Actually turned out to not cost all that much. Car ran great and actually ran my only 10 in that car like that. That 1 cylinder was always maybe 10psi lower compression wise than the others (So maybe 165 instead of 175), but worked out just fine obviously.

Re: Project Black ValentNine AKA DSM9.0
Curious to what speeds you are seeing at DCTC, "back straight" for my ninja is around 95-102 most of the time, front straight is 70-85; with a bit left on the table in both scenarios. Corner speeds are pretty decent, but I have a long way to go!
