My friend just bought a '91 GSX for 200$ because the tranny won't shift. It will shift from park to reverse to neutral to drive just fine. But once in drive, it seems to be stuck in like 3rd gear. It bogs off the start really bad and then once it gets up to speed it will just hover around 3k to 3500 rpm. Any ideas? i was thinking maybe it was the Transmission Control Unit. but thats kind of a random guess since I know absolutely nothing about automatic transmissions.
Thanks
Anthony
A lot of auto trannies have a "limp" mode that it will go in if there is a problem. I am not positive if a 91 GSX has that but you could start by reseting the TCU.

Send the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) in to be rebuilt. It's a common problem with 1g's. It's behind the center console all the way up against the firewall where the floor meets the firewall. Terina had the same problem with hers. She sent it to a place in Austin, MN. I think it cost $175 with a warranty. Took almost no time at all to get it done.
And if that don't fix it, I have an AWD auto tranny out of a 92-93 Talon that I'll sell you. Worked when it came out of the car. Just missing a side cover that you could take off of the old tranny. I can't remember if the spline counts are different or not.
BTW, whereabouts in St. Cloud are you from? I graduated from Tech High many moons ago. Grew up up there.

A place in Austin huh? I'm from Austin. I live in the dorms up here in St. Cloud. Going to school here to become a pilot. Could you possibly find out what that place is called in Austin since that is where the car is located? Thanks for the help.
