Basically, I need a new tranny for my car. What are my options? It's a 92 awd 5 spd 6 bolt

Will a 2G awd tranny work? do I need a 2g xfer case then? shifter cables?

a 1g 1990 tranny(prolly need xfer and shifter cables then...)?

a "JDM" switchable tranny/xfer case? (there is one for sale right now).

I'm gonna call local places to see if they have any 1g AWD trannys. yeah, right...

So I guess my diagnosis was correct?

Honestly, I'm just getting ready to pull the tranny right now. I'm just assuming the worst, and the crack in the case alone doesnt not seem fixable.

John has 2 awd 5speed 1g trannies. The first one needs a VCU and has a welded center diff. The 2nd one he got from a friend when he worked at Wayzata Mitsubishi. He was told it needs a "rebuild". The 1st one needs a rebuild as well I would imagine.
Its a start, as I believe no hard parts are broken.
Make him an offer.
I am unsure if these are 90 or 91-94 trans.
The 90's require shifter cable modifications, and the t-case switch. Switching out the shifter is also a good idea/required.
Your best bet is to get a US market 91-94 awd transmission.

You don't need a different shifter. I think all you need to do is take a bracket for the linkage off the old tranny and swap it along with the t-case. If you found a 90 tranny, make sure to get the t-case and make sure all parts are on the tranny. You will need to swap some of them.

I wouldn't bother with the 2g tranny swap. You could get 700-800 for a used 2g awd tranny if it is in good shape. Used 1g ones go for 300-400 generally.

Ah the bracket, that is what I was thinking of.
It has been awhile since I've played the 90 tranny in a 91+ game or a 91+ tranny in a 90 game.

Ok, well thanks. That is a start. So no to the switchable tranny?

No switchable tranny unless you're not going to make any power. The switchable has the same internals as a 90 tranny, some of which get swapped out if you have Shep rebuild it. It's cheapest to get a 91-94 core and ship it out to him.

what does it mean when you say "switchable"?

Switchable between 2wd and 4wd.
