Any suggestions where to look locally? I'm not looking for a super computer, just something that will run basic programs and surf around the internet. Right now all I see is the Dell stuff. Seems like for around $600 I can get a decent machine with a 17" flat screen monitor and a printer. Opinions?

We've had our last 4 as Dells. I just make sure the Hard Drive and Memory is up to par and from there it's all gravy.

What machine did you buy last? You happy with it?

Go to Ebay - you'll get a good P3 laptop or a P 4 desktop for 300-350 bux

Oh yeah, love it
Dell Dimension 4700
Pent 4 2.80GHz
256mb ram
Running XP
17" flat screen
DVD/CD Burner

It's not a $600 setup, but it's definatly what I wanted.

I think this time around I'm gonna buy new. All my other computers have been $100-200 jobbies. I've kinda had a couple of almost bad experiences with Ebay lately.

You can check MicroCenter in St. Louis Park too, its a pretty large computer warehouse type store with a lot of decent computers for low(er)-end prices. Watch the Sunday ads too, generally there are some good deals to be found after mail-in-rebates. My parents have a Dell and overall they are very happy with it. I personally built my own computer but never again, its just too much hassle for what I actually use it for.

There are two for $679 with P4 2.8gh and 3.0gh processors, 256 & 512 RAM, 80g HD's and 17" flat screens. Opinions?

The hard drive in my Dell(purchased new in August of 2002) informed me the other day that it is junk. A good friend of mine works in the Geek Squad at Best Buy also informed me that that's one of the most common issues with Dells. Personally I'd build one or have someone build one for you.
