92 talon TSI awd 6/4 5 speed

My buddies talon's tranny is very weird. When he bought the car, it was pretty grindy going into 2nd. He figured out how to shift without making it grind for daily driving

When power shifting / slamming 2nd, it would never hesitate to go in and it would make no sounds.

Then it started popping out of gear occassionally and stoped grinding while going into gear at any point

Now it will not go into 2nd gear ( every once in awhile he can jam it in, and it wont pop out on its own) and 3rd gear has become very very notchy.

I dont know much about the basic opperation of how the manual transmission works, but I do gather that these problems are very strange and usually, once a tranny grinds, it always grinds unless repairs are done, or the correct gear lube is applied. I have no idea what sort of gear lube is in there but we just bought Royal purple 75w/90 gear oil. The real question is, should we bother putting the expensive gear lube in to see if it helps? Or should we just shaft it until we install nashs old tranny sometime within the next month?

Thanks again guys!

If the synchros are worn out putting good fluid in might help a tad bit, but your just delaying the inevitable. Time for a rebuild or a new/different tranny.

Dont waste the money of putting really nice synthetic gear lube in if the gear already pops out or wont stay in. If its that far gone then just drive it till it wont go in at all and then swap trannys, then put the nice royal purple in. That stuff is hella expensive isnt it?
