Yes. He's still on the stock turbo.

Yup, that's the plan. He didn't get retuned for that dyno run because we still have an intake manifold and throttle body to put on. We also just wanted to see what the raw gains were. I'm sure once everything is swapped and tuned properly, we'll see some nice gains throughout the power band. :)

Why would the A/F have changed at all though with such a minor exhaust side change. Was it a lot different?

Why the change? I don't know, but my car got quite a bit richer after the o2 elim dp install so for whatever reason higher flowing exhaust path = rich on my car.

November tune vs. ported manifold run (for some reason the dyno database won't show my AFR from the pre-manifold baseline, but at the time we compared it vs. the November tune and it was nearly identical):

Ported IM/TB install tonight and retune tomorrow!

Armando is coming over after work and we're going to stay at it until the job is done :D

Ported stock manifolds did nothing but help spool on the 8/9. My guess is the higher flowing exhaust is playing differently on the X since it has exhaust MIVEC (which only the X has), with minor changes to that I expect to get my spool back.

I fully agree. Already just in the back-to-back untuned comparison you can see gains of +9whp in some areas above 5,500 RPM which is a really good sign.

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Insanely impressive for a stock head! Already very smooth and wide open, barely even a need for any porting, if anything I'd say it only "needs" a tiny bit of smoothing/cleanup.

http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ium/photo4.JPG

We got the Mil.Spec IM/TB set along with MAP phenolic gasket installed tonight. Took us about 5 hours start to finish which included a pizza/Throwback Dew break and time to R&R the stock undertray. The manifold itself wasn't really a problem nor were the support brackets...it was all the damn wiring harness clips and the TB coolant line clamps which were at a very precarious angle. The coolant lines to the TB could easily be bypassed with a 180* bent hose to loop to/from the thermostat housing. We decided to skip this for now since we didn't have a hose like that, didn't want to kink a factory line, and were excited to just get the car back together! I had no idea just how much material Aby @ Mil.Spec actually removed from the IM runners until I had it side-by-side with the stocker! I reset the ECU and overall the car seems to be idling just fine; a tad high right after startup but the ECU quickly corrects and brings it down (this may just be because I reset the ECU, I'll find out tomorrow once I actually drive it a bit).

My tune is scheduled for noon tomorrow so later on in the afternoon I'll be reporting back with some final numbers :D

I have a new found HATE for that stupid little vac line clamps. Damn them all to hell!

Aside from that, can't wait to see the results of all our labor over the past few weeks! I'm excited to see the final results!

I lost a fair bit of blood on the fuel return line ones. I bought a couple pairs of needle nose at different angles and life is more pleasant now.

After the car got a chance to learn the new TB it idles just as smooth and perfectly as stock! So far I'm very impressed with these Mil.Spec products.

Not as far as I know, I think Evos only.

I tried to look for a site but didn't find anything.
Results?

Kracka 03-19-2011 03:07 PM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

I don't believe they have a website. Aby @ Mil.Spec, the guy who does the porting, is an airflow engineer who's done work for professional race teams (NASCAR, CART, IRL, etc.).

Sadly though, no results for today :( A Mazdaspeed3 came in from Louisianna for a 10am appointment and it was all sorts of booty. As of 3pm they're still working on it and trying to get it to run right. Gatorade bottle caps used to plug stuff, none of the clamps were tightened down, something wrong with the wastegate, etc. Since Andrew and Emily will be here soon I decided to just head home and reschedule for Tuesday afternoon.

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Dun dun dun indeed! LOL

First I'll start with the twist: I'm out of fuel pump! This isn't supposed to happen on a pump gas stock turbo X, I must really be flowing some air ;) My tuner says the car definitely has more in it so once the new pump is installed the tune will be further tweaked.

Prior tune = 342whp/360wtq
Baseline = 345whp/359wtq
+ PPI extreme ported exhaust manifold
+ Mil.Spec ported IM
+ Mil.Spec ported TB
+ MAP phenolic IM gasket
New tune = 360whp/378wtq

That's +18whp/+18wtq from my previous tune plus gains, including quicker spool, throughout the entire powerband! Damn impressive for stock turbo/pump gas on a Mustang Dyno especially considering the car has more in it yet. For comparison sake, my IX (w/cams, etc.) put down 360whp/369wtq on this dyno.

I am beyond excited to get a new fuel pump in the car and get back for more tuning!

Impressive Kracka,

That is some awesome power gains, what are the predictions with a new pump? How much is left on the table?

Kracka 03-23-2011 08:24 PM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Tough to say, but even if they're minimal and only add a bit extra margin for safety I'll be very happy. If I hit 380wtq I'll be thrilled, but that may or may not happen since it's not down low where the car is out of fuel. I'd say probably at least a few more whp but we'll shall see...today exceeded my expectations, we'll see what happens next time :)

Nice! You just made a FQ-360 on stock turbo. Could never understand why Ralliart UK needed to swap turbos on any of the FQ series ( VIII, IX, X) to get those numbers you just achieved.

Good stuff man! Those are some great gains. Do you think the elevation change between MN and TX made a difference?

Kracka 03-23-2011 09:36 PM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Doubt it, the difference is what, maybe 500 feet or less?

Kracka 03-24-2011 07:59 AM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Shitty cell phone pic of my chart, but it will have to do until Cobb gets their online database updated.

http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...tune_chart.JPG

full size image here: http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/da...tune_chart.JPG

I know it's tough to read, but you can get the general idea of the gains, slightly quicker spool, and relatively close boost curve. The curves will be further smoothed once the new fuel pump is in, but there was no point finalizing the tune last night when it's all just going to need adjusting.

Looking good! whens the turbo coming?

Kracka 03-24-2011 08:13 AM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

With these kind of results seen on the stock turbo it will be a long time, if ever :) I want to make sure the car stays nice and reliable for DD street use and hopefully retain the stock clutch for a while yet.

With a new fuel pump though I'll only be injectors away from being able to support something larger.

Do you still have stock injectors? Based on my car, it was never too obvious which was the problem.
