Re: Make slowboy not so slow
I agree, I expected something like 170s for compression.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow
No offense, but i think your engine is no better than the turbo.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Some food for thought, another thing you could try is to hook up the boost leak tester to the TB Elbow. See if it still leaks out of the VC/dipstick. If it does, then you know it's not the turbo. If it doesn't, good chance it is. Just help verify that it is in fact the turbo.
I also agree those compression numbers are a bit low, but I've definitely seen worse. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
At least they're pretty even.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Guys, don't forget that compression numbers depend on the tester equipment used. I don't use my compression tester super often, perhaps it reads 10psi low from some other one. 160 would be a much better number, and it is common for them to vary from gauge to gauge. The fact that they are all fairly consistent, that is what is important.
The turbo is definitely shot, the compressor and turbine wheels are chewed up, and there has to be air seeping past the bearings. What's this red you got andrew, a new one or another pos used one? ;) |

Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Yea its good they are even, and gauges could be inaccurate, but considering stock 2G's typically have around 180 compression, and his motor should at that or even more since its 9:1 compression. Maybe 2.3L is making the difference? I dont know. My old 1g with 7.8:1 compression had about 150 across the board, so it just seems like his is quite low. Lots of boost will have to make up for it I guess.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow
I'm already up to like 6k on the motor, damn trips to Iowa. Anyway, I'll check with my compression tester as well, also when I get a good starter. That way I can compare to my previous results with my stock motor.
And Brandon, yes I thought of the same thing, when I have the turbo off i'll hook up the boost tester to the lower IC pipe and go from there. EDIT: won't a compression test show lower numbers with big cams? |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
No, the valves fully open and close no matter what cams you have :)
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Well I thought since it was super low rpm range it would make less compression than a stock cam, but I'm just a noob.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Also, Correct me if I'm wrong, but compression ratio doesn't have much of an effect on compression psi. Higher compression pistons don't really pull any more or less air than stock pistons
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
No im pretty sure the higher compression pistons you have, the more pressure there is in the cylinders. Thats why 2gs register much higher than 1gs.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow
ok, I just wasnt sure, I know it compresses the air to a smaller space, but there's actually less volume for the air to fill at BDC, so I thought maybe they would cancel eachother out.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow
I finally got my starter replaced, works like a charm now, thanks Mark for the JDM starter!
I have also been running e85 for a couple weeks now, and the mileage is better than I expected. I'm getting around 18 in town and 21 on the highway. On my trip to Iowa this weekend I averaged a little under 20mpg, and that's with a little town driving, idling for an hour, and hauling a longblock as well (which I definitely noticed, a lot less vacuum than usual on the highway). It costs $2.85 everywhere in Iowa that I've seen, downtown Minneapolis it's like $3.25, I need to find a cheaper local station that sells it. Since I have a 16 gallon tank, I can easily go mid 200s on a tank. I hear most people have to add like 35% more fuel or so, but I had to add almost 45% to get the fuel trims back to zero. The mileage isn't that bad so I can't complain too much, just wondering why this may be? |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
I need to get on that e85 bus. Sounds awesome.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Oh yea, and that longblock messed up the tint on my hatch glass, scraped off about a quarter size area in one spot and a few other scratches too, I was sort of pissed.
Anyone have an engine hoist I could use for about 2 weeks? I need to get the long block out of my car and into the black GSX in Pete's garage so I can sell the bitch. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Mine is at my buddies in Maple Grove. If he's done with it, you could go pick it up from his place. Pete lives in MG too right?

Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Perfect, is that Derek? Can you pm me his #?
