I'm a little confused on this subject. Can someone shine some light on why people change over to the GM MAF and the MAFT. What's the purpose, what are the benefits, when should I consider changing over, and what are the parts needed to convert?

Increased air flow, better spool up, compensate for bigger injectors, lets you blow off BOV to atmosphere with no ill effects. Can be used for tuning on its own, works pretty good in conjunction with a SAFC. Also allows you to ditch the stock intake pipe and mass air flow sensor. Probably some shit I am missing but them are the big plus sides it has.

Yeah, I know the basics of the MAFT and the blow-through setup, but some people say that you should get a logger or DSMlink before you install the MAFT, is this right?

Well a logger for sure so you know how your fuel trims are, if your rich or lean. DSMlink/AFC are to compensate for the airflow differences. The translator can compensate a little but its much easier and more precise with the AFC or DSMlink, perferably DSMlink.
